I've been a paying collector since the age of 14 ish (farthing specialist & a few other names)....I'm now in my 40,s...but where is my hobby going . I collect for pleasure foremost. I grin but grimmace when i see a vf cupro nickel coin go for .99p plus £1.99 postage...I'm sick to the stomach when I miss a variety 1/4d over a few £'s. Hammerered are completly crazy...buy from detectoristists with poor cameras....I can see the archeologists view when you get complete twats with no appreciation for history selling on ebay...but is the whole cycle something we must get used to. My main point is that I have just received a list from a respected dealer who I have purchased off in the past and his prices are....Whoooosh. I just file it away.....obviously Ebay sets standards but blimey.

With hammered I no longer buy blind so its Ebay or Coin fairs ( & a few online dealers.) I have got a few beauties off Ebay (spot the detectorist with a poor camera) for peanuts. Ebay is home to a lot of new material to the market so it can't be ignored.

Try Wildwinds.com for information and some good links. Take heed of modern forgeries being turned out in nrs especially in Eastern Europe. I'll leave you to study the forgoing and you should pick up an excellent site to buy from.

It looks like a Jetton (probably French) from the middle ages. These were used as counters and have little value.

Try soapy cotton buds and softened (soaked) cocktail sticks. The old rocking horse isn't rare so go for it.

I don't think the mintage figures are defined. I do however believe the young head is overvalued in the catalogues and has become "rare" following the key date collecting frenzy of the 60's and early 70's. Examples are fairly common.

You won't get a 1912 kn...only 1918 or 1919. All these are Birmingham mints.

It was probably a 3d or a 6d...(it could even have been a Maundy coin.....1d,2d,3d or 4d which were all silver). Towards the latter part of the 19 C there were several different "Victoria" heads. (Young head,jubilee,veiled). I hope this helps a bit...good luck.

I find wildwinds.com an excellent site to ID Romans. If you have an idea what the coin is its quite easy to find a match to attribute the Sear,RIC or Cohen listing.

If they are circulated just pence...then you have to find a buyer. I've got a few thousand in the attic which I just can't bring myself to throw away. You didn't hear this from me but they work in the 2p "cash falls" machines in amusement arcades.
