I would have thought so. Weight is usually a good guide to whether a coin is 'dodgy' or not but as forgers become more sophisticated the weights will approach the correct values, so not a 100% guarantee but a reasonable guide. Thanks for that, just picked up a currency 1839 at a reasonable price. It ticks all the right boxes for being genuine, I analysed it for about 2 hours against 4 other currency pictures I found on the net so all is looking good! Depending on what you have paid for it you could submit it to Robert Matthews for authentication.

I can never see the point of all those sellers who put 'happy bidding' on their listing. Wtf does that actually mean? I'm only happy when I've won something, preferably cheaply, so too much bidding would make me unhappy! Unfortunately Dave I'm only happy when I have sold something, preferably for an absurdly high price, needless to say I am usually a right miserable git.

It makes sense for room bids to take precedence as the house is paid and gets the goods cleared on the day, BUT, it would take an exceptionally clever auctioneeer to know what point to start taking the bidding against the book to ensure the room wins the lot at the top book price. The practice that really "boils my urine" is the frightfiully nice chap on the rostrum saying "one more might get it" to the room. He is supposed to act on behalf of the proxy bidder and obtain the lot at the lowest possible price for them (it is in all of their T&C's)

It just looks the 8 has been re-punched Steve and it has been punched slightly lower than the original. The first and most obvious thing to strike you is the lack of WW from the truncation. For the die to be an earlier date than 1858 these initials must be there.

BP does not appear on the reverse of the veiled heads. Marsh has the mintage at 130,000 and rates it as Rare. I'm with Peter and would say it has a value at only a little over bullion due to condition. Halves are not nearly as well collected as Fulls and this reflects in the prices made by mediocre pieces that are rare.

I seem to have got stubbornly stuck at nEF with them (EF for Type 2). I buy any that look like they might nudge that up by a fraction of a grade. I often wonder what I'd pay for a genuine UNC if one ever came up. In 2009 Spink thrust the price up from £15 to £75. I was never sure if it was a misprint or not. But then again, they seem to do that for all modern coins where the year ends in the same as the catalogue year. In 2001 for example, all 1951 coins shot through the roof, crowns doubling from £10 to £20. I haven't seen the price since - can anyone confirm what the current 1959S Spink value is? A jaw dropping £85 in UNC yet only £10 in EF. A multiple of 8.5 in grade from EF to UNC is bizarre?

In a nutshell old bean, there is sweet fanny adams that you can do as a seller. Ebay will ALWAYS side with the buyer. I know you only sell in the UK so at least you are semi protected as you can use recorded or special deliveries. The buyer will have to open an item not received dispute and I always make them escalate it to a full claim rather than just shell out. This is only on principle though because in the end it makes not a sheeite of difference. You will in turn have to record a claim against the Royal Snail, but I think you have to wait 14 days from date of posting. If you swim with the sharks you have to accept that one day you're going to get nipped! Hiya again, got £100 for the gold one which i thought was quite good, since im pretty skint lol(that'll do my wee girls birthday next month)....though she did try to tell me she was only giving me £40 'hahahaha' was my reaction (nice try misses). Just shows you, they try to rip folk off. The other coins are doing terribly on ebay like you said £100 - good result for a fairly standard sovereign! Mind you, not being a gold collector, I have no idea if that's a fair reflection of current bullion values? But £100 is a LOT better than £40 Around £130 for a half sovereign and £260 for a full is the current buying price in sale rooms.

In a word, no. To have a genuine coin would require an obverse die fitted top and bottom and that just does not happen.

There are a couple of ebay sellers you could ask. One of them even states in huge bold capitals THIS COIN HAS BEEN CLEANED. He has bought a few coins from me and I very nearly added him as a blocked bidder due to his inexcusable crimes. I understand why he does it if I can only get £10 for a toned A UNC 1887 florin and he can triple that just by "enhancing" it. What I cannot understand is the idiot that wants to pay 3 times more for a cleaned coin than a nicely toned example
