  1. Just look at this beauty, but would you dare bid on it. Could you ever tell if its genuin without a lot of close looking. What would you look for http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vie...mMakeTrack=true
  2. The spaces have been removed from my post there should be a large space between the D and U also ANNO and REGNI
  3. You also have a 1934 crown up for sale on ebay -- one of the nicest I've seen. 1934 Crown Must be worth a straight swap for my one
  4. The one in the opening post reads D UTAMEN * ANNO REGNI XXY * So it has missing text which is also incorrectly spaced. Would anyone like to guess just how many of these there are around. Out of a mintage of 714 thousand it would have to be pretty sloppy quality control for there to be more than a few tens or so.
  5. I fully agree about the accurancy of rarity figures as they are largely based on guestimates and are often only attributed to mint condition examples. The biggest problem is that rare examples have been hoared since they were minted wereas the general currency has been largely removed/remelted or plain lost. So any scarce coin like the 46 3ds, 53 penny etc probaly out number coins that were as common as muck at one time. Regading the 1935 crown, Rayner rates both the common crown with edge error and the proof as R6. Spink rates the common as Extremely rare although gives a value for the proof. Davies gives a mention of both plus a 1982 value. Would I be correct in assuming that every error is likely to be different in the missing or misplace text, which I assume would be dependent on how it jumped in the edge rolling process Gary
  6. So Rob, are you saying that the value of the 1933 penny is more due to it's kudos built up over the years and not it's out and out rarity. Freeman rates it as R18. Looking through Freeman you find many R18s so if the 1933 penny were to be defaced its pre-eminent position would likely just be taken by some other rare coin such as the worthless 1935 crown picture in the original post which Rayner rates as R6, that's equivelent to a Freeman R19
  7. Oh well I'll go and get the brasso then, that will make it glint. Just a hypothetical question. The 1933 penny is worth £30-40,000. The owner likes to keep his coins nice and shiny. As there is only one know in private hands would a drop of brasso actually make much difference in its value. Discuss. Gary
  8. A known fake went at auction recently for if I remember correctly about £250.
  9. 3000 coins is alot of coins. Dates and condition are very important. If its a collection in date order with good conditions it could be worth serious money. A better idea of what you have would be helpful. Gary
  10. Don't you just hate it when you spend a lot of money on a coin only to find you already have one and have miscatalogued it. So. Ebay here we come. Could someone please suggest a value and grade, I put it at about good fine. Bye the way its a 3+D which Freeman gives as rare.
  11. There were plenty of penny coins minted in the 1940s, ranging from 14 million in 1949 to 80 million in 1945. You are probably thinking of the 1933 penny which I believe is now thought to be as many as about 12.
  12. Obv. 3 D of DEI to gap, Rev. C L of HALF to gap (Common) Obv. 3 D of DEI to gap, Rev. D L of HALF to bead (Rare) Obv. 4 D of DEI to bead, Rev. C L of HALF to gap (V. Rare) Obv. 4 D of DEI to bead, Rev. D L of HALF to bead (Scarce)
  13. Oh well, someones taken the plunge.
  14. "PS what is the going rate for a forgery?...collectable in their own right. " A good one must be the best part of £200. There is a bit of wear on this one, the I and P are getting weak. I wonder if he bought it and found it to be dodgy so is sticking it out on ebay to see if he can recoup. Must go for £1500-2000 or everyone will stay well clear. I,m not tempted yet. I'd want too get it checked out before I would part with more than £100 on the off chance. Gary
  15. Hi just been drooling over this wondered if some one could give me a grade and value before I do something dum.

    Toning

I'm sure I've got some gunk somewere Something I've tried on silver is a product used in the electronics industry called aquaclean which is a foam cleaner. It seems to clean with out inducing a shine as no rubbing is required. Although nothing looks worst than a very worn coin that is clean because worn coin should not look too clean.

    1902 Matte Maundy 2,3 &4d

I thought I'd try these on here before they go on ebay. I'm willing to split them so I'm thinking £20 each or £50 for the three.
  18. I'm into 1900 to 1970 and only missing 1903 and 1905. I'm starting to sort out the different types now that I have a copy of Davies. Davies quotes a 1911 proof with beveled edge, does anyone know what to look for. The other noticable absence from my collection is the 1926 with the colons missing.
  19. Walking away, I was thinking about GF. As these babies are hard to come by in anything better than worn flat I was trying get a bit better than GF. VF would have made me more interested but the P and I are about gone. I saw one a auction slightly worse than this go for £180. I'm sure it would go for more on ebay. The guy wants a best offer around $999 Perhaps I'll insult him and offer $300.
