Hi Guys, Having just recently read a very good book about the Brinks Mat gold bullion robbery. It got me thinking as to were the Royal Mint, gets their gold from, and is it possbile that some of this gold, might well have made its way into the Royal Mint? Has anyone got any thoughts or opinions? Look forward to hearing them.....

Hi Guys, Can anyone help me out with some information. In relation to the Gold Sovereigns minted in the Empire Mints. I know that the India mint used gold from South Africa and India. But can anyone tell me whether, the Canadian, Australian and South African Mints, used indigenous gold or imported gold to mint there sovereigns?

Hi Guys, I`ve heard a rumour that Air Crews, are now issued with Kruggerands, as apposed gold sovereigns. I`ve yet to have this confirmed, and if true I`m assuming that its the quarter ounce ones, and not a full kruggerand. Will try and confirm more details and let you know. Can anyone shine any light on this further?

Hi Guys, Can anyone explain to me why over the last 18 months or so, Gold Sov`s had doubled in price? I only started to collect them in 2004. I used to be able to pick them up for £54.00, now the same sovs are going for £84, and in some cases over £110!!!!!!!!! Why, surely gold hasn`t gone up that much has it? Gordon.

Hi Guys, I`m sure you`ll all aware of the current market, in Iraqi Dinar. I`d very much like to hear memebers views on whether they`ll turn out to be a good investment or not?

There have been loads of quality auctions on ebay, but one that I did find very interesting was a kilo of gold, which sold for a few hundred quid, the dealer was from China, and again the pages were stright out of the Chard website. I wonder if the buyer ever received his kilo of gold. I have my doubts!!!!!!

I recently picked up a copy of this book, thinking that it wuldo be a handy reference, as a beginner. On a whole it seems to cover just about every gold coin ever minted and is well worth getting hold of, however, one thing that I have noticed about it, is that it DOESN`T cover the Dutch Guilder? It has the Netherlands Antilles, and various other Dutch Colonies, but nothing about the home land. On page 899 according to the index is Holland, however, on this page if just gives the title Holland in bold print but then moves on to the East India Company. Behind Enemy Lines A number of gold sovereigns were issued to British Military Personnel taking part in Operation Granby as part of the Coalition Forces during the First Gulf War. Sovereigns provided by the Ministry of Defence and carried by serviceman who, it was thought, might find themselves isolated and in need of bargaining power if confronted by unfriendly forces. Several sovereigns were used during the war, mainly by RAF crews shot down over enemy territory, SAS soldiers also carried sovereigns, as part of their kit, for use whilst on patrol. But all the un captured coins were returned to the M.O.D at the conclusion of the conflict, having served their purpose. 16,289 pieces were returned during the war, by personal on completion of their missions behind enemy territory. Military personal carried twenty sovereigns each as part of their survival kit. The revived twenty-shilling gold sovereign became universally respected during the 19th centaury, thought out and beyond the British Empire. Accepted as readily in the Arab Souk as in the City of London, it was hailed as `the chief coin of the world`. During WW2 gold sovereigns were included in the survival kit of SOE agents. Mention of the coin in James Bond novels of Ian Flemming suggest that the sovereign also has its place in the world of espionage. In the Gulf War, British service personnel at risk of being stranded behind enemy lines were issued with twenty sovereigns a man to buy food, shelter and safe conduct. The Sovereign is struck in 22 carat gold and weighs 7.98 grams. It measures 22.05 mm in diameter. Yes it is very expensive. I got my copy on Ebay, for a lot cheaper than its listing price, so I can`t really complain. As I say my only negative thing about it, is the fact that the authors have over looked Holland for some reason? Other than that its a very useful book to have.

I`ve contacted the Royal Mint & Sotherby`s, and it transpires, that yes Gold Sovereigns were issued to such people as the Long Range Desert Group, SOE, RAF, etc. However, no Sovereings were minted during the war, and they certainly couldn`t have had any 1925 later issues. because they didn`t start minting them till 1949!!!!!!!! As the old saying goes in medal collecting circles "Buyer be ware", looks like the same could be said for coins!!! Interestingly the company selling these coins, under cross examination, buckled and said that maybe these coins weren`t the same ones used, so there advert in fact is false, as is the certifiactes they claimed to issue with the coins, which I also discovered weren`t from the Royal Mint at all, but made by the company that was selling them!!!!!!!!!! How can dealers get away with scams like this!!!! I wonder how many people have unwittingly bought these coins and I must add paid well over the odds for them!!!!!!!

The Royal Mi9nt and the Government secretly agreed to strike sovereigns for these agents and servicemen. All coins were dated 1925 with a special high rim to distinguish them from the normal issue.

Hi, Can anyone tell me the copper content for new gold sovereigns, as they seem a lot redder than earlier ones? I know GVR examples have 7%. I`m curious to know how much E11R examples have especially 2002 issues.
