    Unknown Die?

This is a long shot but im gonna send a link too. I think this is some sort of stamp for teh Banco de Chile the screw hole at the back for a handle? I found this pic http://www.mayoph.com/images2/00c816.jpg If you look at the actual green stamp it shows the same!! so could this be a post mark? the date is irrelevant as the Banco de Chile wasn't founded til 1893 (could it be to do with the fact that the war ended on the the 20th October 1883 and the 1st January 1884 may be celebrated?) Just a thought (I like researching things) Looking at it closer its not the same but close, also if it was a "rubber" stamp it would have raised lettering etc. As i said it was a long shot
  3. Ok, So i now have had a look at some of my questionable farthings at 60x, 80x and 100x Here is a wee list of some of the things i have found. 1840 A/A in gratia (Pic attached~) 1852 E or F over E in Reg Doubled lettering on many letters in Brittania, also this has Briattaniar . no colon (Pic attached of E) 1850 5 over 7 in date (need to get a range of pics for this) 1883 Looks like a forked R in Victoria (Pic attached) 1860 .victoria also the V looks like a V/V (see pics) They are all better looking looking into the microscope but i have an expensive camera and cant seem to get a good frame. Think that should be enough to start with. I also have these at 1200dpi if anyone wants to see them. Need to stick other pics on next post James 1860 x 2 pics 1850 5/7 1883 forked R not very clear but could be a weird die crack or weak die

    Farthings

Colin I will send the pic to you tomorrow night. On the 1860 Did you see the dot before Victoria?? I have 14 1860 of ok grades and this is the only one with the dot. I will send that pic as well. Once i get the camera stuff working my way i will show some more 1875h something under the G of Farthing 1822 small I in Gratia, On the 1860 when i send the scan have a look at the date area = lots of interest on that. Im off tomorrow evening so will get soem pics to you. Cheers as always Heres another couple 1874H B/B R/R in Britt R in Britt Also forked as is R in Reg Cant remember which coin this came off (back to the start again) What amazes me is that i keep finding differences as you said in over strikes etc. What constitutes an over strike and what a repunch?? The 1852 link on your site is off
  5. She is a great ambassador for the country. very brave woman The royals attract tourism, true but only for London
  6. I had Prince Edward Duke ofKent for tea at the hotel today. He looks just like Prince Phillip (cousins) He is in jersey celebrating the 62nd anniversary of the Liberation of the Island. Personally (being a Scot) i have no time for the royals, but he was pleasant enough.

    Ebay's Worst Offerings

I have a friend who, when at school in technical craft decided he wanted to do his table top in one pence pieces, it looked amazing when t was finished! But that there takes a lot of beating
  9. I have had a look at mine, i have K's on my 3. Havent enough of these yet. I haven't really looked at any of mine Pre 1821, just trying to sort out from then to 1956 which isnt as easy as i thought.
  10. Got mine in the post today - im impressed!!
  11. Have i found this?? I was looking at this as I was going to get rid of it, (a double) but it has definite differences to the other 2 i have. 1. The A's in Brittania do look to me like V's invereted. 2. Harder to see on these pics - The 2nd A in Gratia had a thicker and higher raised part on the thick leg of it.
  12. YOU ARE ALL GOING TO GET SICK OF ME TRYING TO CATOGORISE MY FARTHINGS!! Attached are the Obverse and the Reverse of the above mentioned 1853 farthing. I was trying to get the types, so now i have hit a problem. The reverse - I have a cross between a 4 and 5 (no serifs on b of brittaniar, clover head detached) with the added point of DEF ' (no colon) mind you under x60 magnification I can see the lower colon - just! I think the die crack is there as well above the R of brittaniar. AND the lower serif on the F in DEF is missing!! The Obverse - Obverse F Wider date and the doubled A that i spoke of. So the question is what do i call this one???? Just noticed the I on DEI is a bit weird, looking at x60 mag its just tiny lille serif - a weak die strike??
  13. Not that im any kind of Specialist in pennies, but I would grade this as good fine to very fine, it is a Peck 1506 normal 1854 penny with the plain trident. Worth between £7 - £18.00 so if you paid around 17 euros would fit in that bracket. But there are some specialists in here, who will definately know better
  14. Seeing as we all like farthings - and I see that Colin is selling a 1858 small date on Ebay. I have looked and better looked at different pics and all my different 1858's. Colin Cooke doesnt have a pic of the large date for comparison. Im trying to establish what this particular coin is and i feel its a; Reverse = Number 1 Obverse = B Am i right??
  15. Im gonna stick my bit in here as well. Looking at the large Pics above and in particular the A in Gratia. Have a look at the sliced pic of the obverse. (This I can see to the naked eye). It looks like an A over A, i dont have any other doubling on the coin. Now the Reverse. I have a few points on this. Firstly the prongs are certainly wearing down here but the top is in the opposite direction as the one in the photo The colon after has a colon (:') it is more visible to the naked eye than on the pic The colon after DEF is smaller than all my other ones. What do you all think?

    1858 Farthing

Colin Well, what can i say! That is amazing work and certainly has made me rethink about teh way i look at different varieties. I cant believe the match you have managed to get there its brilliant. It will no doubt be a helluva help to all of us in here. So the final verdict is that I have a D, damn need to go buy a few more 58's then Cheers and thanks very much it is really appreciated.

    1858 Farthing

Well Bugger me!!! Now i see the difference so clearly. I am going to send a 1200dpi scan as requested - its amazing what you can learn on here. Colin, is this the same principle in all small date varieties or are there different ways? i.e. 1845?? Its good to have someone so knowledgeable on here. Hope mine is a D before the repunch!! something to think about
  19. I have looked at x40 magnification and there is definately no bars in there, the pic is pretty fuzzy so doesnt really help..... as with the A it is noticable to the naked eye. Cheers

    1858 Farthing

James, That coin is the larger date variety (1A) on my site, it is amazing how noticable the difference is when you have the coin in front of you. I can e-mail you full size scans of the small date and large date coins if you want. It will enable you to see the difference.

    South Africa Farthing Design

I think it is the sweet thorn it grows extensively all over South Africa and is familiar to all South Africans for its many medicinal and other uses. It has a round crown, black branches, trunk, sprays of yellow pompom flowers and characteristic long white thorns. hope that helps
