London Coin Fair
Cerbera100 replied to DaveG38's topic in British Coin Related Discussions & Enquiries
Hmmm... some fairly negative feeling here! Personally, i quite like Coinex - and significantly more now its back in central london rather than western copenhagan! (ok, eXcel center - but close enough!) I tend to rock up on Saturday morning (for the free entry bit) with maybe £200 on me, and wander round chatting to and getting to know dealers... if I see something I fancy, I'll have a punt! It can be a bit crowded, but no worse than the supermarket at the same time! Granted I live in Slough, so its 45mins train/tube or 60mins train/walk to Grosvenor Square, so that removes a fair amount of pain! Hey ho, each to their own! Given that you seem fairly local to the big smoke, so i figure it must be worth one try! -
Could wing it off to the Royal Mint - they'll authenticate it... and all for the price of a stamp!

20 pence coin blank, real or fake?
Cerbera100 replied to a topic in British Coin Related Discussions & Enquiries
Possibly... as Rob said, the main give-away will be the weight and thickness. If you want a definitive answer, contact the Royal Mint and say you've got an odd coin that you would like verified, and they'll give you a name and address to post it off to. Will take about a month, but they'll give you a nice letter to say yes or no! Best bit is that the only cost to you is the initial postage! -
double sided pennies.

How about something like this... I realise is a pattern, but it means that some were officially struck... -
I'd go down Peter's £0.99 start with £1 P&P route initially... then anything that you've got left can be bundled together...

Cleaned Coins
Cerbera100 replied to Red Riley's topic in British Coin Related Discussions & Enquiries
Indeed - I've noticed a couple of lots recently that have been described as 'bright Unc' but have clearly been cleaned/dipped in the not too distant past... Mostly George III/IV, William IV and early Victoria silver... I often wonder what is used, as my silverware at home never comes up that bright! -

a use for '67 pennies

You got as far as 6?! That deserves congratulations if nothing else! In answer to your questions in turn - Yes, I didnt get far enough to find out, and I think so in that you are not 'breaking' it! Though in my view, if putting a stamp on an envelope upside-down is treasonous, surely drilling a hole in Queenie's head should be as well?! -

Yes... not sure sheep have featured on any English coin have they?! And I always thought our Norman friend looks a bit grumpy on that issue! -

Its a hard slog with lots of bold and counter-bold - not quite to the level of the sign above of the door of Room 101, but getting close! -

Ski said something that Peck disagreed with, and both believe themselves to be right... Honours even after Round 1! There...! 18 words and a number! -

Well, happy birthday for tomorrow, and whatever coins you get, enjoy them! -
I think it depends on the individual value and what price you want for them! For instance, a couple of years ago I had a group of 6 very nice condition (EF or better) 1930s/40s farthings - cant remember the dates, so dont ask! Listed twice as a group for a tenner plus a quid P&P, and got no more than 2 watchers either time! Listed separately at a quid (plus a quid) each, and sold all 6 to a total of £23 plus P&P! Five even went to the same buyer!
-
And from the same seller... NEWSFLASH!!! 2003 £2 coins are worth £4 plus £2 P&P!!! Where is the crying smilie when I need it?!
-
Oh dear... someone clearly cant read!
-
In fairness, he might mean the hard plastic that Natwest/Lloyds issued with it... that must be worth at least an extra 50p!

Not sure I can be fagged with the hassle of ebay - having got the scales out, its going to be best part of £25 postage for 1st class! If worse comes to worst, I know that RCC doesnt have a copy in the library, so will speak nicely to our esteemed President/Chairman! -
:groan:
-
Cool - waaay better than my grandad then! Best he managed (from his sock draw!) was a almost unidentifiable 1762 quarter guinea which someone had made a donut from! So much was missing from the middle, that only the width of the crown on the reverse remained!
-
Do you know what the diameter is?
-
Ahh ok... I got one of them too... a grandad see's London Mint Office/Westminster Coins etc adverts in the paper and insists on buying things for me! He nearly stopped when the 1818 crown that he bought me turned out to be a barely legible date rather than the aUnc picture!
-
Westminster Coins sent me one of the Rhodium/platinum/gold-plated pennies for free... It's quite attractive in a strange way, but worth almost exactly what I paid for it! I have to ask though - if you didnt really want it, why did you buy it?!
