I have this coin in VF+. When sweeping through Krause a while back I noticed it was quite rare ($125+ and probably a key date.) It does nothing for me. Any Danish collectors out there who can tell me why it is so rare...the mintage figures are not the lowest of the series?

1848-1859 Farthings
Peter replied to Master Jmd's topic in British Coin Related Discussions & Enquiries
Nice bit of work JMD. What reference books are you using? It looks like I need to put a bit of work in on my 1856's & the choice of 1864 proofs on Ebay is limited to say the least. -
Coins Stolen in Robbery - Surrey, UK
Peter replied to Andy Bruce's topic in British Coin Related Discussions & Enquiries
and no doubt the crook is polishing the coins with Brasso to sell on ........the James tin 1/2d please noooooooo. Surely this lot are traceable....and we've all got digital copies of our coins...haven't we ? -
There are bargains on Ebay as well as VASTLY overpriced/bidded up TAT. Ignore descriptions always view the coin yourself...both sides....I've been caught out....Grrrrr.....there are plenty of fools out there(including me) Don't go on Ebay with the intention to buy....start using a few dealers....read up on your interests.....and just enjoy.

How bigs yours? - Collection that is!
Peter replied to Millimoo's topic in British Coin Related Discussions & Enquiries
I would get into my time machine (with the William and Mary 6d)....and use it to buy a Ye Olde Pint from the village Inn. I would insist all the change was in farthings...I reckon 23 of them ......imagine a bar job in those days? They didn't realise how lucky they were. -

I would like to like gold!! Its a beautiful tarnish free metal. I've just got a 1910 1/2 sovereign and a 1787 1/2 guinea. A plan is to go big time on a Hammered Gold...I was watching a James 1 Laurel the other day and the bid finger started to twitch. I think I will play safe though and buy through a dealer take my time/research and enjoy the experience!!!!! The sight of some dealers tables at coin fairs springs to mind. Still.... if a Anne 1/4d was winking at me amongst the gold.....I would have a big time problem. -
How bigs yours? - Collection that is!
Peter replied to Millimoo's topic in British Coin Related Discussions & Enquiries
My collection is massive....together with trays, albums accessories and books I'm gradually taking over a large part of the dining room. Over the years people have given me various different coins and I have added to these ie Victorian crowns and double florins but deep down I'm a copper man. I still remember the thrill of relations saving their victorian change for me. I never refused any and I must confess a lot of Vikkie pennies in less than fine were spent at the local sweet shop. -
JMD is correct. Freeman or Peck don't list any...I've just checked.

Spink - Coins of England
Peter replied to Millimoo's topic in British Coin Related Discussions & Enquiries
Save your money on Spink All the books have merits and drawbacks (I havent seen the stanley gibbons effort though....although I hear!!!!!) I do tend to use them all....at some time. Collectors coins,Coin yearbook, coincrafts catalogue. As a rough guide I update Spink every 5 years,Coin yearbook every 3....coincraft...I'm waiting for the new edition? Collectors guide...probably yearly as it looks like its moving in the right direction with additional useful information...only covers back to 1797 though. They are all just pricing catalogues really. Books out of print are also worthwhile. English Silver Coinage (esc) for Silver fans Freeman for Bronze fans. Other books you really need to be dedicated like Peck etc...(I am) -
Now there's a turn up
Peter replied to Chris Perkins's topic in British Coin Related Discussions & Enquiries
I'll nominate JMD. Although it would surely be easier today than in Pecks time.....probably only take 5 years instead of 10. & what price the finished artical????? -
Now there's a turn up
Peter replied to Chris Perkins's topic in British Coin Related Discussions & Enquiries
Fantastic and makes my heart leap...a definitive list...however the fact there are so many varieties & UNKNOWNS make coins an enthralling study. I've got my Peck,a copy of Freemans,a recently aquired Montagu & a good selection of Colin Cookes catalogues and still I reckon I've got (possibly) unlisted varieties of farthings. Peck indicated the nr of different dies (+5 etc) but a definitive list is required WITH photographs. Each denomination could do with a separate volume though!!!!!!! -
F J Jeffery & son ltd have a copy of the ESC 1974 edition on their January list.(its the red cover edition that I've got) I don't know the condition but its priced at £3.50 + £1.00 P & P....looks like a bargain. Good Luck

My latest ebay listings
Peter replied to Chris Perkins's topic in British Coin Related Discussions & Enquiries
No problems with Ebay experienced ..... but just be careful. I get plenty of spoof Emails but I just forward them onto Ebay. A few selected dealers have my credit card details so I can order with ease but like with everything else I,m careful. You can even put a spending limit on a credit card....you needn't accept their £100K credit limit. Its like the stories you hear from people who work in top restaurants but would never eat there. There are a lot of rouges on the net but they are quite easy to spot....just use common sense. -
The 1881H Farthing varieties.
Peter replied to Chris Perkins's topic in British Coin Related Discussions & Enquiries
Chris to add to 1881 1/4d varieties....info from Colin Cooke and listed in my own catalogue/record of 1/4d's Type A;H virtually in contact with the 1st H. Type B;H slightly nearer 1st 8,H clear of linear circle. Type C;H centrally placed between 88 above linear circle. Type D;H centrally placed but lower near linear circle. Type E;H centrally placed but lower than type B near linear circle. Type F;H slightly double struck. Type G;H stongly double struck. I reckon Collectors Coins Great Britain will one day be 250 pages thick. -
I can narrow it down to William 111,Anne or George 1,11 or 111. A complete reasoned guess would be G 111.
-
Charles Wilson Peck won the British Numismatic Society (Sandford Saltus Gold Medal) posthumously in 1968..... So .... if you do Mr Peck first....I will sort then sort the other experts !!!!!!! Proper Ghost writing. PS I have just noticed !!!!..... I think the 1838: farthing is rarer than the 1838. if you know what I mean.....well it certainly cost me more. (your 2005 Rotographic book)
-
Chris No problem....please forward or post all (by return) all the new findings and we,ve got a goer. Although I can't promise you a timescale.

Great book...I think I saw it ....Blue 1992 edition? I've got the Red 1974 edition also stumbled accross on Ebay & a similar price.....very lucky indeed. It would be fantastic if some of the old reference books were put back into print....my wife treated me to (£125) of Peck last year (eventually from Spinks) she was sick and tired of me dragging her and the kids into every 2nd hand bookshop in an ever increasing radius. I think there are enough pricing books on the market and something a bit deeper would be nice for the serious collector. I eagerly await a certain Mr Cooke's "mentioned" Farthing Encyclopedia.....

Now I really have seen it all. Ebay today a 1970 proof 1d went for £16.65 PLUS P & P ref 3948866747 & one of the 1970 ? proof 1/- for £10.51 PLUS postage. ref 3948868753 Better go and dust down my set of 8 coins !!!!! & get them on there quickly.

Christmas & New Year.
Peter replied to tubandpud's topic in Nothing whatsoever to do with coins area!
Off to the Village Hall now.....families only.....however there is a beer surplus which needs seeing to I prefer the old days of 10 deep in smokie pubs...NOT. Happy New Year everyone. -
Why can't we all just send you cash....then we would all know exactly how much you are ripping us off for.

Hi Just been cruising Ebay and I may just have found a 1d bargain on the Australian site for any of you Penny collectors. Its an 1827 1d (the majority of this mintage exported to our early open prison (called Australia) Its buy it now for AU $150 which is going to cost just under £70 inc P & P. The scan is a bit dodgy but the coin doesn't look too bad...Don't blame me. I'm sorely tempted but will stick to my 1/4ds and 18 century 1/2ds....(Pennies Pre 1895 seem too difficult) Oh...the Nr IS 3948074929 & bidding finishes (UK time) early Wednesday (it is currently at AU $90)

I've got about 10 coins in my " Shove Ha'penny" set which was inherited from my Grandfather 30 years ago....One is a bun Victoria (a 1871 no doubt) where the reverses have been polished flat. The rest are Eddies and George 5th's. Usefull for the game......What does nark me however are all these idiots who have cleaned, drilled, defaced, made jewellery, enamelled coins.....over the years.......ancestors of the present Chav/Bling boys!!!!!!!!!
