1920 George V Threepence
argentumandcoins replied to Rob75's topic in British Coin Related Discussions & Enquiries
I think you should grade for Dix Noon and Webb! You're a bit on the harsh side as it is probably Fine overall. There were 2 "types" in 1920 as it was the transitional year for the change in silver content of threepences, so type A is 0.925 silver and type B 0.500 silver. You will need to get hold of a copy of English Silver Coinage since 1649 by Rayner, where things like this are noted. -
Charles II Pattern Farthing In Silver
argentumandcoins replied to azda's topic in British Coin Related Discussions & Enquiries
Check my site, there's one on there. I saw another go in auction at about £250 in June (VFish). That was a provincial auction though, where I thought the price a bit on the high side. -

One of the un-opened trunks marked Lord Lucan? -
I can't decide if the portrait is meant to be Henry VIII or Prince Charles!! I was wondering, could it be a 'Mary Rose' souvenir type of thing? It looks modern to me. I think you're right with Henry VIII and it certainly looks modern, so I'd go with the Mary Rose hypotheses

Has anybody seen this error before?

Just looked at Colins site and it looks like I have an 1864 variety that is unrecorded lying in my spare stock. It's a plain 4 with what he would describe as the thin 8 (an 8 the way we would write it). The other 8's all look like the one on your 63 (a circle on top of a circle). I'll get a picture up tomorrow if I get time.
-
The underlying figure is the standard shaped 8 on Farthings. The re-punched 8 is peculiar to 1863 and 1864 as far as I can make out, even then it is not the only one used as the standard shaped 8 (thicker to the left side diagonal) also appears on these years. Colin may well shoot me down of course!

Flaw or Overdate?

Condition makes it impossible to say what it might be. My own opinion is that it is just the original numerals have spread due to impact and wear. -
1863 penny

Without seeing a picture we cannot tell you what it is, but there is no recorded 3 over 5. There are however several varieties of 5 over 3. -
1841 Halfpenny

Yes, there was a bronzed proof for 1841 according to Peck (listed as Very Rare). Certainly looks good enough, but couldn't confirm without having it in the hand. -
1933 Penny tin foil impression
argentumandcoins replied to azda's topic in British Coin Related Discussions & Enquiries
I got an altered date in an envelope marked 1933 penny amongst a large bulk lot from London Coins about 5 years ago. At the moment the old man has it sitting in the oddments tray in the cabinet. May well be worth passing it on to some total imbecile on ebay!!!! -

They were sold on ebay if memory serves? -
Just on the off chance that any ebayers happen to Google the title of the post ALL "1763 BRITISH COIN" ON EBAY ARE FORGERIES OF THE NORTHUMBERLAND SHILLING Sorry to the members of the site, but I have just been on ebay.com and was astounded to see a regular bidder on my items had actually bought one of these from China for £155

Nickleback has a tenuous link to an American coin and secondly if you can't appreciate lots of bits in that video you've gotta be dead from the waist down

1763 British Coin
argentumandcoins replied to argentumandcoins's topic in British Coin Related Discussions & Enquiries
There is another answer of course.... find a dealer that you trust (someone like me or Rob ) and make your high value purchases from them. I have never knowingly sold a forgery and always refund in full if, for any reason, the buyer is not happy. I can't speak for any other dealers, but I am sure 99% will be the same. My library grows every other month and currently stands me at around £1000, for most collectors that is way more than they are willing to spend, quite understandably, that is where the benefit of using the forum correctly comes into it's own. I am sure that virtually any coin that comes onto the open market will have a reference in a book owned by somebody on here. As Rob said, do your homework. Start a thread or contact somebody by PM if you don't want to alert the competition, but do ask somebody! -
Oh dear! My grandfather used to own a pub and he once got one in the till, he died in 1968 anybody want to buy it from me?

For which I blame the teachers. I think it probably started with legislation... Once we removed the power to fully be "in loco parentis" (corporal punishment) it was the slippery slope, pardon the pun on slipper! I used to be terrified of some of my teachers because I knew the slipper on the arse (junior school) or the cane (senior school) hurt, quite a lot actually. The time I spent in the job just reinforced my belief that there is virtually a total breakdown in modern society with the "what are you going to do about it" attitude prevalent. My eldest boy has a right mouth on him (he lives with his mother and I only get him in school holidays). I wouldn't have dared speak to my old man like that and the tales he tells about school imply that he gets so much detention because that's how he speaks to teachers. I'd knock seven bells out of him but he'd probably sue me..................

1933 Penny on "The One Show" (BBC1 09/08/10)
argentumandcoins replied to Beebman's topic in British Coin Related Discussions & Enquiries
I wonder how many the Mint think to be too many???? What's the estimate now, a couple of hundred million? You'd think with all of this quantatative easing the BOE and Mint could get their heads together and just ease the current pound coins away, perhaps replacing them with 99p coins so we would not need as many pennies in our change (sorry earlier thread ) -
1763 British Coin
argentumandcoins replied to argentumandcoins's topic in British Coin Related Discussions & Enquiries
But it would be illegal to pass it of as an original item, or at least to imply as such. Correct. The problem is how do you enforce the law internationally, or does it even apply internationally? We have all seen the fake clothing sweatshops being raided on the news as copyright laws apply to Armani et al and I bet most of us have seen the coin production videos (mostly US forgeries) where no action appears to be underway at all. All these items can do is to de-stabilise the market by creating mistrust. I haven't had one in the hand so I don't know what the metal; content is or if the feel right but if they start changing hands at fairs etc it will be a disaster. -
I share your pain. Mine are too busy fighting, shagging and doing things they'd rather I didn't know about to concentrate on anything so 'static' as collecting coins. I can just about get them to play golf, but that's as far as they will go. Just got my eldest boy (12) interested in fishing. He told me you can do it on an xbox, ps3 apparently! He even likes helping to sort my job lots from auctions and takes some for his "collection" Sadly he has discovered girls and puberty now so I fear all may be lost!!! I started, on passing an antiques shop many many years ago, and in a saucer in the window was a worn copper coin dated 1672, price 6d. I couldn't resist owning something that old, that cheap! The head was a silhouette, but I could make out the legend CAROLVS A CAROLO, was thrilled when told this was Charles II. Just finished on a large lot tonight and his latest acquisiton is a Chinese cash coin. He asked about the deutchesthingy coins and liked the cockerel on some French stuff. If I can't stimulate his interest in history at least he might learn some geography, which would be nice as most kids don't know their arse from their elbow these days!

Welcome to the forums Brian "the whole 30 years" of what, exactly? (By the way, you'd be better creating a new thread for something like this - just for future reference. But it's no biggie.) If I'm wrong I'll apologise but think this might be the prelude to a spam attack... Tres bien mon amie

Cannon Powershot A480 review for coin pictures
argentumandcoins replied to Hussulo's topic in Free for all
I used to be steady enough holding a handgun A very dull day here today, so I'll see how it does in low light as I need to get a load of stuff onto ebay. I always use macro for coins, always seemed to give the best results, I'll try both and see which turns out best. Yes, the coin has some nice colours. It came last week in a job lot and I just thought it would be a nice one to play around with due to the colours. It's getting harder to pick up coins like that as most people think the futures bright, the futures dipping!! -
Cannon Powershot A480 review for coin pictures
argentumandcoins replied to Hussulo's topic in Free for all
Considering the low light I'm quite impressed. It didn't arrive until 1800hrs (good old Argos) and then I had my house husband chores to attend to..... so I haven't had much chance to play around with it. The one thing that is slightly irksome is the fact that freehand shots on macro appear to be a no go area. I took 8 to get 2 decent pictures. The Fuji wins hands down in that area as it has an anti blur feature (the canon might have when I get time to read the manual) I have only owned Fuji digital cameras and find the menu easy to navigate, the canon will take a bit of time to get used to. It is slightly unfair to compare ease of use and features as the Fuji was 5 times the price of the canon, that said the canon certainly appears to be a very decent piece of kit for less than £60. I'll ask your good selves to pass comment on how good or bad you think the 2 pictures are. Tomorrow I will compare Fuji and Canon shots of the same coin in good light and add the pictures for you all to judge. The one thing that does stand out immediately is the fact that the Fuji gives "cold" photos if you know what I mean, the Canon seems to give a softer more accurate picture. I will put a disclaimer on this "review" and tell you all that I am no David Bailey!
