    First Coin Buying Expedition

Don't flood the market...I remember when Mr Cooke bought a hoard of 1886's and still has loads left. Imagine a hoard of 1717's or 1698's It took me a long time, patience and expense to get these at the right price and condition.

She makes me wear the red cords and tweed jacket plus she bought me a bottle of musty aftershave so I could fit in completly...bless. But when you see some guy unroll a wad of notes for an Oxford shilling plus the conversations are always polite maybe we have got it right....Even some of the dealers leave me to paw over their coins trusting me not to slip one in my pocket. Its just respect and a nice day out. I do wonder why there haven't been more muggings....I often walk in with several £100 and walk out with a ruck sack full of coins. Try the Ansty Mcdonalds hotel they used to do a family room for £99 which included dinner and breakfast....plus their selection of malt is unbeatale...although expensive...good pub down the road

Colin I tend to go when we can have a family weekend away either staying at Ansty Hotel or the village in Coventry. However we now have a Springer it makes it much more difficult. Otherwise its a sprint up thhe A14 early Sunday morning.....its often an expensive day out Where did all the 1825 farthings come from?I seem to have amassed loads of 1720's and 1853's with the early farthings there are so many varities....I have to keep them all. I need to spend some time on my farthings as the collection is out of control.....luckily there are few winter nights ahead. I use your website but it makes my collection grow Plus my wife has dropped me off at the fair before and has commented on the sad so and so's with their note pads and wants list...I don't think I'm quite that bad...yet.

Buy the best you can afford. Quality is always sort after...bide your time and the select coins will come along. I go to the Midland coin fair maybe 3/4 times per year but I don't pannick if no purchase is made within the first hour. I've bought a few duds from Ebay and dealers....another tip is eye appeal a grotty EF is useless against a nice GF. Good luck on your hunt....I've probably made only 10 purchases over the last year with hundreds over the last few years an expensive lesson.
  6. These are issued every year by the reighing king/queen...not a lot of collectors as they were never in circulation apart from the 3d...about £80 to £100 max nice for a keepsake but not a sought after series. I haven't even tried to get some and being an avid collector says a lot.
  7. There isn't a good method of cleaning apart from soap and water

    Coin photography

I have a Nikon D40 and although a few years old I wouldn't swap it. If not too serious a Sony Cyber shot is always a good bet.
  11. Herr Rob My wife is Northern Irish and wasn't brought up on credit...However £60 dissapeared from my wallet overnight and my daughters and wife just laugh... Even the dog gets steak. I must admit to a bit of pampering and me and the cat know our place....in the study and out of the way of eastenders, waterloo road & X factor and also providing a taxi service FOC. However I still indulge in a few discs.
  12. credit was available to people who couldn't afford it. I blame the media and dot com. If you can't pay cash don't buy it.
  13. Drop the spam and add musturd and you will have a meal for kings....and possibly a bucket of red
  14. With the mess we've made of the economy, it's hard to see any bullion price returning to those levels in our lifetime. My daily commute was 180 miles so bugger the poor and have nots On the subject of the economic mess, I was reading that a million $ packed really tightly into a brick of $100 notes would rise approximately four and a half inches off the table in front of you. Want to guess how high the repayment we and our children have to make would rise off the table in front of you ? I'll tell you. 71 miles.
  15. We sold out when in 67. We had 240 pennies to the pound all with Brittania. I remember searching through thousands of coins and coming up trumps. My collection of pennies aveage GEF from about 1880...all from circulation Mum and Dads card tin did that although great help was also greatly received from friends and relitives.
  16. Wrong if I team it up with roasted monkey nuts, qualty malt and another bucket of red.
  17. I shall have lobster, scallop's and mash with a bucket of good red.
  18. I do prefer quality fish and chips or even a good chinkie(and not to mention an Indian)....Luckily I eat salad and have to run around in the shower to get wet.
  19. Actually my cardigan is flavoured with Madras and Greene King IPA so I look forward to it. Not so sure about the slippers and wife's vest. See me on Petermunchingwool.com
  20. However I try I can't float my boat with anything after....well it has to be predecimal when you got 480 halfpennies for £1. In my youth I used a lot of these in 2p arcade machines. I've still got rolls of halfpennies. Maybe I have copper tinted glasses but really pre 1936 gets me going everytime.
  21. It makes you wonder what the £ could buy.My parents bought their house for £2,000.00 in the early 60's.So a gold coin was worth approx £2,000.00 in todays currency. My memories of coins go back to the early 70's when you could buy them for £5 to £6 although my pocket money didn't stretch. I do remember buying an Unc 1901 farthing for 10p and a GVF 1/2d for 20p....the rest came from change as my uncle was a baker/milkman and my father had access to a till which I used to search every Saturday morning.I amassed a good collection of pre 47 silver although no pre 20 silver. In the last 30 years I have bought willy nilly but recently calmed down to buying only quality....unless auction fever strikes on a bit of quality. Anyone remember the "Farthing Specialist"? he was an inspiration as he actually took time to write a note with every order and often put a few extras in the package. Maybe life was simpler then.
  22. When I was a teenager my sister bought me a 1914 shilling which I still have today probably gvf but will never be replaced. My parents have given me money for birthdays and Xmas which I have used for coins and not depreciated as fast as M&S jumpers.I also spend far too much time on internet forums (and Ebay et all)and have managed to bore my wife and children about my coins...although my eldest is taking an unhealthy interest in their values/and probate laws.
  23. A fine year 1874 I wish great grand ma had saved the selection of coins each year in BU and maybe cherry picked a few of the earlier coins.I wonder what was circulating in 1874? I have made hashed attempts to collect decimals but they do nothing for me.
  24. Hi Rachel If you got a fiver for your coin I would eat my cardigan and slippers and possibly my wife's vest. Coins really have to be in top condition....I have so many friends who produce worn bun pennies who expect them to be worth a fortune. Have a look on Ebay to see what they fetch.
  25. 1882 seems to be a collectible year for most coins....I wish my great grandma was born then and stashed a huge collection in the loft.In fact she was born in 1874 which makes me feel a bit old....still in my fourties.
