Favourite Christmas Song...

I know I'm butting in, but you chaps take some effort to keep up with - Phew !! - I envy your energetic enthusiasm. What a long Topic ... It will always be with us ... I would like to add my humble opinion (not about the individual lot numbers) For approx. 20 years I have been collecting a finely produced subject (irrelevant to this site), sold under a family name. I have been a Society member for that product for several years and learnt as much as I could about the production and trained my eyes to the finer details on each piece (as you do with coins). On e-Bay this product is listed under it's own name - BUT - I get infurated by pages ... and pages ... of 'SIMILAR TO/ LOOKALIKE/SAME AS, completely different names - C R A P - Grrrrr...... I really do see your point regarding coins on e-Bay, but please take a step back (if only for a couple of minutes !!). Most of you are experts or very experienced in coins, but don't forget e-Bay is for the general public. Although you genuine chaps don't want to see other people 'ripped off' or 'done' yourselves, a lot of the general public ARE gullible. Even I (a complete beginner on coins) can see through a lot of the items listed. Certainly if I see L@@K or R@RE, I don't give it another glance, but advertising in general DOES 'draw' some buyers - it is THEY who have to learn not to be 'taken in'. I agree some sort of classification should be introduced on e-Bay, but in such a complex field, I'll leave that to the experts to figure out how ?? My point here (yes, I know you are waiting for it !!) is that the problem does exist on e-Bay in every collectable subject. No matter what changes you 'good guys' could possibly make on e-Bay regarding coins, there will always be a gullible buyer and, rest assured, always a seller who doesn't give a ---- !! I am learning from you chaps, but very slowly !!

Especially for Younger Members ?
tubandpud posted a topic in Nothing whatsoever to do with coins area!
Following on from School Subjects - I hated school, except for the last year! - No sophisticated lessons in those days, basically R+R+R. My favourite lesson in the last year (1958 - ouch !!) was Pitmans shorthand (younger members refer to dictionary) and bookkeeping (£.s.d. then) with no adding machines worked with handles - calculators came much later ! A quiz for all, but please, older members have fun then reply at a later date:- In 1954 I went into a grocery shop with one £1. note and one 10 shilling note. I bought meat @ 7s.9,1/2d ; bread @ 1s.2,3/4d ; dairy products @ 3s.6,1/2d ; fresh fruit @ 2s.8d ; vegetables @ 3s.3,1/4d ; biscuits @ 11d ; dried fruit @ 2/- and cleaning products @ 2s.1,1/4d. I was given the largest possible coins in my change, which were they ? Have fun - NO CALCULATORS !! -

All right, you lot, take the piss out of me (or Sylvester) I'm broad enough to take it !! Sorry, Sylvester - it was your 'beautiful' hair which threw me. I've still got a lot to learn about you members ?? -

Thanks for replies. Yes, Sylvester came up with the correct amount of change, but I'm glad I wasn't behind her in the shop converting to pennies !! Master Jmd had the right idea about the coins, but sorry mate, added up incorrectly. Peter's Grandad was VERY lucky to receive a crown in his change - not normal in 1954, as noted by Sylvester. Joeys (silver 3d.) were not usual in change by then either. What I ended up with in my change was:- Half-crown 2s. 6d. Florin/Two Shillings (2 bob-bit) 2s. 0d. Shilling (bob) 1s. 0d. Sixpence (tanner) 6d. Brass Threepence (thr'up'ny) 3d. Two pennies (coppers) 2d. (not my two penny cartwheel) Half-penny ('a'pny) 1/2d. Farthing 1/4d. (not my 1694 W&M) TOTAL - 6s. 5,3/4d. (Violin time !!) The younger generation have it soooooooeasy with decimals and Euros !! ?? By the way, I was far too young to go to The Dog & Partridge in 1954 !! -

tubandpud replied to tubandpud's topic in British Coin Related Discussions & Enquiries
Thanks Geoff -
This 'coin' is 1/14 inches (30mm) dia. Dark metal (copper ?), Quite ornate. Rev. Outer band 1837-97 TO COMMEMORATE THE 60th YEAR OF HER MAJESTYS REIGN. Inner has branches/flowers/leaves at the bottom, three fanned shields above them, crown (with sun rays) above them, then THE DIAMOND JUBILEE above that. Obv. has 1897 at bottom - outer band has FOUR GENERATIONS OF THE (crown with sun rays) (at top) BRITISH ROYAL FAMILY. Across the middle (main part) are four heads. Geo. VI as a boy, Geo. V, Edward VII and Victoria veiled bust. Under Victoria's head is printed COPYRIGHT !! Any ideas what to call this ? Thanks.

Thanks, Geoff -
Another one I don't know about. This one is silver, 1 inch (20mm) dia. Rev. has a young Victoria head. Quite a few leaves/flowers at the bottom. No outer band at all. Beneath the branches - 1837. Left of the head Right of the head LONGI- TVDO ET DI DIERVM SINISTRA IN DEXTRA GLORIA EIVS Obv. has Victoria veiled bust. Round the edge (no band) VICTORIA ANNVM REGNI SEXAGESIMVM FELICITER CLAVDIT XX IVN.MDCCCXCVII. What do I call this one ? - Is is worth anything ? Thanks

Coin, or What ?
tubandpud replied to tubandpud's topic in British Coin Related Discussions & Enquiries
Thanks, Geoff T. -
I was hoping to post images, but didn't succeed. Pictures are on my computer, but I don't know yet how to transfer them to the forum. This 'coin' I have is only 1/2 inch (12mm) diameter. Silver colour, thin metal, magnetic. Rev. is dated 1887 - has four shields, same as the 1887 florin. Although enlarged photo, I can't read lettering. Obv. has Victoria Jubilee bust. the word NURNBERG visible on right side. Lettering on the left not so clear - possibly L:CBF.LAUEH. I have asked under British coins because of Victoria's head. Thanks.

2005 Crowns
tubandpud replied to aleroit2000's topic in British Coin Related Discussions & Enquiries
I spoke to R.M. yesterday. They aren't doing seperate Trafalgar £5. coins yet !! Whoops, sorry to mention Westminster (I don't know yet what wrong worm is in the can !!), but 'W' said they would probably be selling the 'Nelson' £5 coin later on - Watch this space! -
Hello Geoff T, I haven't been handed a 2004 - 20p yet, but have the Roger Bannister 50p, along with several previous 50p's and £2's, also Crowns/£5's. I'm collecting these coins for our future history !!, though they don't seem to have any feeling to them like the old coins.

Hi Sylvester, Thanks - the 1999 £1 does look genuine. The last word is LACESSIT Yes, I do have a 1988 £1. - that has DECUS ET TUTAMEN - looks O.K. to me ! (with single shield) I have put the fake 1977 £1 away from my collection now !! Thanks for your help.

Who wants to be a Sales Rep?
tubandpud replied to Chris Perkins's topic in British Coin Related Discussions & Enquiries
When I receive my copy Chris (just ordered), I will take it as far as I can to show others in neighbouring towns - my town isn't too good for small bookshops and definitely NO proper coin shops !! -
2005 Crowns
tubandpud replied to aleroit2000's topic in British Coin Related Discussions & Enquiries
Hi aleroit2000, I'm new to collecting and ordered a Trafalgar £5 through Wetminster Collection Ltd, only single coin for £5. THEN I discovered the Nelson to the 'pair'. I have seen these for sale as a pair in information folder for £18.50 + £1.50 p/p. I'm still looking to buy the Nelson coin on it's own for £5. Would be interested if you find one before me ?? -
Thanks for Decimal list Sylvester. I have learnt my first lesson from the experts - LOOK VERY CAREFULLY AT ALL COINS, even if you aren't sure what you are looking for !! I can see what you mean about the fake £1. It has the Northern Irish design on it. None of it is very 'sharp', worn around the edge as well, and the + sign is incorrect. I note from your list, you don't mention a £1 = 1999. Yes, I have one (please don't tell me that is a fake as well ??) It has the Scottish lion design with fourth portrait, as per Spink 4591 (Not SPONK from the past !) I did spend my pension money on one of those last week and following your list, I am now starting to understand it. NOW you have me wondering, what are the chances of this being from a presentation folder ? - I think I probably know the answer to that one !!! SCARY OR WHAT ??? In only two months collecting.
-
Thanks for that (I think !!) That is enough to get the old grey matter moving around !! - Yes, I am going to get a CCGB (Waiting for W.H.Smith to get one for me ???!!). I will order one from you shortly. Also, yes, I am still finding my way around your website and have now found 'British Coin Key Dates' I am still new on the computer as well - Oh dear, it all takes longer when we are OLDIES !

Hello again, Thanks for the welcome from all of your replies (I didn't expect so many). I feel like I know some of you already from 'looking in' on your forum over the last three weeks, since I found you. I am concentrating on pre-decimal from 192l (although I have a few older coins). Also collecting decimal. Can anyone tell me why I am having difficulty finding a few "odds". I understand the 2p's from reading 'The Two Pence Rumour exposed'. Is there a reason for not finding 1972 1p, 1993 5p, 1993/94/98/99 10p, 1986 20p, 1998 £l. I have found two different reverses 1997 £l's, other than I am not looking hard enough ?? O.K. - I AM ONLY A BEGINNER !! Where can I find this sort of information, Also for the years pre-decimal coins were scarce or not minted at all ? I take the point about E-Bay - Everything advertised there is costly and SCARCE (Ha, Ha !!)
