Irish and Scottish coins demand a premium...because they are rare and too many collectors are after these...especially the Scots and Irish.I always look for Bury coins as this is my home town and will pay over the odds for nice examples. Some of the rarer mints I will go for....forget London & Canterbury.

Colin we must be in contact regarding bidding on 1/4d's...I remember snatching a few off you in the states

It is Irish...I have a couple of examples but I'm no expert.

Peter replied to Kronos's topic in British Coin Related Discussions & Enquiries
Ahhhh a mongrol race..just like my feral cat who never needs to go to the vet unlike my Springer. Luckily my wife is half Irish and my daughters have wet nose's and never ill...apart from asking them to clean their rooms. -
Ibought a snide version of all the books plus more for less than a fiver.I would never buy a book although I have taken them on library a few times.I have the hard copy of 20C but doubt I've ever used it.

There is one dealing with collecting coins from your change and it may help you. It is aptly called 'Check Your Change' and it has a wealth of information on Decimal coins. It is quite cheap and can be found quite easily. As a new collector myself who collects Commemorative £2 and 50p's, I have recently purchased the book and I can highly recommend it. Chris Perkins the site owner publish book under the Rotographic banner. It can be purchased from this site,Ebay and Amazon and it is £6.30 I belive amust for modern coin collectors

I fished the Tay in the 80's whilst staying at Taymouth castle (friends had the lease)there were 9 of us and we drank the Kenmore Hotel dry.The only fish we caught were tiny trout smaller than the spinners we were using.I wandered to the river with my air rifle in one hand and a bottle of scotch in the other...I was sober but the ghillie wanted to call the police...oh to be young again.

New Dealer Website
Peter replied to Red Riley's topic in British Coin Related Discussions & Enquiries
I have 2 problems with the RM in nearly 1000 deliveries....a Q1 3d never arrived and it was a beauty plus an envelope had been opened and the coin removed...can't be bad...we used to send cash in cards to family in Harrogate always went missing. -
Opinions needed on two Sovereigns please
Peter replied to davevt's topic in British Coin Related Discussions & Enquiries
I have an example of most gold coins...but haven't bought any over the last few years my sovs cost £60 each and the half sovs £40 my spade £110 and half spade £50...not a bad investment. However Mr Cooke was selling Cnut coins for £60 each and I didn't fill my boots....also looking back on some coin mags the 1960 crown was tipped to be the best investment...not. My tip for a good investment would be a 1835 2/6 a 1894 1/2d 1734 1/4d and 1679 1/4d...all these rarely turn up on Ebay. Please don't bid against me -
Dark and Toned or Bright and Lustrous?
Peter replied to RobJ's topic in British Coin Related Discussions & Enquiries
Although I like lustre a nice even tone is my preference...I can't put up with carbon spots, finger prints or the dreaded green evil. Silver unless its black looks nice...a nice uncleaned blue tone if I was pushed. -
My wife was 19 when we met so I suppose I have the Tee shirt
-
I'm 49 but often feel an eighteen year old....I wish...hang on I really can't be bothered ...a good book glass of wine and a peek at the daily star will suffice.

1876 H farthing - "large 6", "RF.G" or both?
Peter replied to Voynov_BG's topic in British Coin Related Discussions & Enquiries
A nice coin....large 6 and in AVF....expect to pay £25. When a more in depth study of farthings is on the market the prices will rocket so get in now. With farthings I hate selling...but love buying...the original farthing specialist has a lot explain to Mrs Peter about my habbit. I must have over 1000 to go through and ID (plus my date run was complete)....it is these large 6 types that the collection is never closed. Take a look at Colins aboutfarthings web site it is a real dig in the ribs. -
My wife now appreciates why I have over 20 reels and rods...it took a lot of wine though.
-
Even though I'm not a dedicated penny man...I am tempted the 1827 is so nice and will appreciate.

My girls seem to believe Dads wallet gives birth to hard cash. Last night we went to the school Xmas fair and I think I may have bought my own Xmas present. The mulled wine was good...I bet it would start my lawnmower. I must locate a decent coin for Grandma to buy for me.

I went out today for an extended lunch and had the pleasure of an afternoon on more wine and Ebay....what a load of tatt.My eldest daughter has just found my banknote and cheque albums and insists I sell them as I don't have a keen interest....she will be after my fossils and Jazz mags soon. She see's my paypal account as an easy touch....whatch out for teenage daughters my eldest says I'm loaded...I'm not but she is clucking at my collection and a life time passion...it would quickly go to New look etc.I mentioned the gold could go...but at the expense of better copper...none of the household women were impressed.

1887 Half Crown
Peter replied to King Norton's topic in British Coin Related Discussions & Enquiries
The YH (BUN) of 1887 are sought after. I bought a GVF 2/6 for £40 from a dealer....it wasn't GVF but I kept all the same...It was the fine price...the dealer is an expert on tokens...I also got a 1875 small date 1/4d and a 1849 1/4d both EF for £6 each. There was a dealer at the Midland Coin fair who had ef 1869 1/4ds for £5 each..I filled my boots...just know your subject and enjoy. No one is a expert on ALL coins.I once went to a coin fair and ended up with a 1750 holster pistol..shot myself in the foot.Alhough after much debate with Mrs Peter she has forgiven me.I've bought more treasures than turds...and I married her. -
Tin farthings...ermm...I have an example but when a tatty one is worth £?...I will look elsewhere. A nice one for a tenner Scott. A big lottery win maybe would help...but copper is (to me) Nr1

Ebay has destroyed our grading system when their fines become EF.A recent coin fair a dealer was selling F 2/6's for (and marked GVF) When I made a commet he did take offence but the neibouring dealer backen me up. Some dealers both online and at fairs are the exception...one dealer I orded from phoned me to say I wouldn't like the coin.
