I think you are imagining things. The 8s on the early milled are usually asymmetrical. This one is slightly worse than usual, but in the absence of an identifiable under-character I suggest it is a badly formed 8.

Is the edge conventional?

Without a picture it could be anything. A 10p filed down to 5p size, a 10p struck on the wrong blank, toy money. What does it weigh? What metal is it struck in? Lots of unanswerable questions without a picture.

Thanks chaps,I couldn't summon the enthusiasm to look through the books.

Give me a clue please. That's all there is to go on.

how many auctions did the poor thing go in since then? 18

Ask for the proof of posting. That usually results in a lot of squirming by a guilty party. As I've said before to a seller, I'm not saying you haven't posted it, but without any evidence to the contrary I'm keeping all the options open. Remarkably the coin was returned within a week from the lost parcels depot in N. Ireland (instead of the usual 3 months) and forwarded to me. And I refused to let them off the hook by accepting a refund. I said I thought it worth waiting for a coin to appear given it was only costing 10-20% of market value. Especially as the seller had tried it on with someone else who I knew to be decent

The point is you can mark it as posted, but if you have genuinely sent it the PO will give a proof of posting. Otherwise it is one person's word against the other. If the seller can't prove it was posted, they haven't a leg to stand on. That is eBay's default position too. Buyer good, seller bad.

Depends on the person who has lost it for you. A lot of things don't arrive because they fail to make the expected/desired price. If the person selling has a history of losing items, call their bluff - it has worked for me in the past. In cases where there is no proof of posting, I did it by suggesting that they look a bit harder for the coin and in return, I won't leave feedback. As long as he has proof of posting, then it absolves him of being the reason it is lost. I've had things go missing in the post from a proper auctioneer where I've been paid out, but asked if I still wanted it when it was returned to them half a year later. So technically not my property any more, but it did no harm to ask me the question. There are no rules, though I suspect that it goes along the lines of insurance. i.e. the insurance company owns any recoveries.

The salvage from the Association was sold over 9 or 10 sales plus there was a lot of material that was sold elsewhere. You might be lucky to find it illustrated as the coin is one of the better ones. The Scottish unite might be illustrated, but if from a detector find is unlikely, unless recent.

Does Anybody Have A Moore Pattern Penny P2135?
Rob posted a topic in British Coin Related Discussions & Enquiries
Hi All. I'm looking for a decent image of a P2135 pattern penny to overlay on the piece below. When Shorthouse made a few restrikes of Moore's other patterns (cf. P2099-2134) in 1886, the die for the P2135 was missing. I think that the reason for this was the coin below which may have a trace of the original final A in GRATIA between the B & R of BRITT and almost certainly has used the same diademed bust punch. The coin in question is the one with this bust, but the legend is different. If anyone can supply a decent image of the normal coin it would be appreciated. Thanks. -
The whole date looks to be in a different font. https://www.google.co.uk/search?q=1822+crown&source=lnms&tbm=isch&sa=X&ei=iLBDU8WKG8Ld7QaxzID4Ag&ved=0CAcQ_AUoAg&biw=1920&bih=914#facrc=_&imgrc=WaXDXdcGBLhIRM%253A%3Bk9KcpLiKbKbaWM%3Bhttp%253A%252F%252Fwww.coins-of-the-uk.co.uk%252Fpics%252Fg4%252F5s%252F5s22s.jpg%3Bhttp%253A%252F%252Fwww.coins-of-the-uk.co.uk%252Fpics%252F5s.html%3B600%3B300

Yep, that's a dud. There are no George IV crowns with a milled edge, only with raised letters. The figure 2 is all wrong as well. You may also find the weight is only about 22-23g if it has been made from white metal.

England Frightened Of Scottish Indepemdence
Rob replied to azda's topic in Nothing whatsoever to do with coins area!
I like to think that the average Englishman doesn't give a tinkers dam either way, I know I don't. I was hoping that I could just sit on the sideline and throw in the occassional bone to see the fur fly. What has dissapointed me is how mild mannered this discussion has been. Probably because the benefits, perceived or otherwise, are irrelevant in the overall scheme of things. A bit like the Irish question. A unified Ireland would still be subservient to Brussels. The right to self-determine what exactly? Any right a country may have to set its own course and live or die by its decisions will be far outweighed by the potential for the governing bodies higher up the food chain to bu**er things up. Brussels will determine Scotland's future whether in the EU or outside it, just as it currently does. -
Yes, but it is appropriately from Clowne. So someone may have a sense of humour.

Whilst on the subject of coins with a dubious pedigree, earlier this week I was asked if I wanted a few odds and sods. In them was a not very good 1893 JH 6d, so I was naturally interested. However, my initial enthusiasm diminished when upon asking if there was anything else for sale, was told yes - these included a Northumberland shilling and a G3 crown. Images showed both to be copies, so I interpreted the 1893 6d as a copy that had been beaten up to make it look real. You couldn't tell if it was cast from the image, but the chances were high. Caveat emptor.

You could always ask Steve Lockett if their records agree. If they have pictures it would be better still.

All these arguments about independence for whatever country it is ignore the fact that all 'developed' societies live beyond their means. They got there by exploiting the under-developed nations. Eventually the wheels are going to come off the bus for everyone. There are too many people on the planet and we produce goods too efficiently for the status quo to be maintained. In the long term, earth will be ok - humans I'm not so sure about. -
Have you seen their audited accounts? If not I recommend you don't bid any higher as you could leave yourself exposed to unquantifiable liabilities. Caveat emptor, and all that.

hystorical, historical or hysterical? -
The description is somewhat more honest than the title.
