Why has the numpty dipped it? He has spoilt a nice key date coin. because dipping on ebay can double your money

Many years ago we had a couple of cats, at the time they were young cats and one Christmas one of them apparently tried a bit of the tinsel from the tree. Anyway next day this cat was seen walking around with about 2 inches of the tinsel hanging out of its arse. I didn't dare pull it in case there was still a foot of it still in there. The funniest thing though was not the cat walking around looking done up for Christmas but the phone conversation with the vets, trying to describe the symptoms with tears running down my face and the roars of laughter from the receptionist on the other end of the phone. :lol:

The lion seems to have had a face job too. Any thoughts on that? But who drills a hole in a 1905 shilling? There's a potentially interesting story to that I imagine. The shilling looks genuine enough - so it's not someone drilling a copy. And the hole is left rough, still even had the burr on it on the obverse side? If it had been drilled to go on a necklace, wouldn't they have cleared the burr off it - through use you might imagine the burr would be smoothed away and the edge of the hole on the reverse side would not be as sharp as it appears in the photo. I have no reason to believe that it's not genuine and from the wear it has seen a reasonable amount of circulation before it was drilled. Of course who ever drilled it did not appreciate that it was a rare coin and probably picked it for its date, likely a birth year. The hole does look very sharp on the photo so it would make you wonder if it was ever put on a chain, perhaps the recipient wasn't too impressed by being given an old shilling to hang around their neck. Anyway I think the nose is still kosher but looks better due to the toning it has received, I'm sure it had been cleaned in the past as it was a bit bright for a 100 year old coin.

Or just sellotape the raw coin to the inside of the envelope. Oh the joys of ebay.

I have about 1000 coins in my collection of which about a dozen were obtained slabbed, all have been broken out, one being a top pop. I just don't see the hoards of slabbed coins here in the UK. They are still in the minority. If you said 5% of coins here in the UK were slabbed I would be shocked.

I know what I'll do, I'll tack 3 rare coins and make them even more valuable by gold plating them. What a plonker

Best way to sell them seems to be dip them (details of how to: available on WWWeb near U or UFraud) so they are shiny bright,brighter the better, overstate the grade, or make no statement of grade but pretend they were left to you by dear grandpapa and you have no idea what they are and that someone told you that they are in fact coins¡ - and get them on our favourite auction site dear old Ebay at 99p starting price for each with "no reserve", profess no knowledge and exhort buyers to make their own mind up. Did I miss anything? Yes, you need to get WOW or RARE into the title, better still both.

Yes but it's getting too big to find them. As a seller I'd be pretty p*$$ed if much of my stuff slipped under the radar.

Ah, but is yours slabbed? There's a whole can of worms right there, Gary! At the end of the day we're coin collectors, not platic collectors. A slab doesn't make a £1 coin any more than a £1 coin in a slab! I've only got one slab - it's a 1928 silver 3d, which I'd grade at VF+. PCGS MS64! So, instantly, there goes any incentive I might have to crack it out, as raw, it'll still only be a VF+. When the time comes to sell it, the best I'll be able to say, to cover myself and preempt the inevitable disappointment from the buyer: "slab says MS64 but please make sure you're happy with the grade of the coin, rather than the grade on the label". So I become as guilty as London Coins, and so the slippery slope begins... A little while back on an American forum it was being discussed that it was quite acceptable to pay $400 for a high grade slabbed 1934 penny. The idea of buying the same coin raw for a quarter of that was completely abhorrent to them.

Suppose I'd better come clean

The repair was done by a guy in the States called Allen Stockton. It cost $100 which included the return shipping. The time scale was very long due to unforeseen circumstances. It was originally estimated to be 2-3 months but took 18 in the end.

It's good isn't it. I can just make out the repair to the reverse but obverse is undetectable.

I don't know, could be useful for keeping the old tadpoles in check on a Saturday night out.

Would'nt like to lick it though I'm struggling to read the denomination on the Mercury coin. Can't wait for the Uranium and Plutonium. I wonder if you will be able to keep them at home. Probably keep getting EDF knocking on the door to see if they can borrow it.

If you alone have seen 2-3 then there must be MANY more than the "two known" which they claim! If the estimate is based on that spurious claim, then they are being a bit naughty. That's the catch/beauty of TPGs. Once you build credibility, then your word becomes gospel. It's in their interest to build a myth whereby they are the definitive arbitor of the total numbers extant. That's why the 1901 penny slabbed MS66 made $600. My example, which may or may not have made that grade or even exceeded it cost me £2.21. Do I care? All of these populations require a several decades long due diligence period. Find a rarity or a previously undiscovered variety and then suddenly the whole world has one. As I have no idea of the scarcity I have mine valued in my collection for £18, I paid £12.38 including postage. Perhaps I should get it slabbed and sell quick to catch the crest of the wave. I've also got the unconfirmed Scotish shilling. I think I'll give CCS a ring to see what it would cost to have them slabbed

Until cleaning coin becomes universally accepted. At the end of the day a cleaned coin is still a coin and if not abraded away still just as good. Personally I like to see coins turned into bookmark and enameled. That completely removes them from the circulation pool.

I've bought 2 of these LT's in the past on eBay auction, and was very pleased with the purchase price on both occasions. If this helps, I have sold one before on BIN & BO and was also very pleased with the outcome! It really all hinges on the quality of the images you can get onto eBay! Get links in the description to photobucket if you have to, just get the viewer an easy way to see a quality image! Don't do that 'I can send pictures' thing, that should be in Paulus's Room 101! So, not auction IMO, a 30-day BIN or BIN & BO IMHO. Everyone has very different views on this, to each his/her own! I see were you are coming from. I had also considered an auction with a highish reserve, then if under but close take the highest bidder. I do have interest in this coin but I've no idea what it's worth? Perhaps any dealer types could pm me their thoughts. I personally always run a mile when I see reserve not met on listings. I'd go bin & BO for this one! There aren't generally that many going through eBay, so you will get some interest for certain. I notice a seller on ebay has an example, a very nice one at that, on for BIN £750 A bit on the high side I would say as Spinks only quote £400 UNC/BU. Very tempting to put mine on for say BIN £300 to see if I get a bite.

I have found that in general the crowns from the proof set tend to have a bit of frosting whereas the individually issued crowns are just shiny

Funny you should say, no I don't have a spare, but I wasn't aware of the round cornered 49 until about 3 weeks before I found one. I'd had the sharp for a long time. If I were to guess I'd say the sharp is the more common. The reason being that the sharp had already been introduce the previous year so they were probably using up an old spare collar to finish the run.

So a question for you all. I'm about to have a clear out and wonder how you would sell this.

I think the way ahead for when I sell my collection is to slab the whole lot and put into a US action, Slabbed to raw prices look to be about 4 to 1.
