Uncertain half penny i.d help
Richard2 replied to Gaz T's topic in British Coin Related Discussions & Enquiries
What you have is an evasion halfpenny, like this -
I got these two 50p’s from the bank on different occasions last week and spotted the holes on Queenies chest. Looking more closely with a low powered microscope, they appear to be identical. They don’t look like a centre punch has been used ,but look more like they were done during the minting process. Has anyone else come across this or am I being too hopeful that it’s a genuine error

Good points all three of you, I’ll get me coat

Not a conclusion Rob just my initial thought. Probably is post mint damage , but why in exactly the same place. And I don’t think the other marks are jaw clamps as you suggest. Too small and not enough of them to be an effective clamp. What I might do is take a centre punch to another 50p and see if I can replicate the marks and the surface finish on the inside of the dents.

Didn’t realise that Rob ,thanks

I'm very interested in buying this Charles I unite ( not eBay), but first wanted your honest opinions on it. My only worry is the obverse side. Does it look ok? What are the lines running across it? What's it worth? many thanks Richard

Thanks again

That’s good to know about the die polishing, I haven’t seen that before. Does that happen on hammered silvers of the period. Thanks
-
Craigy, what did the hammered turn out to be?

ENGLISH-SCOTTISH-IRISH-GB GOLD...Show some of Your coins
Richard2 replied to 1934 Wreath Crown's topic in British Coin Related Discussions & Enquiries
One I'm very happy with as I found it myself metal detecting. I had to have it straightened by a jeweller as it was badly bent. few little scrapes on the reverse but I can live with that. Henry VI Half Noble, Annulet issue -
My mistake, £5700, well spotted Jerry

1797 Cartwheels 1 & 2 pence Grades please
Richard2 replied to fourmack's topic in British Coin Related Discussions & Enquiries
I would say the Penny has been buried ,as ive have found similar looking surface corrosion on cartwheels whilst metal detecting. -
I see this actual coin sold on ebay the other week for £7500
-
Your right Jerry, Spink 1025 is more like it,and higher priced. looks authentic to me ,but I'm no expert
-
Hi John , Ive only just seen your post but I can tell you ,you have Viking coin of Anlaf Sihtricsson 941-944AD. They were mainly struck at York. Did the topsoil come from that area ? I think I would buy a couple more tonnes and sieve through it or get a metal detector. priced in Spink at £1850 in fine and £7500 in VF, I think yours would be nearer vf for that type
