Henry II Tealby Cut Half Penny.
Peter replied to a topic in British Coin Related Discussions & Enquiries
Coins were being clipped...one way to counter this was to introduce a longcross on the reverse rather than the smaller central cross. This happened midway thru Henry 111's reign.(1247). The longcross gave a ready made template to cut a coin into halves or quarters. I've read somewhere it was common practice to put coins in a hessian bag and shake vigorously to extract small particles of silver. -
A few years back whilst working in East London the elderly lady cleaners used to sell them (about 40p each). (Together with Baccy, fags and cheap spirits.) I can remember getting a few in my change during this period. I put them in my money tray at home which was then raided my the Missus and spent obliviously at M&S. Personally I would be more worried about buying forgeries of collectable coins. I'm still looking for a decent 1775 1/2d (although forgeries from this period are now collectable in their own right). I've got a few. I was aware of rumours surrounding forged 1905 2/6's...has anyone come accross these....now there is an idea...knock em out for 40p each.

Personally I wish all these forgers were sent to the Tower. However they are doing nothing illegal....However if they were to display at a fair I would be happy to knocking over the table or try to buy a coin with counterfit money. I would suggest a hammered forgery wouldn't be too difficut.

Stunners on eBay.
Peter replied to Chris Perkins's topic in British Coin Related Discussions & Enquiries
Gee...I haven't gotten me a nice 12 Cent....I might have a snipe tonight. The 2/6 has a way to go.....there are some big lumpers in there who want it and I can't say I blame them. If only money was no object I chuckled at Mr persistant on your gold. You can work out the hours spent bidding in small increments .....a very patient person. -

Nice coins.....but..... the 1820 shilling a first strike....how do you work that out Could be a late strike with a new die Don't turn American on us.....there is a thread on first strikes on another popular coin forum. They will end up with premiums for alledged MS70 first strikes!!!!!!!! Nice coin though.....must be the first strike after the striking machines seals were replaced. .....Choice UNC though. -

Tubandpud A picture is being painted I can imagine a "large" friendly hairy biker. There is nothing wrong with fizzies...they led me on to RD's and scratching my exhaust pipes on sweeping bends. I've asked Mrs.Peter if I can have a bike again (its been over 20 years) but there is always a good reason why I can't. As for Naturism...you could always keep your Helmet on.......a bumble bee at 60mph....now that would hurt. -

Saltford Coins Web site Now Live!
Peter replied to saltford_coins's topic in British Coin Related Discussions & Enquiries
Excellent new site. Hopefully you will picture all coins....Buying blind has often held me back. I'm counting back and remembering coins I've bought from you previously. Are you going to continue with lists ? Will you be adding new stock at set times? Too many questions ...I'll let you settle in. -
I got caught on a speed camera!
Peter replied to Chris Perkins's topic in Nothing whatsoever to do with coins area!
The project I'm currently working on has 4 cameras. There is only film in one and that changes!!!!!! When they were first installed it was like a disco....they certainly improved the traffic flow and helped safety. -

apolologies I was thinking how Duggleby sets out his numbering system. I prefer Rotographic....good price too.
-
The Duggleby reference with the RB reference (where possible)....rather than a look up at the back. (I know it is competion)!!! It is very difficult (or I find it difficult) to quickly identify notes and as much information as possible in one place would assist. I've noticed obvious Ebay dealers making identification errors.... What about spiral bound and sorted in denominations or is that all a bit too radical. Keep it portable for coin note fairs though!!!!

Double Birthdays today!
Peter replied to Chris Perkins's topic in Nothing whatsoever to do with coins area!
I bought myself a Fizzy (Yamaha Sports moped) on my 16th.....with the proceeds of pumping petrol. ...it took a lot of my spare time. I remember it as if it was yesterday. The other bit came with the purchase of a Morris Marina 1.8 super coupe delux(late 70's babe magnet approx 1 year later.) Have a great day Oli. -
The 1897 coin you describe...is it similar to Ebay item 3964392235 ? I think these were massed produced in various metals. You're cartwheel could be a 2d you can check it for size in most coin books(I think the 2d is 40mm) It would need to be in excellent condition to be worth anything (Chris the owner of this site has a couple for sale with pictures). Only 198 coins to go.

What did you pay for the Pheon? However, they are nicely sized for to pop in his swag bag. I've got a couple of rose farthings etc which I store with my Hammered in 2X2 flips which fit 20 to a page..in coin albums .You need to staple the flips well because hammered are so thin.
