Bob we do... From looks to reliability and the reward my wife gave me a no brainer. It clunks and is the best car in over 30 years and still has 2 years guarentee.....apart from a PUG 205 which I bought for pence (taking car allowance 10 years ago)...why did I sell it? I take my mother shopping every week and she prefers the coupe with its heated seat etc

    The 1926 ME penny

We are going through a phase of enlightenment...my kids appreciate 1698 & 1717 farthings etc but once questioned don't appreciate 1840 2 pronged farthings or R over E's.Look at Spink and it fails.

Thanks Bob Looks like a job for tonight. I need to calm down after my daughters fought over my DSLR last night and snapped the lens...I had just won £10 on the lottery and bought a 1853 incuse 1/4d for peanuts and also had a few bob on Birmingham beating Arsenal. Then my garage phoned and repairs to my car will be £1000.

    The 1926 ME penny

.I had half a dozen 1988's plucked from circulation and then I bought a BU for £3.50 so I spent them.
  7. Let us see outer Mongolia special 10p editions and the latest banknotes from Asia.....sorry not interested. Mr Mussell please take note.

    The 1926 ME penny

Yep I have no interest whatsoever.
  10. I bought a bulk lot of CM's and earlier mags and have tagged all the interesting articals. They are by my bedside and used for constant reference.Old Coin news mags end up in the blue bin.

    The 1926 ME penny

I have 3. 2 from circulation and 1 for £4.99 (bit better than fine). I can't say they are very rare..at least not against other coins which just don't appear on Ebay or lists or fairs...we all know what they are don't we.

It is his mistake...the way he has acted is pathetic. Report him to Ebay. I once won a GVF gothic florin for £10 as England were playing in the world cup & yes he claimed he had misplaced it.

    Making a quick buck

That's a 'how long is a piece of string?' question. No two coins are the same, some dates are more desirable than others and some denominations are more desirable than others. Coupled with the fact that not all desirable dates for one denomination are the same as those for a different denomination and you can easily see that there is no straightforward answer. The first thing you need to do is acquaint yourself with grades and grading. Get some experience in grading coins and see what they sell for when compared with references such as CCGB or Spink. ebay is not the best indicator of pricing because too many things sell for far more than they should and conversely so. In the case of pennies and farthings, 1849 is a good starting point, though you might take a while to get out of the blocks. Obviously the price to buy for needs to be lower than a selling price, but things starting at an elevated price on ebay frequently don't sell because most buyers are greedy. They want everything for 99p and consequently most will disregard the £100 coin priced at £75 BIN because they live in hope that the seller will give up trying to realise a decent price and offer them the chance of a real steal rather than a bargain. okay i shall have a good trawl through 1849 thanks for the advice my i aask what CCGB is an SPINK ? Collectors Coins Great Britain & Spink are the main reference for all UK coins....don't bother buying coins until you have these bad boys. Predecimal produce CCGB and I would suggest you start with this (1797 - 2010).On the Predecimal main site Chris gives advice on key dates....don't expect to make money buying and selling on Ebay...it is hit and miss.

Offer and acceptance and the other scenario of caveat emptor. This will be interesting. If I were Torcoins I would honour it...you have ample time to check your listing before uploading and if you don't check an expensive coin then suffer you must.

I bet Mr Torcoins mouth has just gone dry and a cold sweat has ensued.
  17. Melt price for sovereigns is just less than £200 (just over 8 grams of 22ct gold). No metal melter would scrap anything decent unless he was brain dead.
  18. Smiths in Bury St Eds doesn't stock it. Considering how much I spend on coins £34 isn't much. I agree with Bob.."a view from the bay" is often interesting and there are sometimes interesting subjects written on but compared to CM it isn't in the same league.
  19. I have no problems with melting coins. No one would melt anything which is worth more than the copper /silver /gold content and it would get rid of a lot of rubbish.I would also like to melt a few Ebay sellers who list junk.
  20. Coin news still stands alone...I got the subscription for Xmas £34...most issues are fairly bland and read in less than an hour. With the old CM there were interesting surveys/pieces on varieties and I often bought from the adverts. I do go for periods without CN but return....pity it can't improve.

Can you spend sovereigns in a shop?

outbid again I shall wait for the snipe. but don't tell anyone
  22. Thanks for that Hus, it will give me a chance to try and at least study images of one!! Looks like you have struck gold...Well done.
  23. Scott I have hundreds of varieties (or subtle differences with pre 1775 1/4d's) Whenever I go for an upgrade or just can't resist another it will invariably be different and end up as a keeper. I keep my 1/4d's in Linder trays and from experience leave big gaps between dates . Post 1806 and Colin has done the donkey work...although I won't search for every variety...yet

    Slabbed values

The Yanks will pay a huge premium for a MS66 against MS64 although both are uncirculated...its the need to have the best which drives the price up.Love it or hate it if punters are prepared to pay...let them. It knocks Spink prices ...so if you have a really brilliant BU that you want to sell it maybe worth slabbing (as long as it is a fairly valuable coin)
