Shillings & Florins in circ. after 1971
1949threepence replied to Viccy Penny's topic in British Coin Related Discussions & Enquiries
I was a child in the 1980's and it didn't puzzle me. Not exactly rocket science, even at a very young age, to know that the two same sized coins meant the same amount, 5p and 10p - and it was explained to me what the distinction was, and the history behind them as well as the word "new", both by my parents and (at some point) at school. You only need to have something like that explained to you once, and it sticks for all time. It didn't actually make any difference to anybody, as I recall. Everybody knew what they were and it wasn't an issue. Not even a talking point. It may have confused some foreigners, possibly, but I'm sure they would soon have learnt what they were. By the way, what you quoted wasn't strictly accurate. He actually said: "However tourists and children were sometimes confused by these strange pre-decimal remnants" -
Almost incredible that they would post their own video showing that. Is it ignorance, arrogance or stupidity?

So, Brexit....What's happening?

I bet they will. Don't forget, we will be the ones at the begging bowl and they will be calling the tune. They're already peed off with us - understandably - so why wouldn't they make an article 50 extension difficult? They never wanted us to leave in the first place and you can be sure that they will only agree to a long extension, possibly to the end of 2021, with added strings. Wait and see. Great result. Didn't expect them to win at the Allianz to be honest. Very very few do. But Liverpool do have an exceptional team and a highly driven manager. Just like Man City, actually, and arguably the other two as well. Who, for instance, would have expected Man U to come back from a 2:0 home leg defeat? That means 4 English teams in the quarters. -

That gives remain an unfair advantage. If you include remain in a second referendum, then the remain vote from 2016 will be broadly the same, but the leave vote will be split between the other two options. Given that we've already voted by a majority to leave, it should be two options only. The deal or leave with no deal. -

Yep, democratic principles have been sold down the river, and the wishes of the electorate, trashed. In fairness to May, she has worked tirelessly to push Brexit through, but has sadly failed due to treacherous elements in her own party, the intransigent bigoted DUP, and the Labour party. Corbyn full well knows that there is nothing in the current deal which Labour disagrees with, yet he deliberately goes against it as he puts his own self interest ahead of the country's. The more I see of this guy, the more I dislike him. He's also a proven liar as he did mouth "stupid woman" in December, If he'd said "people" his lips would have touched twice, and they only touched once. Incidentally, an extension to article 50 is not a foregone conclusion. May will have to go back to the EU, cap in hand, to request beg for this, and they are likely to exact a heavy humiliating price for us to get it. -

Parliament has shafted the country because they can't agree on anything. As the can has continually been kicked down the road, business is suffering, we are likely to see further transfers of business elsewhere, with consequential loss of employment, and the constant all pervading uncertainty which we are all enduring at the moment. May's deal isn't perfect, but life rarely is. It's all we're going to get from the EU. Although I suspect that many MP's, ministers and shadow ministers thought they would eventually dance to our tune. Arrogant beyond all belief. -

Understandable. If there is a general election, imminently, I won't even bother voting. Parliament has absolutely shafted the country (both sides). I'd lay odds that many others feel the same as me. If there's a second referendum, you can absolutely guarantee that they won't even reach agreement on the sodding question framework. -

Worse, to be honest. She looked deathly pale and had a really set angry look. Watch the footage if you get a chance. -

Beggars belief, doesn't it. Even more incredible that someone fell for it. -

Sounds like there might be a meaningful breakthrough regarding the backstop. Nearest thing to an actual legal re-write that we could get. Maybe, just maybe, assuming not too many pig headed arrogant brexiters in parliament, this deal might just get through. Fingers crossed. -

That's more like it !!! -
Yes, well short of a fingerprint belonging to one of their staff appearing on a coin, it would be pretty much impossible to prove a case against them.
-
Is it me missing something very obvious, or is there a photo of only one of the 15 coins in that link?
-
Yes, they've got to say that as it could always be alleged (but never proved) that pre slabbing surface contamination was down to them, whilst the coin was in their offices.
-
Are they saying, though, that such deteriorations as do appear post slabbing, are due to changes that were initiated prior to slabbing? For example, it can take months for a carbon spot to appear, after a tiny drop of saliva lands on a coin surface.

I just feel sorry for whoever bought it. They've been ripped off. I see it went from Glendinnings in 1999 for £430, and even that was about 8 times too much in itself (in my opinion). -

Matt proof? really? Thoughts? I must admit, it certainly doesn't look like a proof to me. But got good provenance and went for £2600 hammer. Doesn't look as though there's much to distinguish it from a normal currency strike. ETA: Sorry, meant to post this in the "More Pennies" thread. 06/03/2016 Auction 152 English Coins Lot 2472 Penny 1908 Matt Proof, as Freeman 167 dies 2+D, About as struck with subdued lustre, some small spots on either side, purchased from Glendinings 28/7/1999 hammer price £430, we note an example in a 2014 US auction Realised $8000 More coins like this £2,600 -
Had to laugh at this statement of the blindingly obvious from him:- Well, no shit Sherlock With e bay you have to take personal responsibility for your own actions in those shark infested waters. It really is no use expecting anyone else to nursemaid you through, including e bay themselves who are not interested, and wouldn't have the expertise if they were.

The situation is too farcical to even laugh at. Things bad both sides of the pond, Bob.
