    Ebay's Worst Offerings

A bit of shill bidding going on here anyone? Possibly, but he's going to have to relist it because i won it. Just waiting on him emailing me for payment then i'll let him know (he already does) that its pewter, but wondering if HE will tell me this first as a good ebay seller _______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Could'nt wait, so i've emailed him Hello, been waiting for you to contact me about this coin. Was actually wanting to see if you were an honest seller or not, and it seems not. Reason being is that i know you had several emails during this auction telling you that this coin was made of pewter, yet you've failed to tell me this so far and you also failed to update your auction stating this, and that can only be for one reason, you wanted it sold as original. There is a very good British coin forum which i'm a member of and your coin was pointed out on that forum, your wording in the auction does'nt really wash either as you've sold coins and sell a few coins and you certainly knew the date, but your WHAT IS IT quote was really quite amusing. So, what we can do is either you sell it as a pewter fake (as you know it is) and i can forget feedback, or you can try again selling as the real deal and i can leave a nice feedback. P.s the forum name is predecimal.com/forum look under free for all then under ebay laughs. Can't wait to hear how this pans out Dave, do keep us posted! I admire your vigilante style! Dave is a Scot as was my motherinlaw She sent me to Coventry as I wasn't good enough for her daughter....still banged her. just the daughter and the current Mrs Peter

    Underweight 1903 halfpenny

Are we talking pennies here? The 1876H is commonly the narrow date variety, whereas the wide date is quite rare. Hi, Yes (silly me), we are talking pennies. I thought it was the other way round from referencing "Collector's Coins", but thanks for the update - I am happily corrected. So the one I had originally was the rarer one. Bitten on the bum again! The wide date is G to F and the narrow date was at least F so a slight diminution of overall worth. The ebay purchase was still a bargain but less so than before. Thanks again, Garry CCGB is a fantastic value little book, with lots more packed in than many more expensive guides. However, a few of the prices have to be taken with a pinch of salt - I think Chris Perkins (who publishes it) meant to show 'wide date' as the 1876H variety, not 'narrow date'. Another incongruity is the 1886 farthing - in reality it's as common as the 1884 and 1885, but CCGB shows it 4 - 5 times the value from VF to BU. If in doubt, compare against Spink, but always keep in mind that all price guides are only that - a guide, not a bible. Well said I think we all know rare coins as Spink seems to miss them.
  3. I have an example ....that is the way I collect. It won't serve you any premium.I paid about £15 for a VF example...it is lurking on the sell side.
  4. A lot of coins left the mint looking worn in the 17/18C....indeed hammered too...try getting hold of a decent 1698 farthing...any type The reverse is nicely struck and the silver looks good....I would snap it up at 40x face.

Haha. Grossly overrated year, common as muck! Everyone apparently kept them at the time as it was the last year, and BU multiples were offered in the late 60s. Not sure Britannia was ever a goddess, even in her Roman incarnation. Never under estimate the humble farthing....I do prefer pre 1936 what other coin could you get 960 for £1. I love them
  6. As Peck has said coins in bags is not correct.Picture some of the nicer older coins. I relieved myself of a small suitcase of predecimal coins for £18 last summer. The silver dollar will be worth its weight in silver as will any pre 47 or pre 20 UK silver coins (50% & 92.5% silver).Look at the main predecimal site for key dates and look at the coins for sale to get an idea on grading.

You are welcome to to the forum. The coins blackend were mainly farthings so they could not be passed off as sovereigns. You can buy BU halfpennies. One of the dates to look for are 1918 farthings produced in BU and darkened. Feel free to ask questions....we are a friendly lot but with bank holidays and extra stress...I'm heading for my pills

I have emailed him twice. The first time telling him it was a pewter replica. The 2nd time asking him why he hadn't added this to the listing. Reported to ebay who do diddly.

A nice coin...but VF at best.
  13. I have a few...nothing near the quality of those beauties. Nice one's Hus.
  14. Peter

    Which do you prefer

Both are bullion value so go with what you like the look of.I sold my sovereigns and kept the guinea's.(I kept 1 sovereign)
  15. It's an "erb".mannnn. If you like Oriental/Asian food you've had some.
  16. Sure. If only CGS slabbed hammered coins you could have it population listed too! Oh, the prestige of it, just imagine those immortal words..."finest known 1/1" Finest known...yep I've seen that misleading quote. Considering 99% of UK collectors don't slab their coins. It is like saying Newport County undefeated....they haven't played Man City yet....or even Orient. I've chuckled with a dealer at the midland "the quote finest known" was being bandied about...he said " I have 2 better ones in my tray"

    Ebay's Worst Offerings

I've bought a few good bargains from this seller (probably from errors like this one), until I had a disagreement about postage! I bought two coins separately, about £20-30 each (Recorded postage charge on each)and, when I came to pay...Special Delivery charges for combining! I said, then please post them separately at Recorded Delivery, that would be much cheaper for me! I couldn't make them understand that I should BENEFIT from buying lots of coins from them, not be penalised, grrrrr! They did get sent SD, I didn't pay SD though! A shame for them, because a fair number of their coins would have burnt and died in the past, but for my enthusiasms (?spelling)! That's what you have to remember when you upset an ebay buyer, they could be making you money, even when they lose! I've used that seller.Never had a problem. If you didn't pay SD why get upset?
  18. Today is my wife's birthday :)Tonight we will be frequenting a local restaurant and then spending the weekend in North Norfolk.I will catch the dinner for Saturday night. We have plans to retire up there in a cottage with me having a small boat and a couple of crab pots. I fish off the beach and have a great shrimp net.If I can only find a local seller with scrumpy.I have booked lunch for Sunday....just in case and we will be taking a stock of our village butchers sausages. A coin free weekend.
  19. It is a bit like the 1988 £ coin.I plucked about 20 out of circulation. Then I bought a 1988 year set and another UNC one so I spent the circulated ones.
  20. Quite frankly I don't remember. However this year I made mad passionate love all day and then went home to Mrs Peter
  21. I was after a BU 1958 6d for a long time....got mine for £2. There are some strange pricing lists of coins. As always know your subject. I do love a bargain but will always push my price for nicer examples.
  22. All the 1946 & 49's were plucked out of circulation in the 60's I was given loads by my grandfathers.EF+ are rare though.
  23. Collecting coins is a wide subject. My mother reads Mills and boon. Father read Dennis Wheatly. I read fact (apart from Douglas Adams) Our weekly trip to the library (sweetshop afterwards)then the fish mongers (bloaters, kippers, sprats, herring, cod roe)was a Saturday routine. I used to cook the fish. My daughters friends are unwary of anything that doesn't come in breadcrumbs and a birds eye packet. This weekend I will forage on the shore for tea. Some hot bread, seafood, salad followed by a Monte Christo and a walk on the beach does me fine.
  24. BTW Pubs are cheap for food and ale and the locals spot on.We have many friends up there.I gave some eels to a local crab fisher who met me in the pub later with hot crab sandwiches.Love it
