Spink 2007 is OK as a reference. However if you want the latest (2011) coin values from 1797 to date Rotographics book (Collectors coins GB)at about £6 is excellent value and gives an insight on some of the popular varieties. Maybe narrow your field of collecting and buy the best you can afford. Silver and gold coins are at record levels and the best bun pennies are steaming hot. There are some nice Irish coins to collect from 17C onwards (nice 1/4d's and 1/2d's) I love the Wood's copper from 1722/23. Ebay is OK and convenient but some low grade stuff goes for silly money. Rather than just internet get a few dealers lists (adverts in coin monthly) request a few and order a few coins and you will soon get the jist of the better dealers. Pecks done a nice job on grading...BTW ebay prices for 1887 jubilee coins are way over the top. Welcome to thr forum.

One for the Farthing boys
Peter replied to argentumandcoins's topic in British Coin Related Discussions & Enquiries
Fascinating piece of trench art there, must have been a bloke, because he has erased Mary!! Never seen anything like that before, are you selling John? I do collect love tokens in the form of farthings, got a few but nothing that early. Wonder if the N was removed or the result of a filled die.... I never noticed the N Colin. I couldn't work out why the date has been altered to 1696? A very good job on it mind as the 4 is all but unrecognisable. When I first saw the obverse I thought a typical worn William 96 but the obverse suprised me being W&M. Now what has happened to the date? A good 0 & a typical 6 all from a 94 !!!!!. Who ever did this maybe could make me a nice 1693. Colin why trench art?...most of the art involved the current circulation coins at the time not a 220 year old coin. This is such a good example that it further gives me doubt of the authenticity of 1676 and 1693...and Dave I think it is a open 6 over tooth but not worn enough to be worth £20k plus & your oldest copper penny is Everything can be for sale (other than pennies and halfcrowns) but, I wouldn't have any idea what a fair price would be on it. -
I wonder who you're talking about? My question too. Here's my memory of the guys I used to frequent in the 1990s : Dave Craddock - had some very nice stuff, but a lot of cheaper stuff too Wayne Nichols - another mixed-bag guy, who could probably exist off his best stuff Stephen Lockett - an enormous range Dan ?Daley (the other half of Lockdale) - ditto Dorset Coins - a lot of modern stuff, but nothing VERY highly priced Windsor Coins - some nice pieces but generally trading off the lower ends My first thought is that none of those guys fit the description, but maybe I'm WAY out of date? KB coins.....a super copper section but too hot.

My wife calls it coin collectors stoop. A drop of pain relief gel on Sunday evening is called for. & Colin they supply chairs for us farthing buffs so we can go through the 50p boxes whilst the Penny boys need their bankmanagers to OK some scummy worn "open 3" discs.

I wonder who you're talking about? I shared a stall at the June Fair and although other dealers do have a snoop round before the show opens, there is literally too much stuff for everything worthwhile to be snapped up, so it's not all doom and gloom. It certainly isn't doom and gloom. The young collector can fill his boots up on stuff that costs 2or3x more on Ebay.I also have got an unused North 1 for £10.Subscribed to Coin news and got loads of old copies FOC.Bought Rotographic publications and many, many coins. One tip though is that the lighting can be awful so plenty of carrots the night before and an illuminated glass will help. PS going every 3 months enables me to sneek enough £ out of the cash point to throw Mrs Peter off the scent.

I attend a few every year. The 4 bigger ones are Dec,March,June & Sept. It is a hunt to find decent stuff at the right price but it is there. Decent stuff with clear good prices doesn't exist. It will be snapped up before the fair opens. Likewise I have seen joe public turn up with some half decent coins and get shafted. Its a bit of an old pals act and I reckon you will need to get known. I've sold a few coins and notes there and have done a few trade ins.One particular well known (non internet)dealer has massive stunning stocks and massive prices. He probably only needs to sell a few per week.

The subject is fairly wide. We can point you in the right direction if you let us know your interests and depth of study.

GeorgeIII shilling 1820

Welcome back young Patrick. Looking forward to 6 weeks off school? John Oh those heady days of no mortgage, cycling 25 miles with a kreel and rod bag on my back to fish the fen drains, being fitter than a butchers dog...the big attraction of young ladies and beer ahead of me. Grandparents still alive. Any youngsters reading this appreciate what you have now and while you're at it come and mow my lawn. -
I use trays but they are not fool proof...hence my wife dropped (before decorating)4 trays of farthings and mixing all my varieties and tickets up. Try looking for an aluminium case which comes with 6 trays to take different coins.Very reasonable(£20 or £30) and the coins stay put (I use 2 of these)They also act as my chosen method of safely transporting coins.

You can buy ones which require stapling together but I would recommend the ones with self adhesive (you live and learn)
-
You can purchase 2 x 2 coin flips which fit into some coin album pages or simply store them in a box.The flips can be written on and give the coin some degree of protection. I think we all started with albums. You can buy them on this site.

GeorgeIII shilling 1820

A nice bit of history...nearly 200 years old. The silver content is sterling (92.5%) and would of bought a meal and flagon of ale in its day. -

Flat disc collectors alert!
Peter replied to argentumandcoins's topic in British Coin Related Discussions & Enquiries
As I told my wife when we first met "sometimes you just have to take what you can get pet" 11 to 20 known i think i read, probably rarer that the 1903 open 3, so you may be quite correct in your statement John, one sold recently on ebay by alfnail, think it was AVF or less, went for 500-600 quid or there abouts, let us know when its on fleabay It's not mine Dave. It's in an auction. I agree with 49. Regardless of how rare it is I wouldn't touch that. & some of these "rareities" must be sitting in attics and grannies drawers and even collectors scrap tins.(as was proven on a thread here recently). -
Walking holiday from Salisbury to Lyme Regis. Nearly 100 miles and 200 horse-fly bites! Wow! Half a mile to the bite! Thats pretty good... I managed about 30seconds to the bite down the allotment the other night! Was only about half hour, but my legs think they've been run over by an Abrams tank! It must be our pure blood my arm looks like a junkies where I have been scratching it.Damn mozzies Hahaha. Don't mistake a horse-fly for a mozzie! Horse flies are like mini wasps and have a very nasty bite. I have been bitten by a horse fly...funnily enough only when in the SW & yep its painfull...the mozzie attack is more of a nuisance due to the itching. One little tip...Poundland have a great range of insect bite preventers and soothers. problem sorted...now just the Adders to contend with.

I think you mean 2p not 1p !! To me, the supposed scarcity of 1988 £1 coins is something of a myth. The mintage figure is high enough, but perhaps they really ARE scarce. If so does anyone know why? I think they are the the best looking reverse for £1. I took a few from circulation and they are not common.I believe I spent them after finding an AUNC and getting the 1988 year set. Ones from circulation do sell for a few £ on ebay.

I see the 1936 wreath crown is back on....ummm Brianscoin? the plot is thickening. http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/1936-GEORGE-V-WREATH-CROWN-EXTREMELY-RARE-/330583898897?pt=UK_Coins_BritishMilled_RL&hash=item4cf855fb11

Boadicea all the way & I'm Iceni related with a bit of Roman,Celt and Viking thrown in no doubt. Mumbai had initially to be explained to me...I thought the Company that I was working for had changed their IT back up from Bombay. Yes they were still crap and about as much use as a cat employed as a mouse catcher in a fish factory.
