  1. I have put bids in way over estimate (absentee bids) and been blown out of the water. If I want a couple of £200 coins I'm hardly going to spend the best part of a day and £40 in fuel and still may miss out.Auctions can be too clinical.
  2. Look at the attempt at pense on the reverse
  3. I'm sure there are undiscovered varieties nestling in the soil of every county.
  4. Coins are easier to get into the house than new fishing gear or pretty maidens.

  5. I've had a look but the double strike has thrown me.These beggers are hard enough with a single crisp strike. As Rob has said Clive may help...also don't forget Geordie.I'Ding monarchs/monyers/classes would suit debating societies.
  6. Thread hijack....I agree you get the same feature with some farthings where the prep marks are visible, the 1902 weak breastplate is a fine example!! Just to add there is a well struck variety as well for 1902(the weak breastplate being rarer but only obvious on GEF+ examples)
  7. Debbie Noting your interest.Try goggling Hobo tokens. There are some real works of art.
  8. Slightly off topic but in coin news the mint said the mintage of 10,000 Kew Garden 50p was a mistake and true mintage was 250,000. These with the pre 47 6d's at £20 and all these new issues makes me think they have got a marketing snide.

    very old coin?

There isn't a farthing or halfpenny dated 1727.So I would assume it will be 1721.Not a rare year until you search for varieties. If you have difficulty reading the date the condition sounds poor and worth maybe a few £ on Ebay.
  10. Bob that is so nice.Give me a toned unlustred without carbon spots every time.
  11. The coins that come out of the brecklands are super.A light sandy soil and I have bought a few. :P :P :)

Why try and clean a lustred surface.I successfully cleaned a 1737 Large date 1/4d with gunk all over it.It went from £10 to £150 in seconds.A bit of heat sometimes works. I have put hairlines on a 1787 1/- so be carefull. All the dipped coin boys on Ebay bring tears to my eyes...but hey the dipped boys are creating their own market...just try selling outside ebay.Narkeypoon et all.
  13. Thanks Colin I've just made sure we have the basic version on all the pooters. This looks like a goodun. We had a snide version of ancient proportions.OK I remember supercalc.

Thanks Bob That is good enough to me. Miracle cures just don't exist. A bit of hot soapy water,a softened cocktail stick seems to be the only remedy.
  15. I agree it looks like a fake which has been accepted into the market and retailed by an honest dealer.Oh dear.
  16. I can definitely vouch for the seller. Martin's a top gentleman. The edge knock on the reverse (previously mentioned in a post positioned @ 7 o'clock)above the m (just after the date)is there. So many "experts" are oblivious to fakes which seem to be passed down the line as genuine. I think there is room in the market for a book on fakes and what to look out for.I understand there is a lot of hammered gold fakes, sovereigns, northumberland 1/-'s,1905 2/6,Ashmore,1822 Crowns,Anne 1/4d's,Charles 1 1/-,Bun head 2/6's etc & many foreign coins. Contemporary fakes have their place in the hobby. But modern fakes made to scam the collector!!! I also have been made aware there is quite an industry in Bulgaria making Roman Coins.

I wouldn't mind trying that but it's not available in the UK and limited availability in the US.One for the dragons den methinks.

    Ebay's Worst Offerings

Who the hell has the cheek to sell/buy this absolute rubbish? http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/1690-S-Halfpenny-William-III-1514-/120847062907?pt=UK_Coins_BritishMilled_RL&hash=item1c230bd77b
  19. Right...now lets see an 1882 no H 1d.
  20. It is a bit of history but unfortunatly cleaned. However the grade is very low so a £7 coin becomes 50p. Get yourself an uncirculated, uncleaned version and then you can appreciate the beauty of the Victorian Bun head copper.
  21. I'll get in first. More's model ?

  23. Buying from eBAY is OK if from a reputable seller with a returns policy. Know your subject and caveat emptor. There are pitfalls/fakes/idiots on eBAY but sometimes some nice coins.

    Celtic Coin

I wouldn't guess a value. It would need correct marketing etc for publicity to the Celtic collectors. One thing though it is in poor condition which will work against it.
  25. After reading the forum a while back about Northumberland shillings it is one coin I would leave well alone unless buying from a reputable dealer or a coin slabbed by a top grading company.John is right the Chinese have been doing this one for a while.Ebay...you must be joking.
