Silver sixpences of George VI
Russ777 replied to Russ777's topic in British Coin Related Discussions & Enquiries
Not quite. Before 1947 they are silver (50%). So both yours should be silver. There was no other metal used except silver alloy, even during the war. You may have a fake, but the best thing is if you could scan it and upload pictures of it for us to see? (To be half the thickness but the same weight, it would have to be lead I would have thought!) When I say half maybe an over guesstimation but certainly a great deal thinner will up load pics in a couple minutes! -

Silver worn coins can I sell as scrap?
Russ777 posted a topic in British Coin Related Discussions & Enquiries
Hi I sometimes purchase collections In amongst them I often get numbers of british silver 3ds in mediocre grades or with holes (used as jewellery?) My question is what is the current scrap value of a silver 3d in modern English money!! AmI able to sell on as scrap.. Also what about other silver coins??? I notice some people list hundreds os the things as scrap and get quite decent money Or am I better trying to sell each individual coin even if worn??? Thoughts please??? -

3 unidentified worn coins just interested
Russ777 replied to Russ777's topic in British Coin Related Discussions & Enquiries
The first coin is a Charles II 1672 farthing (or halfpenny). Can't tell from the size, but odds are its a farthing. The second is a late William III halfpenny, 1699-1701 - can't make out the date. The third is a counterfeit George III halfcrown, made in brass and then silver washed. Hope this helps. Thanks for your help. Any value whatsoever they are at least old coins? -

Unusual GB 1977 Jubilee crown
Russ777 posted a topic in British Coin Related Discussions & Enquiries
Hi was sorting out 100s of these I had when I came across an unusual one. It appears completely unplated or different colour? Is this just a case of a worn coin? All the rest have some degree of silver 'shininess'. What is the process on the coin. It is interesting even if it has been tampered with as you can see the detail of the original design in a different way. I even thought there was a number or something etched onto the 1st '1' numeral of 1977 but again I may be imagining things! The unusual one is the dull one (On right) next to an ordinary 1977 Jubilee crown. Worth having expertised or am I just plain crazy??? Russ777 -
Victorian pennies misalignment
Russ777 posted a topic in British Coin Related Discussions & Enquiries
Hi can Victorian pennies be misaligned from oneside to the other? I have a rather worn 1863 penny that appears to have the head tipped back at an angle when you flip over in relation to the other? I checked against another Victorian penny of 1889 and lined up the dated and the head does appear at quite a bit of an angle. I realise the coin is worn but surely the two sides should line up. Is there any premium to such a coin or are they common??? Thannks Russ -
Victorian pennies misalignment
Russ777 replied to Russ777's topic in British Coin Related Discussions & Enquiries
Hi I have just lined up the date line on the 'normal' 1889 and 1863 with the card and you can quite clearly see the tipping back on the 1863 one. Any premium commanded by this for a worn coin or it this very common and of no collector value. Does it need to be authenticated by expert? Or is it no error.... Thanks Russ -

New £5 note flaw pointers please
Russ777 posted a topic in British Coin Related Discussions & Enquiries
Hi I realise this is a coin site but can anyone give me an idea how much someone might pay for a brand new £5 Bailey note flaw. I think its dirt/ink... Just got it today there is a mark under the hologram seal think it may be worth slightly more than £5 now to a real buff any pointers please? very crisp note just one fold... The mark is definitely under the seal. OK its fairly small but first time I have ever spotted a flaw with HM notes. Should I get this authenticated. Wanted to get peoples opinion before I try and flog it... Could be ink could be dirt? But am I right normally flawed ones would be taken out. Might be a lucky find?? Only spotted as I am looking out in change for the 20ps etc Regards Russ35 -
New £5 note flaw pointers please
Russ777 replied to Russ777's topic in British Coin Related Discussions & Enquiries
Hi you can see the splodge on the top right of hologram under the seal if you click on picture. Not only that I have two consecutive numbered notes the first with the error and second without. So I think even being consecutive Vf notes I think there will be some premium even without the small error. Not many flaws/extraneous matter I would imagine get underneath the hologram varnish. Thanks for your opinion all the same -

General question about coin rim lettering modern ones
Russ777 posted a topic in British Coin Related Discussions & Enquiries
Hi this is a general question about rim lettering which I cannot seem to find out. Is there a norm for the way up the rim lettering around modern coins should look. I have found a coin where the rim lettering is standing up (legible left to right) when looking at the REVERSE side on all the other ones I have seen it appears legible at the top when looking at rhe OBVERSE. The coin in question is a foreign one but I am trying to find out if there is a norm for rim lettering on modern English coins or of any interest to collectors??? I notice for example some pound coins have the rim lettering readible at the top when looking at the dated side and others on the undated side?? Or are some of these forgeries what is the correct protocol for rim lettering if you were to make a study of it??? Or are wrong way up rim letterings so common it is not woth the trouble??? If I had a 1970s foreign coin with reverse (wrong way up) edge lettering could this be of interest??? Regards Russ777 -
Hi would anyone make me an offer on 700 in total mixture of KGV 1920 and 1921 1/12 (one twelfth) of an Anna India uncirculated coins? They have been kept in a bag. Many have original 'sheen' I requested a valuation of just the two coins (one of each date), no reply as yet.... Ovbiously may well suit a dealer. Offers please I think ordinarily they catalogue £1 each UNC if proofs could be worth much more. If anyone thinks I may have proofs or how to tell would they please be honest enough to let me know! Thanks for looking
