JaggyNI You can never have too many books. Rob didn't mention that you can buy albums which take plastic sheets that can house 2x2 flips. The flips can also be stored in long boxes. Keep the coins in a dry environment and save all those silica sachets.

Welcome Chris Why stick to one denomination? Buy what you like the look of in appearance and price. It will soon drop into place. Buy the best you can afford. I won't dis Coin Yearbook it is fairly cheap and may give a beginner a bit of advice. There is far more usefull advice available on this forum.A better pricing book which covers varieties and more useful info is Collectors Coins GB (about half the price as well) (Covers 1799-1967) The same publisher also sells Roman Bronze and Silver books which would serve a newbie well.

Thanks for the info cristatus, would in interested to hear your final thoughts, as I've got to be a little more organised now myself! My own simple folders with 1567, 1568, etc just ain't good enough any more!I still operate standard excel spreadsheets. One up from the well thumbed note books which still abound. In theory I keep spread sheets printed in my file which I amend manually as I buy/sell/improve ETC It still works for me.(Windows 95 I started?) If I do up grade I will run both systems.

Thanks for the heads up chaps. I've been trying the local auction house (general sale) but was dragged by my ear out of there by Mrs Peter as I was taking an interest in 30 ish large lots of fossils and rocks/crystals. The coins were TAT. They also do a Fine Art auction...can't wait.

Whilst discussing TPG's and varieties I understand that in the US not all TPG's recognise the same varieties. This is causing a nice little can of worms.

Coin 1 Overall EF unfortunate digs on George's neck. Coin 2 NEF Coin 3 A/UNC with a few stains which brings in down to EF plus a smidgen on value. Coin 4 NVF/GVF !!!! Coin 5 VF/GVF Coin 6 NEF The grades are anticipated CGS opinions Most dealers would add half a grade to these and in normal size they would look fantastic. Nice coins as usual Paulus.

Farthings from 1799 to 1956 are well covered in Collectors coins GB. This would be an excellent start.

ESC was way before Coincraft. Spink just dip their toes into varieties. It is only when you dig around a series that varieties appear. -

I reckon Stuart would pawn his boat for a decent rare Liz. The common type's are hard enough to get a defined obverse. -
Very nice but postage from the US

Need Some Help To Find This Coin. Its Weird
Peter replied to lece's topic in British Coin Related Discussions & Enquiries
It is a brass gaming token. The majority of these have strange inscriptions, dates, monarchs. They we produced in vast quantities in Victorian times. So many people think they have found a guinea. A gold guinea will weigh approx 8g whereas these brass tokens approx 3.5g. At coin fairs you can take your pick for less than £1 each although some suckers on Ebay pay more. -
Declan is no doubt gagging and drooling for his variety fix.
