Based on the image and with nothing contradictary, I would tend to agree that it is a 5/3.........

LOL!!! I just saw the date of your original post, and I suspect that YOURS was the coin on collectorsuniverse.... so possibly I only know of 2 definite specimens plus the other presumed examples......

That's good to know. When we last spoke on the subject of the 1911 varieties I beleive both you and I were still looking for the A+b. Now that we have both got the full set what is your opinion on the scarcity of the A+b as it does appear to be the hardest to find. Gary FOOLISHLY, I NEVER kept track of how many I checked nor what varieties they were..... If memory serves me well, I believe the most common (probably about equally), were the Aa & Bb combinations, followed by the Ba pairing...... I would estimate that out of 100+ 1911 specimens that I have either examined online or purchased, plus of course all those that you and Badger have examined, I only know of 3 distinctly clear specimens... Yours and Mine and one that someone posted on CollectorsUniverse (?) last year.... additionally there is another other poorish specimen and presumably the specimen that Michael Gouby used to verify the existance of the Ab pairing..... There MAY have been many struck but few survivors as they did not wear well, but this variety has, at least to date, been VERY ELUSIVE and DIFFICULT to find........

HI, Sorry, I've been offline a lot the past few weeks.... My friends daughter is in the hospital, and I've been spending a LOT of time there...... We're hoping for the best and are being very optimistic.... That being said, I only know of the 2 basic types of 1911 pennies..... The I to Gap and the I to Tooth..... I've owned 3 of them, this being my current specimen... The other 2 being a VF and a VG (US standard)... Although I would NOT consider it a RARE variety, it is certainly scarce, and it does command a premium.......

I'll sell him all that I have for 50p each.....

That's the lithographic reprint of the 1964 edition. I'm sure mine is the 1970...... I didn't realize that it was a reprint......... I'll have to check when I get home.... It's STILL a great reference.....

This is my 1854/3 Plain Trident. 4 over 3 in date. BMC 1505. Most purported 4/3 examples are spurious with the right and lower serifs joined to give an apparent curve of an underlying 3. The tell-tale evidence of a genuine 4 over 3 is the cross stroke of the top of the 3 which protrudes either side of the top of the angle of the 4.

The powers that be need to terms with the fact that the accepted references were compiled by field research and by documenting the results.... It is in no way absolute nor accepted to be complete.... new discoveries are made every day.... This is accepted by US collectors regarding US coins, so why should they have a closed mind regarding world coins..... although they do...... If not for the collectors with eager and eagle eyes, these new discoveries would not be made, so why not believe their own eyes.... I agree with your assessment that most people accept the authoritative reference works as the final authority, without accepting the fact that they might be incomplete insofar as discoveries made since (whatever book is involved) it was published..... Just look how many new varieties are now accepted since the last (1986 {the 2006 was essentially just a reprint} edition of Freeman..... Were their existence denied because Freeman did not document them??? Was the discovery, in a junk box, of a UNIQUE US 1870-S HALF DIME refuted because no one had ever seen one before??? Or because it was not in the Redbook (the OFFICIAL Guide Book of US Coins)???? Hussulo is correct..... Probably the best book encompassing ALL the bronze coinage is the Freeman opus....... Thank You Bob, I was just going to make note of that fact, and I see that you beat me too it...... Honestly though, I' not really sure that I see it....... It's a POOR specimen.... I would love to be proved incorrect. Indeed the fact that this almost certain 1672 has a very low 2 is interesting. Most 1676 (types) are 1675 with a broken 5. It's not 100% infallible - but after 1672 nearly all CII farthings have the last O of CAROLO between the hair ribbons. This does not. Colin Cooke did not believe in a 1676 farthing, the closest chance you could get would be a 1679 with a possible inverted 9. Mr Freeman has been proved wrong on new (Victorian) farthing dates before. I don't think that early farthings are his speciality. So a difference of opinion then! Teg HI Teg, Although I do collect farthings, they are not my specialty, but you do make some VERY valid and astute observations, and, as I tend to doubt that this is a 1676, I am inclined to give credence to your assessment of this coin......
