    Difference in Grading

I think grading differs from day to day for most people, certainly on mid grade pieces anyway. I often pull a coin from it's envelope prior to packing and think "How have I graded this at GVF, it's VF at best". Other days my thought is "Only GVF, I can hardly see a mark on it" It's easier to grade high end I think as most dealers are reticent to give coins A UNC or UNC and will often pitch them at the GEF level, as we would rather lose a few quid than a potential repeat customer.

    Bun head penny album?

If you only want a date run with Heaton mints and a Beaded and Toothed 1860 variant there is a suitable Whitman if you can find it. I have some Whitman Library style folders that are seperate pages with plastic slides to enable removal and viewing of the coins. I have the Viccy halfpenny one in stock but not the Penny, sorry!

    The end of the Penny

Because there are some Pennies there (millions and trillions of them) in the shape of black gloopy stuff and apparently the Argies want Las Malvinas back (nowt to do with the black gloopy stuff of course). Anyway in for a crap election result in for a war (Mrs T's motto I am told, that is being reborn under the coaffliction government).

    Ok, i have to

Other than playing the part of an erotic car accessory, does she have any other public persona - porn star, royal correspondent, model? Sorry, I'm not familiar with her. I'll ask my 14 year old boy because I haven't got a clue
  6. The seller said he spent just under 5k that day, and couldn't pinpoint the lot? I had already emailed him a few times regarding it, and didn't feel I could hassle him any more! I do feel relatively satisfied it's from the Hoard, however, I'll not be able to prove it, sadly. John Newman by any chance?

I always felt safer when hurtling in if I had twin airbags infront of me.....
  8. I would like to have it in hand to be sure but the portrait is wrong for the shilling (looks like it is wrong at least). It appears that the ties are more like those on the halfcrowns. The shilling first bust has no bow and the second bust has a bow to the top. This one looks like it has a bow to the bottom like the halfcrowns, could of course be a trick of the eye or an altered/forged coin. There is also something going on in the obverse legend between the E and O. Rob is likely the man to know!
  9. The light wasn't too good when I photographed this one. I took it from a lot of 5 as the colour most closely resembled the one you have (very bright and could almost be taken for lustre). I struggle to understand why the seller cannot be more precise regarding the origin as the sales were only 8 months or less ago?????

I'm exempt due to El Poperino saying he would cut me off if I joined
  11. Here's another from the Bedale lot for comparison. I managed to pick up this one on Wednesday

    Token Coinage

You will need a plethora of publications. Dalton and Hamer is widely used but only covers 18th century. Galata's "The Token Book" covers all tokens from 17th to 19th centuries but for the 18th doesn't go into enough depth (size would be prohibitive) so you'll need D&H as well. There are several other useful/necessary works by Dalton, Mitchiner, Withers etc etc. Depends how much you want to know and which area your collection is centred on. Oh, nearly forgot to mention, D&H available via my website
  14. 2nd goal was an attempted cross me thinks which went all wrong and ended up as goal of the season. Howay the Toon next weekend Bollocks! Cisse was the furthest player up the pitch and he knew that. First time effort that's either sensational (which it was) or hits 5 seats along in row Z. If it had of been Ronaldo or Messi it would have been hailed as goal of the century.
  15. Arl ye cockney boys good a good lesson lastnight from the Toon. Howay the lads!!!
  16. Well spotted. Have you told the seller?

    Oh dear

Especially if he had to have anything to do with numbers!
  18. I can't comment on how/how many officers would go in for an armed entry as I am still governed by the Official Secrets Act. Anybody who is particularly interested may search for the Home Office Manual of Guidance on the Police Use of Firearms online. As to your points Chris; The Police had the right man as they had reasonable grounds to suspect that he was involved in a serious arrestable offence. An 18 has to be authorised when a person is under arrest otherwise a Magistrates warrant would be required pre-arrest or a 32 could be used if he was arrested at the scene. At the end of the day I am afraid you will have to stump up as any right minded person would ask why your tennant had no key to access the premises? The Police were also searching for what I presume to be an unlawfully held firearm.

    Crowns or Halfcrowns?

True, the overhang from the Bole collection is going to influence the market for a while yet. Interesting idea, but if I was happy with smaller coins I would probably stick with pennies as these go back even further. I just like the look and feel of the larger currency. So does my wife Is she out a lot? I was referring to my bank balance... some people, minds in the gutter!

A strange notion - that the penny is a "smaller coin" ! Methinks it is a reference to the silver ones.
  21. That's Tayside Clive, different legislation North of the border. English Forces will normally only pay where they have made an error eg wrong house, wrong door, did not attempt to contact keyholder etc etc.
  22. That would be very kind. Apparently this coin is from a 2009 auction, would that seem right to you? I'd be really interested to know whether the coin is described as 'bright' or not? Also, do you know whether the coins actually came from the hoard 'bright,' or are these just the ones that were so cruddy they were cleaned? The date is wrong for the sale. The hoard was found in 2009, the first part was auctioned on 14/09/11, part 2 18/01/12 and the final part this Wednesday. Lot 14 or 18 from January looks like it could be the one? Both lots mention multiples of CI shillings with mm triangle in each. "good portrait detail and most with lustre" forms part of the description. Lot 14 had 5 shillinga and 15 sixpences, hammered at £540. Lot 18 had 10 shillings and hammered at £750.
  23. The hoard was/is being disposed of over 3 sales, the final part going this week. I am a regular at Tennants but have had little to do with that lot as I mainly deal in milled. We (myself and the old man) have 4 halfcrowns from the hoard as part of our collection. From the coins I have viewed I can say that they come in all conditions and hues, some gun-metal grey and some shite and briney. I found a report for the portable antiquities scheme or finds liaison officer online and printed a copy for the provenance notes of ours (mine is over in Durham at the old mans house) so you could probably do the same. Where/when did you buy it? I can dig out my old catalogues this week and see if I can pin it down to a lot for you.
  24. There was one last week on offer from a Chinese seller.....
