    1862 1/2D 2 over 2

    I've have the 2/1 PENNY, but I never heard of a 2/1 HALF-penny....

    1862 1/2D 2 over 2

Not sure, but as you say, there is a definite slant on the "2". Apart from "Die letter A, B or C to left of lighthouse", classed as extremely rare, there are no variants of the 1862 halfpenny listed (that I can see anyway). It may be just a one off error. Interesting. Don't forget the newly discovered A to the RIGHT of the Lighthouse

New arrival, how rare are they

Here is a link to Michael Gouby's page on his website with information regarding the 1909 pennies... Link to Michael Gouby's information page on the 1909 pennies Please ALWAYS acknowledge source material. especially on the web, as people work hard to maintain it and they deserve the credit.......

New arrival, how rare are they

The F-169 (1909) IS listed in the 1970 edition of Freeman... The F-164A (1908) is NOT listed in the 1970 edition of Freeman.... As a point of interest the 1922 F-192A is NOT listed in the 1970 edition of Freeman either....

New arrival, how rare are they

The primary question with ANY of these "rare" varieties is not how many were minted, but rather, how many survived in an identifiable condition, so as to be of desirability to a collector....... Sometimes, the only numbers that we can base any calculations of rarity upon are the number of specimens that are known, and not estimated mintages.....

New arrival, how rare are they

I suspect Michael Goulby has 1 and the British Musium plus mine so we are up to the 6 now, must be some more out there. Gary, i don't suppose you have a spare 1908 164A tucked away somewhere I wish... I had a damaged specimen, which I sold when I got my current example......

New arrival, how rare are they

I have a specimen, sold a second one (in worse condition), and know of at least one other example... So that makes 3 of which I have firsthand knowledge.

is it or isn't it '1909 penny'

Perhaps it would be more correct to say that "Currently. the whereabouts of only about 10 specimens are known" or maybe even more correctly " Only about 10 specimens are currently accounted for"
  16. Bronze & Copper Collector

is it or isn't it '1909 penny'

He would be your best source of CURRENT information.... In fact, if I remember correctly, he contributed the current pricing data in the 2006 edition of Freeman's book...... On his website, he remarks that approximately 6 specimens are known of the F-169 and no mention of quantity known of the F-164A
  17. Bronze & Copper Collector

is it or isn't it '1909 penny'

R9 (in Freeman's scale) is 7001 to 12000 ESTIMATED..... In the case of the F-169 and the F-164A (an R5, estimated 50001 to 100000), I believe that there are LESS than a dozen KNOWN of each, possibly as few as 8-10, although there has NOT been a reliable census mage on these in many years if at all, and the only census referred to repeatedly is from John Jerrams book on Victorian pennies and their varieties from 1860 to 1865, which sadly, with new discoveries, is out of date.....

is it or isn't it '1909 penny'

Here's another example of what is probably an EXTREMELY RARE coin that is in EXTREMELY POOR condition, so much that the variety can be debated ad nauseum..... 1862 die letter A to the RIGHT (NOT Left) of the Lighthouse.....

    Ebay's Worst Offerings

I believe a lot of US collectors will pay 'Top dollar' for rainbow and otherwise toned coins. I remember a while back, a Churchill Crown with rainbow toning making $500 in a Goldberg (I think) auction. It was then offered for sale in an ebay shop in the US. for about $3000. I think the Curchill crown sold on teletrade for about $500+ and is STILL being listed on ebay for about $3000

    British encapsulated Coins

Hussolo fairly accurately summed it up in a brief and concise manner....... Always try to to stay with the major TPG's, but bear in mind that they are not always conversant with all the varieties and often enough mis-attribute them.... In any event, always buy the coin and not the plastic....
