    Ebay's Worst Offerings

It's nice to see Peck and Bob showing their colours Looking back at old coin mags there were coin fairs every week seemingly all over the country. We can't be far away from 3D viewing of coins so you can get in close to that rare av circ 1899 1D.

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/WESTMINSTER-20TH-CENTURY-MONARCHS-PENNIES-COLLECTION-/260862662841?pt=UK_Coins_OtherBritish_RL&hash=item3cbca058b9 A warning to new collectors....avoid gimmicky dealers. The coins in this set really have no value
  4. Another spectacular coin Rob,the pick of the litter. Love the Bun penny. It would of helped if they had focussed the obverse...well maybe not.
  5. Like Peck I would let it go now. Always take a profit (and a handsome one).I have messed about with my (now frozen)pension fund and took profit in various sectors, bought low, sold high etc etc OK you might not hit the actual peaks but you avoid troughs. . Melt is currently about 53p per gram and any coin F+ will always reap more than this.

Gosh, yes. I'd pay to slab a valuble coin too ... Well, if he didn't know before, now he can have every confidence that he's got a genuine, Fine 15 example of a 1917 penny Just imagine if you had spent 6p on a 1917 circulated penny only to realise it wasn't real
  7. I think you missed the boat here. Some how we might, just might know what melt value is.

Thats more like it You've got some nice history and coins there. As you know the shilling and 3ds are 50% silver and a decent grade. You can now catalogue them and protect them and see if you can find out what similar ones are selling for on ebay.
  12. The most I have spent on a farthing is £380 (364,800 x face) if it was a crown £91,200 equivalent. I have spent over £100 probably 50+ x mainly in the £100 to £200 bracket. I have only ever won 1 coin at auction but have lumped on a few where I have been blown away However with the price of gold etc some older purchases would now beat my record. I'm quite happy clipping away at the lower £ range Unlimited funds...mmmm but wouldn't it take the fun out of collecting. You hear of some rich collectors just using dealers to hunt down coins...where is the satisfaction in this? I have just sold an old Rob purchase for 110% profit and 4 colonial BU early 20C coins for £36....they cost me 5p each. I'm also happy to sift through a dealers tin for interesting bits. The main thing about my hobby is that I can still enjoy it when not buying and at anytime can confidently sell some to pursue something else. I've sold over £1000 of bits in the last month and have a few £1000 more earmarked to go...I'm sure some more will come in as will a bit of pre 19C furniture (I do use my pal for advice on this but again only want to buy what I like and hopefully use)
  13. Once you've filled your ISA allowance 0.0025% interest is available for savings...ummm 5k earns you £12.50 gross Why not treat yourself to that coin you've always wanted. As long as the homework is done and a decent buy follows...why not.
  14. My thoughts exactly. As for 'several hundreds', I think that would only apply to rare or particularly good examples. I can think of any number of coins priced in hundreds where provenance would make little impression. However, where it is 'thousands' that is a different matter. I've never spent four figures on a coin, and I'm not sure even if my most valuable specimen would get there. The number of collectors spending those kind of sums must be pretty small, and I would expect many of them to know each other anyway. I'm sure Rob didn't know the Earl of Pembroke or he has been lying about his age.ALL the Cooke collections have been sold with the name adding a premium...look at what punters were willing to pay for the modern BU copper....how many of these will end up on Ebay and sell for a few pence when the collector dies and the family don't realise. When the Colin Cooke collection of 1/4d's was sold they were listed (where possible)with their provenance...and yes I spent £100's not £1000's. I'm certainly not a big player but I think the £1000+ collectors are numerous...don't forget the coin market is more global than ever and US collectors pay huge premiums for 1 extra grade on a coin...let alone an Earl of Pembroke coin.
  15. I won't liken it exactly but a car or motorbikes history helps. When I sold a motorbike to a dealer the eventual new owner got in touch with me and I could add a bit of history(the dealer had lost!!! a load of receipts for replacement small end bearings of which it ate)...I believe he moved it on. If I was buying an Unc common 1853 1/4d for £50 I wouldn't give a monkies where it came from, but a unique rare quality piece from Montaque/Peck/Johnson/Cooke for several hundred £'s I would love their observations on it/how much they paid etc etc. Rob..I'm sure the TPG's would love the info on provenance and pay you well.
  16. Maybe a trip to Cambridge? Fitzwilliam catalogues There are copies in the BM, the Fitzwilliam, the Ashmolean and the Warburg Institute according to M & R. Whether they have buyers' names though is another matter. Spink will have a copy of the catalogue and Baldwins may possibly have one, though their library is a little disorganised. Peters business idea's patent...RPcoins-ancestorycoin.co.uk
  17. So what's half of death? The calibre of attendees at the Labour party conference....or maybe I'm too generous.
  18. A few of these appear on ebay (pemember the 5th of Novemember)I believe. I don't think they are sought after...well only by folk to spend.
  19. Cnut...The veiled head penny of the pre 12C series. Nice coins and 10 years ago £60 each at Colin Cookes in VF/VF+ Not quite in a Williams league. I remember that offer. I now wish I'd got one. As it is, I did get one of those UNC-with-bags-of-lustre 1873 farthings he had for £9 I was buying a few hammered at the time.I can remember a list or the latest coin mag arriving and getting on the phone 1st thing to reserve a coin.
  20. Nice bog head! Wonder whether cargo was bullion or coin Rumour has it the cargo was 1903 & 05 Halfcrowns...that would worry a couple of Chinese manufacturers.

Have you tried your local Chinese restaurant. The moral of the story here is make sure all your coins are ID'd.

    Ebay's Worst Offerings

Well, you say that. But it's actually London Coins, a UK firm. Of course it shouldn't be too surprising given their interest in swaying us all to the benefits of slabs. But £80?? For a £2 coin? Will anyone buy do you think? It's the London Coin Company, not to be confused with London Coins Ltd who have the close link to CGS UK. It has also been graded by PCGS who are American.
