I hate to say I told you so, but..... -
Nah, you want yourself a nice mahogany cabinet Declan. It will act as a coffee table for you as well! I have a nice semi spare one I can let you have at a snip, a 28 drawer model by Peter Nichols

Opinions of this Penny

Dave put up a post re the 1893/2 penny a wee while ago, sticking a picture of an UNC example on it. All of the higher grade ones I have seen display a central diagonal line from near to the top right of the 3 to the tip of the central arm and this line stands proud of the 3 ie it has been cut deeper than the over punched 3. It took me quite a while to get my head around it but when I eventually worked out what I was looking at it made perfect sense. -
A long time ago in a galaxy pretty much where we are actually, I got ripped by centsles in the States. I bought a couple of his nicely slabbed A UNC GB bronze coins from his poor (at the time) pictures. The only thing A UNC was the bloody case he had put them in!!!!

I use black or light blue and they both seem okay. Best advice is try what you have to hand and see which, if any, you favour.

I use the same camera as Declan and put the coin in natural daylight. I set the camera to Auto and let it rip. Not as professional as Declan but it seems to work 9 times out of 10

Value Trends

The problem is that the minority (and that's what they are) of fraudsters, shysters and layabouts are the rope which the Government, The Daily Mail, The News Of The Screws, The Sun, The Star, ITV, and all the rest use to hang the genuinely sick & disabled. I'll put one more fact your way then I'll shut up on the matter (I've become way too sensitive to what's going on) : the fraud rate for DLA is less than 1%, and the total benefit fraud for IB and DLA amounts to £1.5bn. Ok, not a sum to be sniffed at, but when you consider that Count Dracula Osborne is cutting the welfare budget by £18bn, and that tax evaders cheat us all of more than £120bn annually ... well, it makes you think (I hope). Apologies for ranting but life for disabled people in this country just gets worse and worse. I think you can remove the disabled people line from your sentence Peck, the country is rapidly heading down the shitter. Everything is being cut to the bone apart from the prices we pay for essentials like food, fuel and utilities which are all rising faster than a teenage boy at an all girl pool party. -
Found this 1917 among a bulk lot. If the raised areas are post production I cannot see how it was done!

So do I, he lives 150 miles away from me with his mother. I just have him for all of his school holidays. I have a nice treat lined up for him in August, 3 days working with me at a coin auction.... I bet his ipod makes a guest appearance!
-
New fangled mumbo jumbo. My 13 year old boy is more interested in drinking a pint of beer on an ipod that isn't really there (the beer that is) than he is in doing something constructive with his time. It's a shame that there isn't an app for surgically removing the bloody things from the palms of hands!

Any Idea on this coin?
argentumandcoins replied to a topic in British Coin Related Discussions & Enquiries
It's now a flat disc, but it was once a shilling of George IV, probably 1826 from what you can make out of the numbers. -
187 1 wide date penny ?
argentumandcoins replied to wasswasp's topic in British Coin Related Discussions & Enquiries
It is a Gouby 1871 Ac with 12 teeth between the 1's. The Aa has 11 1/2, Ab 11 3/4 and Ad 12 1/2. -

In Gouby's specialised edition of the bronze penny 1860-1901 he lists 4 different variations. Yours is Gouby 1871 Ac, with 12 teeth as a gap, Aa has 11 1/2, Ab 11 3/4 and Ad 12 1/2. -
Patio and cake are the only things I can associate with slabs that would be of any use or interest to me, but, each to his own.

1903 open 3 penny
argentumandcoins replied to azda's topic in British Coin Related Discussions & Enquiries
In hindsight, I wish I'd gone higher and I believe you got a steal at £330. I think up to £500+ would still have been worthwhile. The main thing I notice with eBay is that 'expensive' (i.e. genuinely rare and/or in outstanding condition) coins generally go cheaply, while 'cheap' (i.e. less rare and/or poorer condition) coins are often expensive. If that makes sense? I sell a heap of stuff every week on ebay (as you are well aware Steve) and concur. Mediocre common dross does okay, silver is obviously very hot at the moment, but quality or rare items do bugger all. I think if I was wanting to sell something like the open 3 in question I would either put it into the sale I am runing up Norf in August (big plug there) or (more sensibly) sell at London Coin Auctions as they are, in my opinion, the likliest house at the moment to maximise a price on a rare penny. -
1903 open 3 penny
argentumandcoins replied to azda's topic in British Coin Related Discussions & Enquiries
Definitely an open 3... I was the under bidder at £310 and rather hoped to get it. Now I wish I'd gone more as it's the best I've ever seen too, especially the obverse Have to agree Accumulator, nice OBV, not seen a better one as yet. This guy is stating that this is an open 3, i'm not so sure it is. http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=280667045407&ru=http%3A%2F%2Fshop.ebay.co.uk%3A80%2F%3F_from%3DR40%26_trksid%3Dp4712.m570.l1313%26_nkw%3D280667045407%26_sacat%3DSee-All-Categories%26_fvi%3D1&_rdc=1 Clearly not an open 3. I like his caveat "I have been told this is an open 3 but I am no expert" I might email him and tell him it's actually an Aston Martin DB9S in silver -
Well, presumably he was responsible for the condition of the coin as his id proudly states. What is more worrying is that it has 4 bids already. Still under melt price though Rob (which is where I suspect it is heading).

Sovereign prices
argentumandcoins replied to Coindome's topic in British Coin Related Discussions & Enquiries
There are 2 types of prices, buying and selling. Buying price is, as Peck suggests, based on bullion. Selling is bullion minus the dealer or auction house cut. Current saleroom prices are around £190 + or - an average 18% depending on whether you are buying or selling. -

Be even better if the Toon manage to sneak a point or 3 off them on Tuesday night! Keep dreaming John, lol, still remember Cantonas little chip at St James' and Keegans meltdown on Sky, great TV Not as much as I remember Schmeichel getting chipped when we gave them a 5-0 drubbing. Phillipe Albert if i remember rightly, was that the last time Newccie Broon won against UTD? A blast from the past good old Albert! We did win a 4-3 game when Keano lost his blob and got an early bath. He fell out with Shearer over something! Must admit, they were great to watch at the time, Tino Asprilla, Les Ferdinand etc, always goals involved, Keegean never knew how to defend lol Best form of defence Dave.... Attack, attack, attack attack attack! Those were the days, food was cheap, petrol too, you could leave your back door open all night (still got burgled but the weather was warmer then), girls wore short skirts and swore less than you..... aw man -
