    Silver Hammered Coins

    Link does not work correctly!
  3. yes I have recieved the email but the link did not work for me. I often recieve emails from Spink reference Auctions and I quite enjoy looking through the cats but I have not had problems with cookie policy pop-ups. You can block pop up from your browser settings.

    Why Are...

To be honest I have never come across a Victorian penny that is jet black and shiny. Some Farthings were blackened before leaving the Mint to avoid confusion with gold coins but to the best of my knowledge this process was not applied to Pennies. Do you have a pic? Some Dates do tend to tone darker than others the Old head series do darken considerably but not jet black. I think this has something to do with the alloy that the coins are made put off and the ratio of tin and zinc that was mixed with the copper to produce Bronze.
  5. similar "blobs" on the T of GRATIA and between T and O, I and A of VICTORIA. Two Die cracks one between V and I of Vic and the other just starting to show after Vic. A Die on its last legs perhaps although the hair detail is still very good.
  6. have you removed the bty and tried powering up just from the ac adaptor? Try plugging the ac adaptor in, do not attempt to switch on the laptop, and let it sit for a few hours. The bty capacity could be so low that the ac adaptor alone is not able to supply enough juice to run the laptop and charge the bty at the same time. Have you tried another bty? This could be defective and dragging the voltage down.
  7. Does anyone know what this is? It is supposedly made of blackened copper! 42mm in dia. and weighs 45g!
  8. EAR muffs? Oops no, I was thinking of Linda Lovelace... careful Peck, your showing your age there! Ohh, if I know that then I too am showing my age, doh!
  9. Oh, B'Jesus, they come in varieties and die-pairs?Edit: Oh, Gary, no, not you AND Peck?
  10. Thanks Gents, Same Obv. Badger Yes, it's a modern Mint-produced fantasy piece reproducing an actual obverse of Geo III and a pattern penny reverse closely resembling that in Peck 1084. However, I think it's one of the better ones, and the 'darkened proof' appearance is attractive. I got one from eBay for £10 which I considered was worth the outlay. I liked the look of it too Peck which is why I also bought one
  11. Hello all, would like a second opinion on the grade of this 1758 Shilling. Have looked at the dealer sites and I would place it around the VF mark. Just wanted an opinion from people more experienced in grading the coins before 1799. Thanks Gents.
  12. Nice Shilling Paulus, better than mine. As for the number of Harp strings being a Die indicator Coincraft do state that it is only a possibility that this is the reason for the varying number.
  13. Hi Paulus it suggests that the number of Harp strings were used for Die identification and that the number of strings varies through out the George II shilling series.
  14. a new grading term is born "a twitch" will go with VF. On another note I have just been comparing this new addition to another example I have and would now like to know if there are several dies for this year. I understand that the 1758 shilling was minted for several years following 1758. I am asking because I have noticed on the better coin that 2 hair curls are missing and the reverse Harp on one has 7 strings and the other 8. I only have the ESC and and there is no mention of Varieties for this date. Just answered the Harp String question myself should have looked at Coincraft Cat first, too hasty
  15. Thanks for the quick responses gents. Sorry Peck but this is one for my Collection and I think the price of £28.50 including postage was very reasonable. I really like it as it has nice even toning of the type that you would expect from a coin this old.
  16. Ditto, also impressed. I started buying coins from CC way back in the early eighties and was always pleased with the service and the coins. I must admit though I have not been a customer in recent years but I too would be interested in the PDF sales list and think its a great idea.
  17. I am not convinced that there are only two reverses for this date, cant say at the moment why but I am looking into it and will post if I come up with anything. I have posted a pic (not too brilliant!) which is from a 1897 HT penny which shows the date width being exactly 10 teeth!

    1875 Penny

Hi, you will really have to get hold of a copy of Micheal Freemans book "The Bronze Coinage of Great Britain" if you intend really getting into the bronze coinage. Have a look at this web site from Accumulator, I think you already know of it, http://www.mycoincollection.co.uk/page6.html also micheal Goubys site http://www.michael-coins.co.uk/GBpenny2.htm Regards, Gary
  19. and if you really want to dip into varieties of bun pennies 1860-1865 then try and get a copy of John Jerrams......
  20. HI Colin have had a look at my Farthings and have come up with the following, see below. The 1843 may be of interest as the coin exhibits all the characteristics of Rev A except the plume does not reach the shoulder. Viewed with a x10 glass it does not seem to be because of a worn Die! Plus an 1839 with Die Flaw along arm. 1839 Rev A EF 4,7g 2 Prong FID.DEF GRATIA both A`s barred arm Die flaw 1843 Rev ? gVF arm Die flaw and Trident joins thigh, Plume complete, straight Mouth but plume finishes short of shoulder ps Good work
  21. not a problem, I don't have any
  22. No Rob it is not silver plated and please don't ask how I found that out! Dave said that these were struck using a lower grade of silver than sterling which could mean that a small amount of copper or bronze was mixed with the silver which would account for the green spots but I can find no mention of this in any publications. Does anyone have any info on the metal composition for this series?
  23. I recently acquired my first 18 Pence Bank token but I am having problems with it! This is the first time I have had one of these in my hand and it just does not seem right. The colour is that of white metal The weight is 7.33g which is about right. 26.89mm in Diameter. 1.71mm Thick. Are there recent forgeries of these and how can they be recognised? I have ringed a few notable features that I have noticed, just in front of the eye there is an elongated protrusion. On the bottom of the bust is a raised Dot. Also the hair detail seems to be different to other pics that I have seen. On the Rev just below the 2 there is a raised Dot and in the field below the N is a tiny raised Dot. Anyone?
