^^ In 2005 I thought it'd be quirky to get 10 of the Trafalgar £5 coins from the post office and then spend them in shops. To my surprise I was only turned away maybe once or twice. I did £20 worth of shopping at Morrissons, handed over 4 of the coins... the cashier didn't even bat an eyelid and took all 4. My local branch of HSBC exchanged a bag of 1977 Jubilee Crowns at 20p each, so I've no doubt they would also accept these £20 coins if need be. Back to the £20 coin. Rip off Merchents the 'London Coin Company' already have these up for sale on eBay for the disgusting price of £115 each. I wish the issue limit was greater than 3 so I could help out some of my foreign coin collecting friends in getting one.

ROYAL MINT COMPETITION..DESIGN BRITAINS NEW COINS!
eddyk posted a topic in British Coin Related Discussions & Enquiries
The Royal Mint has launched a competition for the public to design the next generation of British coins (for the tale side). ROYAL MINT INVITES MEMBERS OF THE PUBLIC TO MAKE THEIR MARK ON HISTORY Open competition launched to find new designs for United Kingdom coins An open competition to find designs for six of the United Kingdom’s eight circulating coins is launched today (Wednesday 17 August 2005) by the Royal Mint. Entries are expected to flood in as members of the public, and experienced artists alike, are invited to make their mark on history by coming up with the first new designs in forty years* for the reverse, or tail side, of the coins. With the exception of the 20p, which was first issued in 1982, the reverse designs of coins from 1p to 50p were chosen in the late 1960s at the time of decimalisation. While the current designs have served their purpose well, it is hoped that a new series may better reflect modern Britain. The design brief gives would-be designers a ‘free hand’ but as heraldry has been an important element in the design of British coins for centuries, entrants may want to look at interpreting heraldry in an ‘imaginative and creative way’ for a modern coinage. Alternatively, the brief suggests that they might like to consider themes to represent Britain, such as flora or fauna, geographic features, social, political or cultural achievements or British institutions. At a later stage members of the public will be consulted on the designs and will be given the opportunity to express their views prior to formal approval. Neither the £1 nor £2 coins are included in the competition; a new series of reverse designs for the £1 coin (featuring famous bridges from around the United Kingdom) was introduced last year, while the bi-colour £2 coin – and its design representing Britain’s industrial and technological evolution – was introduced as recently as 1998. Gerald Sheehan, Chief Executive of the Royal Mint, said the competition is an exciting way of making sure that the Mint has the widest possible input into new coin designs from as many people as possible. “Although we use coins everyday and we often take them and their designs for granted, it is fascinating how strongly people feel about the coinage and how integral it is to our history. “This is a wonderful opportunity for people to be involved in designing their own coinage and, for the winning designer, there could be a prize of up to £30,000. We are looking forward to seeing what ideas are submitted,†he added. Anyone interested in entering the competition should obtain an information and briefing pack from the Royal Mint: Telephone: 0845 60 88 111 Address: The Coin Design Competition Museum, Royal Mint, Llantrisant, Pontyclun, CF72 8YT Or via the website: www.royalmint.com The competition closing date is 14 November 2005. The designs are for the reverse of the coins – the tail side. The obverse (the head side of the coin) features a portrait of the Queen. The current designs for the 1p, 2p, 5p, 10p and 50p were by Christopher Ironside in preparation for decimalisation in 1971. The 50p has featured a number of other designs from time to time when it has been used to commemorate particular events, such as the 50th anniversary of athlete Roger Bannister’s four-minute mile. The 20p, which was introduced later, has a reverse design by William Gardner. For further media information, please contact: Jo Johnson/Noreen Bray Good Relations __________________ -

Westminster Colection only go as far back as last year. Royal mint go as far back as 2003 but only do them in gold. 24carat.co.uk is too expensive, and also not enough description. -

Commemorating the Royal Visit and Royal Coat of arms on one side. Our Beloved king and Queen and a picture of King George and Queen Mary stood side by side. Withought the oxidation damage I would grade this medal as VF to EF I would like added info on this coin, and if it is indeed worth anything. The medal was found in an old piggy bank in Norfolk if that helps at all. -

What Is this Coin?....Victoria 1888
eddyk replied to eddyk's topic in British Coin Related Discussions & Enquiries
I also posted it on a different coin site and now know its a half crown struck in .925 silver. So new question...how much is it worth in that condition? -
Yeah, I asked at a bank once if they had any rare or strange coins, and the teller said 'Those 1997 £2 coins are you looking for?' I couldnt believe it, millions and millions of the things were minted...out of every 10 £2 coins you get in your change 2-3 will be 1997 ones.

Buy them off Chris on here, i've bought a few coins off of him in the past and i've not been disappointed. I would buy more except i don't collect coins from the same period that Chris sells anymore! So i can't! What period does chris sell them? You see, I bought a coin off www.WestminsterCollection.com and they sent me it in a display case with 11 empty spaces...the craft gits. So i'm curretly filling that, Im buying only 1oz Silver coins at the moment, have 8 spaces left. I had a look on Yell.com for coin shops in lincolnshire, there are a few around. Me on ebay I always check the sellers feedback...If there is even 1 negative out of 1000 I probably wouldnt buy off him.
