  1. A lot of W3 copper varieties are only available in crap. Even after Baldwin's basement was emptied, most remain unobtainable in better than VF with quite a lot fine or a bit better at best. Fine as in fine or fine for the series.Any currency between 1672 and 1701(1/2d) are so difficult. You can get a nice William and Mary bust coin when the date is not obvious.
  2. Well if you will go around carrying horses on your back Let alone punching them.

    Ebay's Worst Offerings

Nonsense. Yesterday I was congratulated on converting the previous day's anaemic offerings into something really tasty second time round. It was only braised beef though with veggies, and browned mash sealing in all the flavour. Maybe it is me but I think us chaps cook better given the chance.I can't eat Mrs Peter's spag bol without a chop or chicken portion. Her Pork in lemonade as well as her asparagus and kippers will be remembered for the wrong reason.I have also endured dill with a bit of salmon. I often cook on a Sunday with fresh veg,a good cut of meat and plenty of gravy and good wine To be honest, I'm not surprised. An unlikely combination. I always expect the unexpected with Mrs Peter.Off the logic rails sometimes but I wouldn't change a thing.
  4. There doesn't seem to be any control on early copper. Some dealers ask huge amounts for crap.A walk around the Midland coin fair has convinced me few dealers grade correctly and the price range is massive.

    Ebay's Worst Offerings

You have just denied Mrs Peter of her Chablis and my Cuban cigar this weekend.I couldn't refuse the 1679 after seeing so many.My one is in better condition but a bit of corrosion. Can't say I will sell it though. We all need a few...don't we Thanks Richard for the heads up..I've bought from John before.
  7. A drop of olive oil and a quick acentone dip will sort that.

    Recent aquisitions

£18 seems cheap. Their coins seem a tad on the expensive side and crap

    A grading attempt...

Thanks threepence. As a rule I only put in a bid equal to what I would pay for a grade lower than listed... when it is a dodgy photo, or I am unsure of the grade. As with any auction just know your limit. There is nothing worse than getting outbid on something you really want whether a live auction or Ebay. Bid what you would happily pay and not a penny more

    Anyone heard from Geordie?

He was on a barge on a canal the other day....lots of rain...ooop North

    A grading attempt...

Thanks Peck, the coin does look really attractive in hand. I will have to invest in a decent camera soon. I have ordered myself a x30 loupe, hopefully this will help me in educating myself to grade more accurately... Trial and error I guess! Have you bought the book on grading? and yes don't be too harsh on yourself with grades.Bag marks are acceptable on UNC coins. Your 2/6- is welcome a home at Peter Towers.
  12. I thought the 50p Britannia was one of the best portrayals ever (though the standing Britannia of Ed VII florins takes some beating). I liked standing Britannia but the date (forth digit)disappeared after 5 years in circulation.
  13. Wear patterns are often surprising. Look at the device between the ribbon and SHILLING - one side of it is worn right away. I think it's probably ok. Honestly would you want it? Maybe I have seen the light on crap coins. I am sitting here eating lobster and supping up some fine wines (10 am start tomorrow) Mrs Peter has just advised I have to be up early for the school run and there is no more wine left.(just a couple of crates of French larger). Good night You REALLY wouldn't want to see the image this conjures up in my head I meant lager....and I was up and out bright eyed and bushy tailed....well sort of.
  14. How did you manage to post that? When I try to reply to it, I get "The number of opening quote tags does not match the number of closing quote tags." I've amended your quoted post to correct it, otherwise it wouldn't let me post. I do seem to have the knack of pressing a few buttons and breaking things, never to see them work again! LOL - but you didn't get a message when you posted that? Re set to factory settings is the 1st thing I look for

I've amended your quoted post to correct it, otherwise it wouldn't let me post. Ah Peck...are you stumped I got a few nice Eddies from Germany (not Chris). I've stopped looking now because upgrading GEF is not an Ebay option (or a coin fair option) after I have gorged on steak, red wine etc the night before.
  16. There are some giveaway signs for the "no" H the Penny boys will let you know. Best thing you could do with your coin is drill a hole and use it as a washer
  17. Thanks for sharing the article with us Hussulo! It's certainly good to hear about these things. I definitely won't be buying any more U.S coins from online auctions. Will stick to dealers for these now Most sellers are OK.Just be careful with what you buy and how much you pay and where you buy it from.
  18. Long tail Q, Davies rev. A Thanks Rob! I was actually just looking at the ones you have for sale, I might go for both types you have on offer. Then I will only have to find the long tail to complete the set! Cripes, are you micro'ing' already, Mongo? It's testament to the quality of this forum that you are even giving it a go. As I've said over and over, a learning resource like this one is worth a dozen books and more. Having said that, you then need the books! But hooray for you, great stuff. Your thread's really inspired me! The resources, the books.... but I also need the money! I thought the 1887 shilling would be a good place to start with something like this, as the prices are affordable for me. I am also looking into the Old head Victoria farthings varieties, with the help of Colin and his Aboutfarthings site! You should have a go at the Edward VII farthings too, that's a good challenge in high grade and nice tone! Easy

There. I corrected it for you. Can he catch a fly with his chopsticks or do they get caught in his fly
  20. Here is the good news. The 1961 1d is the rarest of the 60's coins. Now the bad news only 48million produced. If UNC (not in a coffee tin) about £1.If you have a 1/2d phone the police.
  21. The only secure way to get a complete collection of anything is to produce it yourself... You are Ashmore and I claim my £5

Thanks Nick. Seems I may of been a bit generous, but not to far off for one of my first attempts, I am learning You are learning well

What is the blemish on this shilling?

I put together a nice little set of George 11 for my wife's friend whose husband collects George 11 furniture.Farthing 1754,half penny 1747,6d 1757,1/- 1758,2/6 1746. £50 and all were GF+ The coins were put into 2x2 flips and are framed and displayed in their downstairs cloakroom. At parties there is so much conversation.A few people have asked me to search their gardens with my detector.Good publicity I say. I have about 20 hits on their back lawn....16C mansion I can't wait to dig .It has been promised.

What is the blemish on this shilling?

Thanks Red Riley! That sentence really hits home. I was recently looking at some 1758 Shillings, I saw a coin graded GVF and toned with a couple of marks on it. I then saw an EF example that did not look nearly as nice to my eye, even though I could clearly see more defined detail. Being new to coins, I first thought well it MUST be better, as it is a higher grade. I think I am learning now, that if I like a coin, then the grade becomes less important The 1758 shilling is a very common coin.I must of bought and sold/swapped 20 of them.I go for eye appeal every time. A really nice one can be picked up for around £20ish.Get a nice toned example.
  25. You never know Peter! King Charles? William?... You might be lucky Now that is going to be difficult... an attractive portrait of Charles! Err look at the Royalty over the centuries....not attractive...I give you Liz 1,Anne,George 111.Even in their prime I would list under PUG. I dont know, Anne looks pretty fit... I definitley would! She is over 300 years old....I think there is a name for that.
