Yep...its a genuine £2.00 coin.Only in America. I was sent a MS66 1953 quarter (PCGS) from my American buddy.Silly money. I felt guilty of sending him some UNC raw coins. But I did send a couple of hammered.

2 curious questions for my inquisitive mind

On count back I have 8 albums,6 linder trays,2 aluminium cases with 6 trays in each,8 trays,6 small numis albums and 5 boxes to sort/catalogue. My plan is to down size big time and put everything into 1 cabinet....It may take a while as coins coming in are about the same as going out.The coming in are a tad more expensive. -

Apart from a few Rose farthings Ch1 was my 1st hammered.I have moved over the series and at one time was collecting by Monarch.I now prefer quality...unfortunatly this is proving expensive.I have a couple of as struck hoard coins and find a pleasure in studying around the subject. -

A man/lady who moves to Ilford from Wessex (Bournmouth area?)...wow she/he must of been a looker. Truth is MOST good hammered stay in the collection.Trays of rubbish at coin fairs plus Ebay .This is one area where the collector needs his friendly dealer. -
Bun pennies with inner linear circle
Peter replied to davidrj's topic in Confirmed unlisted Varieties.
You THINK its overpriced David lol, its definately overpriced. 50 quid coin, Ticks all the boxes as a nice looking coin.Beautifully toned with a nice bust -
We like that too - it reduces the number of unintelligible dialects one has to decifer from 2,139 to 2,138. Oh, and I'm not 100% but I believe whippets now attract a surcharge on the congestion tariff ( there have been a few unfortunate incidents with Northerners getting lost for days and dogs being parboiled in their cars) so you'll need to consider that before setting sail. You can bring your pigeons though, plenty here already. Ooop North the predecimal coins are still circulating. you have to go to Scotland though for the George 111 evasion copper. All the fairs are worth investigating and I would recommend them for any new collectors as prices are usually better value than Ebay. Its also a chance to see and even handle coins that you could only dream of.

Predecimal Denomination.

There are a lot of punters getting burnt by gold sharks. The average Joe doesn't possess accurate scales or understand purity of gold or even how to ID it. -
"Do not store up for yourself coin treasures on earth, where moth and rust may corrupt ..." Bloody iphone spelling at its best yet again (honest) Interesting that the iPhone prefers "moth" to "month" !!! I'm sure there is a bit of "sausage finger"...how does the saying go...A bad Scotsman always blames his tool.

I don't carry thousands to fairs but cash seems to be the talk.I have used a credit card once when there was a coin I had to have but I paid a mixture of cash and credit card. Regarding Coinex,I worked in London for several years...commuting 190 miles a day...I hate the place.I wouldn't be happy on trapsing accross the City post or pre fair with loads of coins/cash. Midland its a 250 round trip but you can park FOC within 50 yds of the fair. Its a pleasant Sunday morning run & listening to the football on the way home. You just get lucky sometimes and have always enjoyed my day.You have to rummage and get through the chaff.I wouldn't go expecting anything in particular but keep an open mind.A couple of our members also sometimes have a table.

2 curious questions for my inquisitive mind
Peter replied to azda's topic in British Coin Related Discussions & Enquiries
Hammered can be anything from dire to as struck (and well struck) just as milled. Grading companies tend to be in the dark when it comes to hammered. Consequently the NGC grades for example tend to be over the top. A recent US sale had a coin graded MS65 where the strike was so bad you struggled to read it. It probably was uncirculated, but only because they had difficulty identifying it as coin of the realm and stuck it in the pending tray. Strike quality is a major contributing factor with hammered - a fact they seem oblivious to. Ignore the label on hammered coin slabs and decide for yourself if the coin is evenly and well struck, nicely centred and doesn't have any cracks or splits. That is a few too many parameters for a numbers based grading system. Spot on Rob. I believe it is a US born need to be told/reassured what a coin is and its grade and the better TPG's will even guarentee this. The premium for another grade point can be massive. When presented with a hammered coin usual factors don't/cannot apply. As struck hammered should all be MS...ERR take a look at the 1st strike Edward 1 pennies Use your eyes when buying hammered, ignore the grade. What appeals to you will probably appeal to others.I have sent back several bought blind hammered and nowadays won't buy blind. Spink do themselves no favours with F & VF....why not just a price range? The beauty of hammered...you can dig em up and even clean them. -
I've actually bought a few coins from this seller and have been quite happy.Just ignore the grade and buy the coin. They certainly do come well packaged

I think those particular farthings are being sold by a member of these forums Tom. I actually thought it looked quite reasonable, if a little pale. ? I don't think so Peck. The other coins he is selling point to a non collector who has "aquired" a few half decent coins and buffed a few and tried to ID a few. No way either of the 2 members here with a few 1825 1/4d's. Yes - didn't you see the thread from our friend who has bought a lot of UNC 1825 farthings? It COULD just be a coincidence of course... What other coins? Tom's link only points to the 1825 farthing. Look at his other coins for sale.

Its not so much of a laugh but.... If any of you are tempted by the 45x magnifier with LED lights for £14.50 (delivered) which is currently being pushed on ebay (The seller has 30+ positive feedbacks already this month). You can get the same item for £1.37 (delivered)from China or HK.There is also a UK seller £4.62 (delivered). I bought one from China and it does the job. I won't give you links but just put x 45 magnifier into your Ebay search. Now I know how Poundland do it. We spent £15 on bits for my daughters forthcoming party which would of cost over £100 in Sainsburys.

There is something dodgy about this seller.I wonder how he obtained these coins? With fingers that size you wouldn't want to find out though

Might I suggest this: http://www.diy.com/diy/jsp/bq/nav.jsp?action=detail&fh_secondid=11247835&fh_view_size=10&fh_location=%2f%2fcatalog01%2fen_GB%2fcategories%3c%7b9372015%7d%2fcategories%3c%7b9372043%7d%2fcategories%3c%7b9372176%7d%2fcategories%3c%7b9392052%7d&fh_eds=%c3%9f&isSearch=false I think Rob may take one to the next fair as he "browses" your table.

Royal Mint Commemorative tat
Peter replied to Red Riley's topic in British Coin Related Discussions & Enquiries
Have a competion on here and use them as prizes or have a 25p tin at the next fair. We've just cleared the loft and plan on shifting all that tat that has value but you know you will never use. We're going to do a carboot soon with my daughters taking the cash and we will come home via the dump. This includes a suitcase full of "CDESteve" coins. -
Natural or artificial toning?
Peter replied to Nick's topic in British Coin Related Discussions & Enquiries
"Antiques and Collectables", often in the SW? Glenn Ogden present? Nope...300 miles East and up a fair bit. I am aware of the one in Exeter though. It was nice to see brisk business.I shall watch out for more. One seller was advertising that he also specialised in coins and stamps. He pointed to a pile of collectors albums which held my attention for 27 seconds and that was only because 2 pages of cupro nickel shillings were stuck together. -
Natural or artificial toning?
Peter replied to Nick's topic in British Coin Related Discussions & Enquiries
OK, I'll go first with a classic bit of fence sitting of the 'I would need to see it in the hand' variety. What is the obverse like? Here's the obverse. I will join Dereck on the fence. However it is very pleasant. I wouldn't have any qualms in buying, selling or keeping it. -
Natural or artificial toning?
Peter replied to Nick's topic in British Coin Related Discussions & Enquiries
I bought 5 (70's)proof sets over the weekend.3 sets are fine with slight toning to the coins but in 2 sets the cupro nickel coins were specked with black dots. The copper coins however are rainbow effect. All sets were sealed and the card covers perfect. Previously I believed all rainbow effect copper was artificial. The cupro have been liberated so let the experiments begin the copper will be sold. I picked these up at a postcard fair(which was advertised as a collectors fair) The few coins available were either cheap or silly money Let me say I had a good day. -

George III Half Crown - Chinese Fakes
Peter replied to seuk's topic in British Coin Related Discussions & Enquiries
It looks like the Chinese just need a bit of quality control. A plus point is that their raw materials are/have increased.
