Bought this a couple of weeks ago, Trebonianus Gallus AR Antoninianus. Gaius Vibius Trebonianus Gallus (251-253 A.D.) Short join rule with Hostilian who died from the plague. Gallus then ruled with his son Volusianus as co-emperor. Both killed by their troops. Obverse: IMP C C VIB TREB GALLVS P F AVG, radiate, draped & cuirassed bust right Reverse: SAECVLLVM NOVVM, Roma seated facing in hexstyle temple, two dots in ex. Antoninus Pius Birthday Cake! One of my latest buys, not quite as good as the mooning one. Its actually a coin issued by Marcus Auralius in honour of Pius and shows his funeral pyre. Divus Antoninus Pius Denarius. Issued by Marcus Aurelius, 161 AD. DIVVS ANTONINVS, bare head right / CONSECRATIO, four tiered funeral pyre surmounted by quadriga.

Hi James, Yes, books, books and more books! When I first started with ancient coins I bought as many coins as I could, never too expensive, but just to quite literally get a feel! There really is no substitute for a coin in the hand. From a picture you very quickly loose touch with the size, weight, thickness, colour and general "feel" of a coin. After an initial frenzy, I was left with a load of coins that I had no real idea about! Next came the books. I thought I spent too much on coins until I started to buy books! But if I could pass on some advice I was given, buy the book first! If you are new to Ancients, Chris has a fantastic book on Roman bronze coins for under £6. There is also a silver one planned, and I'm sure due this year. If you are still interested, there are loads of other books, but its worth looking around, getting an idea of what you are interested in, specialise if you can, then buy the books best suited to your interest. A good place to start is your local library, see what they have. They can often order books from central libraries for you to look at too. Most of all, enjoy! Dave

Sorry, I should have added that value is very subjective, and that just because it looks ok to me, doesn't make it real! If you can, have a good look at the coin, especially the edge, and if you have any doubts - don't buy it! One other word of caution - once you start, you won't stop!

Hi snailx, The coins is: Cn Porcius Cato Denarius. 123 BC. Helmeted head of Roma right, X behind / Victory in biga right holding reins and whip; C CATO below, ROMA in ex. Syd 417, Cr274/1 Value is difficult, £20-40 ish? Looks real to me. Dave

Just how many coins do you all have, and how do you store and display them? I'm guessing that some of the modern (to me the last 200 years is VERY modern!) collections must run into hundreds of coins? Dave

If anyone is stuck for something to do during half term, and just happen to be near Manchester, can I recommend the Museum? It has a great coin department, with a permanent exhibition there. Museum of Manchester Coins If you are lucky, the keeper of coins Mr Keith Sugden will be there and have time to talk you through the displays or show you some of the fantastic coins they have. He is a great chap, very knowledgeable and friendly. Well worth a visit, a little way out of Manchester, in the University, but opposite a NCP car park. Dave

Hi Smudge, I'm sorry, but my eyes are not as good as they were! Can you either spell out the obverse & reverse inscriptions, or post a bigger picture (if Chris will allow!) Approximate diameter would be useful too. Dave

The coin is encapsulated in plastic, usually after an "expert" has decided what the coin is, and includes the coins attribution. I'm sure it has its place, but I'm not sure what that place is. I'd rather have the coin than a slab of plastic!

"Coin News" a monthly magazine have a section "Fair Diary". I'm sure it's not all the fairs everywhere, but at least its a few. You can get a free trial copy of the mag here: www.tokenpublishing.com
