    European Lookalikes

You're welcome here Art...looks like you've caught the UK bug...I've certainly caught the US bug. (Initially I'm trying to get an example of all denominations and types....plenty of scope there ) Its great to have another fountain of knowledge at hand. Peter
  4. Authentic 17C Bling. I'm sure in years to come collectors will treat the current "Sovereign ring brigade" with the same contempt. PS What is the rarest coin you've seen mutilated? Colin Cooke once told me a complete Victorian series of UNC farthings had been inherited by a "handyman" who promptly polished them and then screwed each one onto a display board.
  5. I would try swapping the 6 and 9 around first. Read your book, look at coins,by all means on Ebay but I would suggest you buy a selection from a reputable dealer(this site ). Then maybe you can see what interests you and concentrate on these. Good luck and happy hunting.
  6. Varieties are still being identified...and have yet to be written on....Its all part of the attraction of coins. With the advent of digital photograpy, the internet and pooling of knowledge our Hobby will only develop. Get left back in the 70's at your peril.
  7. I use all reference books when tasked with something.Chris's Rotograhic was a real bonus this year (previous copies were 15+ years old and in the loft.) although my 2005 copy is falling to bits. Without doubt I would recommend a 2004 + Spink(Victorian bun pennies detailed). I also use Coin Yearbook as a quick reference for milled (it goes back a bit further than Chris's). It is also cheap...(useless for hammered). Krause catalogues I'm afraid are library jobs. Lets hope there are a couple more books out there..I'm sure they are Chris ???????????

    Cheap hammered?

By the way guys..let me know the outcome of your "hammered hunt". Caution though as there is no known cure for hammereditis I also hope you are aware that you should only handle hammered wearing masks and gloves (Because of the plague)

    Cheap hammered?

I haven't got any Ed 111 milled farthings....Only a play on words JMD. Come on you Tories
  10. The largest silver coin looks like it could be an Edward 111 halfgroat...the other silver is just too worn to make a meaningful ID I'm not sure of the golden coloured one...its almost button like. Basically stuff to steer clear of.

    Cheap hammered?

Also try Gilliscoins.com There are a few to tempt you. Andy's coins are top notch...great to deal with aswell.

Is anyone else having trouble logging on? Last night I couldn't...today at work no probs...but no luck again tonight.

    Cheap hammered?

Nice coins. At least with silver 1ds a bit of battering doesn't detract too much. Hammered isn't for the perfectionist.....How would our Yankee buddies try and grade these Imagine one of these beauties engulfed in a blob of plastic..YUK

    Cheap hammered?

Bury mint is difficult in good grades...I should know...my local mint...anything nice is expensive.(especially moneyer Robert de Hadelie) Pardon the pun but there are nice pair of Bristols on Colincooke.com priced at £25 & £30. London/Canterbury mint of similar condition should/would retail at less than £20.....I believe a bargain really.

    Cheap hammered?

Edward 1 pennies are plentiful...as are 11,111 really. You won't stop there though. For £10 on Ebay you should get something niceish. Look for an unclipped coin with a good portrait. Try Dei Gratia (Dave and Gary)....they deal mainly with hammered,Roman (detectorist based) Everything is identified...this will help initially. Hammered is a science in its own right. Larger coins you will pay big premiums especially with good portraits etc. S2482 is a nice attractive budget (plentiful) coin.(Edward V1 shilling fine silver issue) but a nice one will cost £150+ Less than £40 you will have to stick with pennies or a borderline halfgroat. Another option could be Charles 11 shillings but clear details on nice unclipped flans fetch high premiums....good luck.

    1877 Crown lol

Guys Be prepared... Check out Ebay item 3971999725 (it finishes tomorrow). A finer example will not be found....thank you Mr Yinhezhubao. Fingers twitching over the confirm button?
  17. I suggest you buy a coin book on UK coins....there are plenty for sale on this site.(starting at less than a fiver) You will waste you're money without basic knowledge of the subject. The top left is a three half pence for Colonial use. Then you have a twopence/maundy coin. the half farthing is the most common date of its type plus it looks like it belonged to Jack the Ripper at sometime. A fiver maybe a fair price but buying stuff at random without knowledge isn't very smart.

    Evil Gypsies

It could easily have been 2 scousers, geordies,East Anglian Farm workers.....Gypsies are getting bad press albeit some of it deserving and are an easy target for the stirring of racial hatred. The guys who commited the crime ?????should be locked away for good....rest assured 99.999% of Gypsy folk wouldn't hide these ghouls. In my younger days the pub I frequented (most nights) was visited occasionally by about 20 gypsies. Me and a couple of mates stood our ground on the pool table/dart board facilities. To cut a long story short after a while the crack was fierce....a really nice bunch of lads....never a hint of trouble. They would self regulate..if one of them started getting a bit rowdy the rest nipped it in the bud. But people from Norfolk...well thats another matter.
  19. There is nothing wrong with paranumismatics ! The gaming tokens are collectable in their own right. I've picked up a few along the way...obviously people treat them with contempt because they feel they mimic valuable guineas. The imitation guineas were produced as throw away souvenirs for theatres and music halls,as gaming counters and for advertising purposes. They were produced in numbers from about 1860 onwards and were never considered as counterfits.

    1819 crown

I would imagine you would have to pay a little bit more...they sell quite well on Ebay. It is a nice lump of silver and reverse isn't bad.
  21. It's going to be a Labour landslide again...I just hope people vote tactically to reduce their majority.
  22. Peter

    i was wondering

That would be the price you would pay from a dealer.....not many dealers would bother though...to sell maybe 40/50%. So...... Start a collection
  23. $7/8 per oz = £3/4...a good time to buy....possibly?

    I'm getting a new PC

Thanks for clearing it up about school registers....I had a vision of some old lady taking the dinner money in a modern cash till How much do these unreliable Brom com thingies cost? What is/was the matter with a nice bound A4 pad?.....no wonder our council Tax is so high....and we're probably employing more police to investigate register thefts

    Supprising values

I've recently obtained a few old coin monthlys from 1971 & 81...they make a good read. Something I've been meaning to do is collect interesting articles and file away so I end up with a concise reference folder. Just out of interest I'll list a few coins in typical adverts...prepare to raise eyebrows. 1971 Dec 1820 5/- nvf £4.50 1889 5/- BU £15 1960 5/- UNC £3.25 (polished die ££5.50) 1940 3d silver BU £4 1940 3d brass BU £4 1908 FDC MAUNDY set £11 Sovereigns 20C £4 TO £7 each The prices then reflected the Key date hunting (over decimalisation)...there were coin fairs all over the country...hundreds of coin dealers/adverts. By 1981 dealers were offering £65 for Unc Sovs...key dates had hardly moved. I'll let you all know in about 6 months what I decided to buy
