  1. My crown collection is starting to fill out nicely and was wondering if anyone knows of a site where i can see pictures of the more unobtainable crowns such as the frosted proofs. They are mentioned in spinks but no pictures
  2. Hi Chris, yes I saw the 1951 but the problem is, without knowing what one looks like how would I know its the real thing? and they tend to be expensive
  3. Hi, is there a reference anywhere that lists the mintage of GB coins. Spinks list the occassional date. Many years ago I had a set of "check your change" booklets which where very useful. Is there anything available now.
  4. I have just recieved my 1st slabbed coin today, a nice 1902 low tide penny M63 for $50 hope I didn't pay too much I've also just ordered for Christmas a nice wood coin cabinet to display my collection in date and type order. My question. As my recent acquision is slabbed would I devalue it by prizing the little darling apart so that it can take its rightfull position in the new cabinet.
  5. As the duty is payable to the posty here in the UK he obviously cant argue. You have to pay the duty, incorrect or not then reclaim it from customs. IIRC their Coventry office.
  6. Not to sure if this is the correct place to put this topic but here goes. What is involved in importing coins into the UK from the states. Especially high value stuff. Import duty, VAT etc.

    1843 half farthing

I understood that cleaning with lighter fuel was supposed to do the trick. If you try it let us know if it works.
  8. To get a definitive answer I phoned the customs people today and was very pleased with the answer. Coins are art and collectables so aslong as they are not legal tender attrack zero import duty and VAT at 5%. Bit of a result The clasification code to be entered on the customs declaration is 9705000090
  9. Ok so is there a way of working out a worst case, $500 or $1000. Are there limits allowences etc
  10. After collecting coins for about 35 years well 35 years ago and recently, (I'm kicking myself for missing that 1936 Crown ) I've since a youngster wanted a nice cabinet to keep my collection in, so I've decided its time and am currently drooling over a Peter Nicols Crozier. My question is, does keeping coins in a more open environment like a cabinet have any detrimental effects compared to a plactic album. Does keeping them in capsuls in a cabinet have any merit.
  11. I have noticed on a certain auction web site lately and have bought a couple possibly to my cost several farthing that are bright even BU of EdV11 vintage or pre 1918 GV. Is it likely that someone has stripped these or are the bright ones also okay.
  12. Yes the theft issue had crossed my mind but the collection has been stuck a box in the back of a wardrobe for the last how many years so I though it was about time to do something. There is always a descrete chain to a bolt in the floor
  13. I notice in spinks that there are two 1920 florins, deeply engraved or shallow cut. I'm sure with one of each side by side the difference would be quite plain to see, but with a singe example is there a way of tell which one I have?
  14. Oh well, I'll open my first post with a dumb question. What am I looking for?
