    Coin Camera With Database

For £40 odd looks worth a punt. The stamp pictures look good.(I have my fathers collection that could do with a bit of attention) I also have my own banknote and cheque collections. Maybe a bit of experimentation on the coin lighting though. What is the problem with 3MB?
  2. Is that just a weak strike? Or is it a nice coin that has had a lot of wear?
  3. Before Wiki we had little.(before internet really) My mother was a Librarian and the family home had a full set of Britannica which was cutting edge. Now my mother gets me to look up loads of info on the internet for her competitions/quizes.
  4. Got my North 1 from the Midland Fair. Immaculate & £10

    Ebay's Worst Offerings

What is this absolute madness? (I've got 3 comming) http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Brand-New-Uncirculated-and-Sealed-UK-Legal-Tender-Solid-Silver-20-00-Coin-/221303953392?pt=UK_Coins_OtherBritish_RL&hash=item3386be57f0
  6. I see Rob has been rummaging through the £1 tin again. The 2F York 2/6 is magnificent.
  7. A couple of vendors pictures. http://www.omnicoin.com/viewcoin/973636 (good old copper ) and one through the slab http://www.omnicoin.com/viewcoin/975916 This is how I expect 120 year old silver to tone.

    Toning ... Again

Ah So we have 3 subscribers to Readers Wives. When I went to Australia I got recognised......because I'm pretty big down under. Pictures of myself and my coins I will keep to myself

    Toning ... Again

I take due diligence of NT The eye appeal of a coin is very important to me. A carbon spotted BU will always play 2nd fiddle to a nice chocolate EF. With silver over 100 years old a nice steel grey is preferred.Although a edge toned coin is also OK. Never some fairground, rainbow toned freak. The Yanks can stuff their Dansco albums with these.

    Toning ... Again

Can't help it, although it does get my heckles up big time. I was just reading some Coin News articles about toning and AT from a few years ago, and they stress that one of the main motivations behind AT (apart from inflating the price) is to hide imperfections ... something to bear in mind! The toning IMO is an imperfection.

    Ebay's Worst Offerings

The lady who I advised had a replica 1562 "coin" messaged me tonight calling me a nasty person and she might report me to ebay for abuse. I had merely pointed her to the direction of 2 more replicas after my initial message. She also said she had 7 children and was selling it for a friend. Brain of Britain? I don't think so.

    Ebay's Worst Offerings

I've been watching this for entertainment purposes. I've just emailed the seller and told him it is a retail £3 coin. http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/290953441637?ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1438.l2649 There is also a pewter 1562 6d for sale although I've referred her to 3 identical replica coins.

    Toning ... Again

AT is firmly embedded in the US collecting scene. As is TPG,modern strikes and the like. Long may it always stay over there. Maybe the love of toning reflects their lust for neon lights and everything generally gaudy.
  15. That crown surely sums up this thread. The historical auction catalogues are full of this type of crap....aren't they?

    An Interesting 1898 Penny

Try CDESTEVES'S sources for bulk buys. He is the treasure bag ebay seller. I gave the majority of my VH's to local schools and got rid of huge bags at a car boot (we did once). The ones I've got left I will check. This reminds me of the great surveys and variety write ups that coin monthly produced.
  17. I paid 20% on a James 1 1/- earlier this year. I believe revenue also have a time limit to claim back errors. Most major dealers/auction houses will correctly code the customs declaration. I wrote mine off to experience.(you lose £15 per £100) I've had several packages coins from the US with no customs/declaration.
  18. Thanks Neil I can't believe I hadn't noticed that before. I note that it came from the US in 1980...no earlier provenance?
  19. This is a 1850 farthing from one of our forum members site. http://www.aboutfarthings.co.uk/Farthing%20-%201850.html
  20. It must be a difficult task to put reasonable reserves on every coin when probably one is a jack of all trades. The best to expect would be to ID the S nr and use basic Spink pricing (ignoring rarity as Spink do)
  21. Hi Geoff What gems have you managed to pick up this year? I agree on your early copper comments.Even verdigris free eye appealing coins are hard to find. The internet bidding options are certainly driving the market up. The bargains are still out there,it is a case of being in the right place at the right time. I happily still play the waiting game for my wants. May I ask you how and where your 1718 1/4d came from? What did the vendor describe it as? Beautiful coin.
  22. If the weight is right GF is a meaningless grade. The coin is a beauty. I'm sure you paid over estimate but value/desirability ...you tell me. I'm sure yours would win a beauty contest over most. PS I also loved your recent Charlie.(A bargain and fantastic example)
  23. As he dips back into varieties.
