LCA June

Thanks mate. I can't see the Boro causing your lads too much stress. I thought Liverpool were nailed on for a trophy this season but their mid season loss of form left me a little perplexed. -

I think Rafa was swayed by the fans at the backend of last season. He's like the rest of us (loves to be loved)! Chelski hate us anyway as we are often their bogey side so it'll be nice to hear the away end bouncing to "Rafa, Rafael, Rafa, Rafael, Rafael Benitez" after we go 2 up.... Thanks re the old boy Mike. He was my best mate and saleroom sidekick so I'm a bit lost at the moment TBH. The write up was my tribute to him and the picture was taken on the most expensive day of my life (I should have said "I don't" but you live and learn). He was always torn between the 2 denominations but in the end he would always take a halfcrown over a penny. I'll lose money selling via auction but it was the only way I could put his mark in the numismatic history books and raise enough cash quickly enough to buy his house (if all goes well). Feel free to bid away...... -
Calling all Sovereign Experts

It looks absolutely fine to me. Without handling it I would agree that it's a genuine mint issue and grades at VF or a touch better. If it is a fake it is a very old one as it is virtually impossible for the fakers to get the difference in colour into the legend and the bits of dirt into the edge milling in the field. What was the source of the purchase? -

We were crap Peter. Luckiest team in the league to win that title as Brighton bottled it big style. I can't get my head around Rafa buying Murphy not to play him? The lad looked streets ahead of Mitrovic and Perez in terms of goal scoring ability. -

Thanks Rob, I've been a wee bit busy mate... Aye, 1 bidder against the reserve will do it. It hurt me more than you can imagine to sell the collection but needs must and I couldn't think of a better way to honour the old mans memory. The printed catalogue is a bit of a let down as LCA haven't listed the collections in the same sections (hammered halfcrowns are unattributed). I'll have to cough to shedding a few tears when I saw it in print this morning though. I have a house full of auction catalogues to empty now (he kept everything). -

The old man bought it Rob. He passed on 28/03 and the Halfcrown and Penny collections are offered in this sale. I was offered £4500 for the 1667/4 about 6-9 months after the sale but Dad decided to keep hold of it. I set the estimate on it and based it on the massive increase in prices on the 1726 Halfcrowns which are (as you know) considerably commoner. This is the 1st 1667/4 offered since the Adams sale and if it doesn't meet the reserve I am more than happy to put it back in my piggy bank ;-) -
I don't see much wrong with it other than the rim nicks. If it has been in the family for a confirmed 50+ years I would be more than happy to say it was genuine (provided the weight could be confirmed to 2 decimal places and it "rings" as silver). MOST fakes are relatively modern and the earlier ones tend to be poorer quality copies (1905 is a fairly common older type fake and is usually a decent quality).

Not much I can say Peter. It's your loss and your pain, nobody else can ease that burden for you. If you want somebody to talk to my number is easy to find on the web. John.

Double Florins and brass Threepences are relatively easy to complete in GVF to UNC grades if you like complete runs (other than the patterns of course, oh and the 1937 eddy VIII).

Coin Values
argentumandcoins replied to richtips86's topic in British Coin Related Discussions & Enquiries
That is quite a subjective question, as already stated by Rob. Lower grade 1905 halfcrowns and shillings seem to be down in price in the salerooms from 2 or 3 years ago. Does that make them a good longterm investment or have they settled at a more realistic price? If your question is more of an investment type conundrum the old advice is the best, buy quality or rarity but preferably combine both! -
Maundy v Currency
argentumandcoins replied to DaveG38's topic in British Coin Related Discussions & Enquiries
The only tell is the surfaces Dave. Maundy coins are usually prooflike in appearance, although to be fair the early currency strikes can be as well. -
I would definitely be interested in the Queens' necklace. Is there any provenance with it? Has it been worn during any official engagements? Can it be tied to any official portraits or photographs?

A worthless coin ;-) -
No, it's a scrapper I'm afraid.

Yes it is real but the reverse has been machined off.

French States; Orange 1642 Double Tournois in copper. Looks like 2 over 0?

I don't know if Chris sells them (drop him an email to check). I merely meant that forum members should try Chris first as he is generous enough to give us this fantastic resource and his time without asking anything in return.

Alternatively you could shop via your host and click onto the predecimal shop!

cgs "variety"
argentumandcoins replied to Sword's topic in British Coin Related Discussions & Enquiries
CGS "varieties" are mainly just CGS trying to bump prices methinks! A different die pairing, error, corrected error etc are all true varieties but die fill in my opinion is not a variety. -
ESC 6th EDITION
argentumandcoins replied to Rob's topic in British Coin Related Discussions & Enquiries
Dave, football (like politics) should be left off a coin forum as Chris may give me a red card for my language if I start to vent my spleen about the absolute FROMAGE disgraceful shower of FLAMIN' sugar at The Toon................... -
ESC 6th EDITION
argentumandcoins replied to Rob's topic in British Coin Related Discussions & Enquiries
As it is a Spink book I doubt the pictures will be up to much! Their latest auction catalogue is an absolute disgrace with coins incorrectly described, incorrectly identified and lotted up as if a 2 year old with a bag of crayons was responsible! -
I have just completed a survey on ebay and 89.93% of coins grade as "UNC L@@K VERY RARE" with the remainder being anything from accurately graded to forgeries......I was tempted to examine the 89.93% to try and discern what UNC actually is but the first worn VERY RARE 1967 Penny stopped the project just as it was about to get off the ground!

I emailed him back Peter and after some backwards and forwards emails I managed to get a good discounted rate on electrickery supply....

The tw*t keeps emailing me as well. I was tempted by his latest offer.....
