    Ebay's Worst Offerings

Yes, it was becoming a bit of a lynch mob. I don't see it being a lynch mob Sion, as i keep saying, if you had purchased a coin from said ebay seller and paid way over the odds i think attitudes would have changed. So i'll say no more on the forum about it The forum had been notified and eBay had been notified so there was not much more we could have done. Back on topic- http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/VIP-Satin-Finish-Commemorative-Churchill-Coin-1965-/290545090274?pt=UK_Coins_BritishComm_RL&hash=item43a5d63ee2#ht_500wt_1156 Almost worth it! Had to check out their other items just in case they had the complete set of VIPs. Nice pair of fingerless groves there. Shame the elbow length fingerless gloves weren't satin finish, might have asked for a demo

That kind of begs the question, why are you asking if you think you already know the answer?
  4. The really good ones are few and far between, unless you buy some ghastly modern proof! There are very very few coins that don't show some sign of circulation or poor handling when scanned/photographed. If you liked it with the human eye I wouldn't worry about how it looks when blown up (unless you have bionic eyes of course!).
  5. Pages xix-xx of the preamble give a list of the locations used. 10 museums and 33 individual collections. Basically any museum that has a large coin collection and a short list of who's who in post war numismatic circles. I could, but I'm not sure the demand would justify doing a serious work on halfpennies. 1/2ds have always been the poor relation. I would go for a halfpenny reference. At the moment they probably represent the best value for money available as they are least popular among collectors and therefore freely available in decent grades.
  6. You can see an example on my site. Ref the milled edge Pennies The Royal Mint themselves have stated, after electro-microscopic examination, that all examples are post production alterations.
  7. I would still only give it maybe a touch more than GVF for wear but the cleaning and edge knock will drag it down to GVF or less. A superior example only made just shy of £4000 at DNW yesterday (including premium as hammer was £3300). It was graded (typically harshly) at NEF and sometime lightly cleaned. Lot 367 for those who are interested.
  8. Rob, firstly please PM me with the cost of 10 copies of Davies as I could likely shift them from my site. I agree about the pricing section, totally irrelevant. Rarity is something which is hard to determine other than the way Michael Gouby did for some eg. 50+ known. Some of the recent discoveries may well be unique until 6 months after publication when another 50 are found by people using the book to check their collections, thus negating the rarity level! I have a greater interest, from a collecting point of view, in the early milled silver and would welcome an updated ESC, which is now nearly 20 years out of date! If you need any pics from my stock or collection give me a shout (no, I won't eat into your Royalties) John.
  9. Richard, I haven't got a clue who produced it but I would be suprised if it is solid gold. If you are thinking of buying it I wouldn't bother. The only gold worth buying is gold that is worth something as a coin rather than a piece of bullion. Look at buying a nice fractional guinea or something similar.

    CGS grading service

That depends on what you class as the returns If you wish to preserve your coins, have them authenticated or have a third party grade applied, the returns will be worth it. If you are talking about financial gain your coins would have to be top notch examples to stand any chance of it being well worth it. I don't like slabbed coins and tend not to bid on them unless they are on the wants list or part of a lot with other saleable items. Some people only buy slabbed but they are chasing the high end pieces....

Definitely a soil find by the looks of it.

A pic would help Derek, but as Scott said, it is usually caused by a reaction in soil. A bath with olive sometimes helps!

    Victorian Coronaion Token

I mean honestly, what a load of twonk. Poetic licence with Wills (Rocker!)hair and kate looks a bit squinty eyed and puggish How do you turn a fox into a pig? Marry it or put it on a coin

    Blocked ebay bidders

Yes, I contacted them and had the payment reversal reversed after the refund of the payment had been refunded (sorry, it's Dublin and I was confused). Fraudster has his coins, I have my money and he is allowed to con the next seller he meets, the world is at peace.
  16. If anybody was at the sale today I would appreciate a heads up on the price of lot 1155 (1893/2 Penny). Thanks in hope and anticipation!

8 negatives removed from my ebay account tonight after speaking with a lovely Irish girl called Kelly at ebay. Paypal found in buyers favour today and ripped the money from my account, I phoned ebay customer service and they can do a check with the Irish postal service which showed the items were signed for by the buyer Great I get my feedback revised and have the 1 star DSR's removed. Only 1 problem, he is a lying cheating fraudster and they will not pass the case to the local plod so that he can be hung, drawn and quartered. Oh, actually 2 problems, ebay can't refund my money, I have to contact paypal tomorrow when their offices are open
  18. The altered date example in the London sale on Sunday made about £240 I think, so if it is an altered date forgery somebody got it fairly cheaply? If it is one of the copies they have paid 10 times the price they could buy it for!

1058 made £420 (Fair) and 1059 made £2000 (VF). The other VF one must have been withdrawn/unsold. 18% to add to those prices!!!!

    London Coins auction

London results are online. The 1893/2 realised £1600 + premium so I guess my example will be coming off the bay with only £77 on it at the moment!

Crikey, now you're asking! My recollection was that it went for a bit more than upper estimate but I didn't keep a record. Currently sorting out the 153 coins I bought... A good day then! You really must get into the habit of recording the hammer price in your catalogue!!! Thanks, John.

This guy must have purchased a £500 bag of mule 20p's judging by the amount he is selling and has sold....or did somebody mention something about forgeries/copies??????? http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/MINT-ERROR-UNDATED-20-P-COIN-MULE-/200583578396?pt=UK_Coins_BritishDecimal_RL&hash=item2eb3b6831c

That doesn't happen in the UK mate. Ebay/paypal just assume that the seller is guilty because they can replace sellers easily but if the buyers leave that kills them dead.

    Blocked ebay bidders

I have been contacted by Declan today and have sent him my full blocked bidders list. 1 of the bidders on my list hit him for a nominal value coin 3 years ago. Small world or regular con merchant?
