My last 9 comments in reply to negatives were of the utmost professionalism (8 from the mad Irish man and 1 from a guy in Malta who wanted me to discount 2 proof sets I had on Buy it now) Anybody who wants to read the negatives feel free to check my ebay user ID john8150_0 One or two of you will have undoubtedly bought from me in the past. Unfortunately it's the few rotten apples that leave the sour taste in my mouth and with nearly 8000 feedback I have obviously had considerably more decent honest buyers than I have had conmen.

I have just been contacted by another ebay member and customer of mine who tells me that the "buyer" in question is a scammer who has claimed non-receipt against 3 other sellers this month. Anybody who wants his details for their blocked bidder list drop me a PM. No wonder he doesn't want to have to submit to due process!

Surely this is always going to be a problem with untracked mail. If I was a seller, I'd just refund the full cost of untracked low value items going astray in the UK , and insist that UK items over £50, and ALL items shippped abroad, went via tracked mail. In this instance, John, I would't risk negative feedback over such a low cost item sent abroad. Just learn from it and move on. Any rate, right or wrong, that's the way I would personally look at it. I've also gotta say that, although I appreciate how you feel, I don't really think it's helpful to resort to name calling. If you were the buyer, you might be just as annoyed from their angle. How many times do you think a seller should pay up to avoid negative FB? 10 claims this year so far. Regular buyers I have refunded and asked to send the money on if the coin turned up (1 did in Russia yesterday after 3 months!!!). Buyers not known to me have to submit to due process as Ebay/Paypal claim to monitor how many times a buyer claims non-receipt. I will often make an offer to pay half back as a gesture of goodwill and that has been accepted on 2 higher priced lots to the States where the buyers have then gone on to spend quite a bit of money on my website because they appreciated my honesty and integrity (1 of those coins eventually turned up with the buyer who sent on the refund and the other is still MIA since December). The same offer of half was made to this buyer. As for tracked post out of the UK.... Airsure is the only true tracked mail and is only available to a handful of countries. International Signed For is the alternative and once it leaves the UK it doesn't exist. The actual cost for Signed For less than 100gms (almost all coins) is £6.26 in Europe or £6.77 to the rest of the world. Add on my postage costs of 12p for envelope, coin holder and sellotape (not including time to wrap or the diesel required for a 22 mile round trip to the post office) and you can see why I charge £6.50 to Europe or £7 anywhere else. Who among anybody on here would buy a coin for £7 or less and pay the same in postage? I think Peters xenophobic approach to selling is quite understandable. As for the name calling.... as a man of honour I usually meet threats with the offer of extreme violence in return, unfortunately the cyber world means that the 40 yard heroes (people that used to shout abuse from a crowd and then run when I slowed down the car) can now do it in a spineless, faceless and nameless way from thousands of miles away. If I was the buyer I would either have paid for insured mail, taken the offer of splitting the loss, taken the loss on the chin or bothered to see whether or not the seller has a track record of non-delivery and then decided whether or not to submit a claim. As I said though, I am an honourable man....

The latest from an a***hole in the States who "bought" an Indian Head for less than £10 including postage (un-tracked of course). Posted first week of Feb and still not there. I offered to halve the loss with him or told him to open a dispute via paypal to reclaim the whole lot; I will be opening a dispute monday if the coin does not show up. I am not happy at all you are making me do that. I will not accept half of my money when I recieved nothing. I would understand if it was less grade but I have NOTHING. On monday if I have no coin or full refund I will also be leaving negative 1star feedback. Now I know what all of you that are only buyers are going to say, but, if you pay cash in the form of a cheque, BACS or PO for a coin do you risk the sender using standard untracked and un-insured post?

Sorry but I just had to cut and paste..... I am able to obtain such rare coins because I work in public transport This coin is extremely rare indeed, only one of two in my collection of over 400 £2 coins Well at last we know how to grade rarity on a scale of every public transport worker has 1, 2, 3 etc etc

    The 1926 ME penny

How relevant would the production timeframe be in relation to whether the ordinary or modified effigy was minted first? I only ask because at the moment how often/early in the year do we see the new date coinage we are using today? I do not know how the coinage would have been released in 1926/7 but I am pretty sure that some areas of the country would probably never have had an issue of ME'e released through their banks. It is quite possible that the entire mintage was released into circulation in one area only, thus by the time an ME penny reached the Manchester area for example it would already have seen quite a bit of circulation.
  9. Pictures below of a 1919KN Penny in mid grade, WOW you all say! I noticed that the diameter was slightly smaller than normal (30.08mm) and it also, obviously, weighs light at 8.8gms. The edge of the coin does not appear to have been machined, but there is what is best described as a fracture line on the circumference showing smooth at the reverse edge and as a series of vertical lines at the obverse edge (almost like milling). The edge probably doesn't show up too well. Anybody got any experience or knowledge of the validity or otherwise? No wild guesses please Dave!

    1905 Halfcrown

The odd edge knock and some bag marking detracts a little but there is very little sign of wear. The first points to show on the reverse are the corners of the shield and they show only the feintest trace, the garter legend is very strong. GVF is a safe assessment for buying but I would think it'll be a little bit better in the hand. Certainly not A UNC though! Never trust a dealer Dave

    1919KN Penny

Either turned on a lathe to skim the edge or turned against a grinder. Marks look uniform so my guess would be the former. Yes, if post production it would definitely be genuine and that would account for the diameter and weigfht difference.
  13. argentumandcoins

    1919KN Penny

Tool marks Dave. Either an alteration post production or tool marks from a length of metal which was machined to roughly the correct diameter to produce blanks for forgeries from. Looks post production to me though.

    Making a quick buck

Years is not uncommon on higher end stuff. You need a lot of capital and nerves of steel! Oh and an understanding spouse, bank manager etc Drug dealing would show a quicker return although the results for failure are much worse

    Who/What is Satin ?

I haven't managed to find one. I phoned Spink earlier today, they don't have the book in stock, but I did manage to find an old thread on here which gives JJerrams address as: PO Box 63, Stockport, Cheshire, SK4 5BU That's as far as I have got..... John cannot be contacted at that P.O. address anymore. I have his email address if you want it Bernie. Just drop me a PM and I'll pass it on.

    The 1926 ME penny

You have to remember that when Freeman compiled his books he based his rarity levels on a dip sample of 70000 or so coins. I don't have his earliest book (it's held by my father) but the exact numbers of how many of each date he had are in there. His estimated rarity levels are therefore quite often totally inaccurate, but they were the best that he could come up with. He may have been lucky enough to have had 12 donated from 8 collectors, 4 of whom may have had both types and the other 4 only the ordinary effigy. The fact that they were collectors means that they will have noticed the M.E. and kept/bought it because of that reason. This gives the impression that it was relatively common. If the 8 people that donated were men on the street you may well have found that all 12 were ordinary effigy? The figures I have quoted are only for illustration purposes! The 26 M.E. is undoubtedly a rare coin, as is the 1909 F169 etc etc, quite often much rarer than Freeman reported. As for condition, I can't answer. Any 1926 in UNC is quite scarce, whereas an 1862 in UNC is quite common. A paradox indeed.

    Who/What is Satin ?

I have just been in contact with John Jerrams and he wants the world to know that his interest in Pennies is still very much alive! He will not however be revisiting his publication, but in fairness there isn't really the need to with the work that has recently been done by Michael Gouby.

    Monthly Coin Magazines

I am (like others on here) a Coin News advertiser so my subscription is free,..... for £60/month ad fee! Like most I find parts of the magazine interesting, parts very useful (auction dates I had missed or forgotten), parts entertaining (View of the Bay) and parts totally pointless (Stygian Coins of the 4th Century with horses on, actually I made that up but it sounds about right). The thing is, what else is there for anybody with the even slightest interest in coins? Yes, I know about the BNJ and SNC, but they are not readily available to the man in the street whereas Coin News is. For all of it's limitations, and there are many, it is the only thing on newsagents shelves that people can pick up to rekindle or ignite an interest in collecting coins. Bringing new collectors into the hobby is to the benefit of all of us (yes, I do have a rather vested interest). It broadens the market when the time comes for us to move on spares or parts of the collection that have fallen out of favour and it increases the examination of coins by new eyes meaning more varieties etc will be discovered and hopefully recorded. Rather than knocking it we should be supporting it because if it goes the way of Coin Monthly we are left with nothing. So for the sake of £3 whatever a month get your hands in your pockets and get your copies bought!

    Melting down coins for profit

I would guess that the sovereigns don't find the melting pot as the coin itself is as good as any hallmark (the carat is always 22 although the weight obviously alters with wear). The tat jewellery on the other hand will all be reformed into nice ingots as most chains are only marked on the clasp and thus the purity (or even metal) of the chain cannot be assumed to be correct.

    1827 Penny

I have to be honest and say that if I had ersed up a listing like that there is no way on Gods earth that I would honour the transaction. He will have been very lucky to have bought it at less than £120, so a £119.50 loss (taking account of selling and paypal fees) is far too bitter a pill to swallow. I'd take the negative feedback without even blinking!
