Depends where you are. Most of us are in England. I never bothered altering my timezone the last time we changed the clocks so it'll soon be right again. Having said that though i am one of the early morning posters on here, not unusual to see some of my posts timed at half six in the morning. (the time reported will be 1 hour out though, so it might say 5.30 instead, which is the time when i'm just getting up).

Very British reply! I might actually have 2, one to write in, one to not use and keep on the shelf for future reference. My catalogues always fall apart in the end! -

I hate football and i hate beer even more. I more of a whisky drinker when i'm inclined towards alcohol, which is an extremely rare occurence.

Yes it is of interest, and i'm glad you solved that one! I had wondered if it was a copy, but i wasn't totally sure. I mean Scot in the legend was rather puzzelling as no real English penny of that period has it!

Don't buy any copper or base metal coins. If routing for silver go for the ones with a high silver content. Failing that gold is a much safer option where you'd not have to worry too much. Copper and iron coins are a no no.

There are many types of collectors; *Investors *Geniune Collectors *Grayscale collectors (they are genuine but they want a profit too) *Dealers (some have personal collections too) Those above are the main types, below is a list of minor type; *Date set collectors (these people cannot focus on one denomination and usually not on one reign but they like the idea of one of each from each reign). *Denomination collectors (these can be dull people, they get totally engrossed with one denomination, say half farthings, and to them all the others might as not exist, and they certainly know nothing about say halfcrowns). *Monarch collectors (these guys can be duller still or maybe not as dull? They pick a monarch and they collect everything of that monarch and no one else gwets a look in, but they do get plenty of denominations in there) *Monarch/denom collectors (these guys are really dull, or really specialist... they collect such things as William IV Half Sovereigns only). *Monarchs collectors (These are adventurous or mad and go for one of every monarch... i'll admit to being on of these!) *Date collectors (collect coins by date in sequence) *Type collectors (collect only major types forget trivialities such as dates) And that's just the tip of the iceberg, before we get to 'error' collector's, 'unusual coin' collectors and plain old hoarders that keep anything that's a metal disc, or even a non metal disc. *Collector by metal (I've looked into this, but how about on coin of every elemental metal, platinum, palladium, silver, copper, lead, iron, tin, gold etc.)

Yes disdain was the wrong word but when i was writing it the word i really wanted "indifferent" was not forthcoming, and i think disdain is a nice word so although semantically inaccurate it just had to be used! I like Geo. IV/Will IV coins very much. But it's not the art that does it. Eye appeal to me is the tone or the colour of the coin (bluish slate grey), and high relief perhaps with complex designs. As long as it look regal. As for hammered well it's history that made me into a coin collector and history remains my favourite of the two, so the idea of a coin minted around in say 1348/9 with the initial outbreak of the Black Death for instance; regardless of the appearance of the coin is what does it for me. Coins that have been there and seen it all.

Not as far as i am aware. I believe they were all in BU sets.

It would be the first time i've over budgeted on one coin and i've left myself short and thus had to sell another coin so that i can still get the train fare. Doesn't happen often but it has happened.

Not a case of too much money... just that i like to own expensive things. Not so much investing for profit but investing for my own pleasure and the coins hold their own monetary value. Also useful if i have to sell a coin to fund something i want one that's gonna sell, so i need quality and i want something with a retail value of at least £100 so that when i sell it i can just sell one rather than 20 coins.
-
I generally don't like spending under £20 for a coin. I like expensive...

What a question... How to answer, hmm that's a good one. For me it's history and like someone already stated i don't like all the coins looking too much alike where possible. Victoria is all good but it's too long. I like short brief and snappy reigns. 3 coins of one denomination for a full set of that monarch and you've done with them and you can brush them under the carpet. James II's reign is like a dream as is William and Mary's. I like Oli have this burning desire to collect something James II eventually. My main attraction is gold and silver, but tin will always get my attention and how. Tin's not everyone's favourite metal but i likes it! I'm practically the total opposite of Geoff. He like big, i like smaller/medium, he prefers the post 1816 period, i don't care for it. He feels nothing but disdain for early hammered, i thrive on the stuff. Stick me in a room full of Stephen pennies and i'm in heaven, totally. But medieval gold is what is really driving me on at the minute... hammered gold nothing like it.

Probably .doc No i'm just using Coincraft as a starting point, i'm going to add a few things/omit things etc. The layout is somewhat different already. Only problem is that it's hard to escape it looking like Coincraft/Spinks/Seaby or any other coin catalogue book you may think of because of course as you are aware they all look pretty much alike anyhow! At least when it comes to price listing they do. And they are the only real reference point when it comes to such 'trivialities' as edge lettering and overdates. Crowns/Halfcrowns are not an area i know very much about. But i do hear your plagerism comments very loud and clear, that is something i'm very keen to try and avoid. I've just got to figure out how it is best to present this, Coincraft not being my ideal model because i think improvements can be made on their model. I'm wondering whether missing out some of the minor varieties would be a good idea. I'll post you a copy of what i've got so far... it feels more like Collectors' Coins so far, but still a bit Coincrafty than i'm comfortable with. -

I'll email you a copy sometime tonight, i've got it started. The crowns are going down. No prices though. Perhaps we should get fellow members to get the prices for their denominations but i'll get the templates and stuff wrote up and email them to you. You have an acrobat writer so you can ammend them as required and shove in pictures etc. And layout the pages. I'm concentrating on drafting up the price listing pages thus far and as and when i get the time i might do some introductory pages with reference to the Roetiers and the Ochs' etc. Just going through the Coincraft and listing everything they've got down... it's gonna be tedious going through William III's halfpennies. Infact going through anything of William III's will be tedious cos there's just soo soo much of it! Provincial mints, 'errors' etc. Arrghhh! -

I'll have a look around Chris... Gotta get myself a new Spinks for prices and such. Give me a year or two, got studies on going that will have to take priority but i forsee no reason why i couldn't knock something decent up whilst i'm at it! Crowns-Farthings. Crowns and Halfcrowns should be interesting with all the varieties. Would you need some brief history with this? Or just prices? -

I think i may just fork out for a copy of CC 2005! I'm thinking about this early milled one, but which would be best? Consolidating the post 1816 coinage by having a gold coinage book? Or concentrating on milled non-gold coinage? I think we'll brush hammered under the carpet cos that is way too complex, unless you feel really adventurous? If you ever need a book on Stephen for any unknown reason in future i need to be involved! -
Well you're pretty much into the same areas as me then. The silver coins of that period are actually nicer than the gold ones. Let me make a suggestion to you, for a low budget but you want a decent set; The maundy stuff (1d to 4d) they are quite cheap compared to the other denominations. Sixpences 1674-1711 (quite a few dates are missing in that period). Shillings upwards are much more expensive and have many many more dates and varieties to get.
-
Ha William III eh? Now you are talking! Yes William III is within my period of interest, personally i'm on the sixpences but i'm interested in most other coins of his reign (minus the farthings and the halfpennies cos copper never did interest me). For old Bill i'd forget Ebay, you'll only find the junk on their anyway, particularly so with coins of the latter 17th century like William's. Any particular demonination that struck your fancy, or would you prefer to do a date set of say 1696 of all the denominations Gold down to copper? Would you prefer to concentrate on the provincial mints, the 'errors' like spelling mistakes and transposed shields? There is alot of material to work on for this reign, halfcrowns being the most popular. Would you also include William and Mary's coins?
