  1. Some very good points above, Dave. I wonder if the ability to afford high end coins comes from a combination of those who still have money and secure jobs/retired with a good income, and the speculative sound investment angle. Incidentally, there's a series of high quality buns on e bay being offered by someone, and the location is Germany. It's not you is it ?
  2. All valid points above, IMO. Although I don't blame Gordon Brown for the global banking crisis, I do believe New Lab compounded the problem from the UK's point of view by profligate and irresponsible spending whilst in office. In particular a bloated public sector. Now the party's over and the price has to be paid. That said, it does appear that once again it is the "little people" who take the brunt of the punishment in the form of probably forthcoming mass public sector redundancies, reduced pension rights, widespread cuts in benefits and health provisions etc, whilst the wan....err, sorry, bankers, provocatively continue to be paid obscenely high bonuses. Yes, incredibly, it's still going on even now. I would like to know what steps are being taken to ensure that bail out money for banks is going to be paid back to the treasury ~ something that there appears to be a curious silence about at the moment. Moreover, mass redundancies in the public sector, combined with lack of recruitment following natural wastage, will do nothing to stimulate demand led recovery in the economy, if the private sector is unable to take up the slack.

    Ebay's Worst Offerings

Blimey. Say what you like about the seller formerly known as "gg..something or other", but he does get 'em in. £411 with 4 days to go... Superb isn't it. I forecast near £2k. Tell you what, if I had the cash, I'd be in there saying, "come to Daddy"

If Part 2 is consistent with Part 1, the coins should be available for viewing on the CC website by the last day of this month.

    1882 London Mint penny ?

Yes, but only to say I have one from each date minted. Pretty much sorted 1968 - 1983 in Unc. They're pretty cheap, so keeps me occupied while waiting for new coins for the main collection [C20th date sets of all denoms] (complete back to 1929 in gEF or better for all, back to 1910 for 1d and 2/6!). I cannot, however, find 1981 10p in Unc for love nor money!! Nowhere have I ever seen any offered (mintage just over 3m). That's interesting. I just looked in e bay uk, and clicked through to decimal 10p's, which can be sorted by year. 1981 is one of only two years since 1968 where there is not at least one offered for sale. The other being 1978. Obviously some of the other years offered ~ 1972 for example ~ will be proofs.

    1882 London Mint penny ?

So if we took £20 in sovereigns back to 1869, would we get value exchanging for current bronze or silver? the chances of finding anything scarce would be low - no 1869 pennies, probably the majority would be 1862/3 So let's think in reverse, what current circulation coins would you salt away for your great grandchildren? David Only, as already documented, the £2.00 coins with a mintage of less than 1 million. There are also some old style 50p's I wouldn't mind, like the 1992 single market. The mintage of many of the rest, is so astronomic and their presence so ubiquitous, that they are of no interest ~ to me at any rate

    1882 London Mint penny ?

Not Gospel of course, new varieties are being found all the time If 1949 has this in hand then close microscopic examination of that smudge under the date is needed. If he is thinking of purchase then alarm bells should ring if anything over the standard price for an 1882H is asked for David Theoretically, Vicky Silver is right. But I wouldn't go for this coin as I think it's been deliberately tooled by someone at some point. Realistically, it's the only explanation. It would also account for the apparent smudging under the date.

    1882 London Mint penny ?

I've blown up your picture and I see a slight smudge wher the H would be I don't have the books next to me. seem to recall 1882 no H has a different die combination, so Hi res scans both sides please Fingers crossed for you! David Looks like F12 to me, as the eye is quite palpably closer to the bridge of the nose on F11, which the 1882 without a H is solely described as being. So either tooled, or the photo does not show up the H for whatever reason. Definitely an 1882H and I got all over excited for nothing. Sorry for the fuss, people.

    1882 London Mint penny ?

There's certainly a mark of some description under the date. But whether this is co-incidental slight staining or evidence of tooling, is difficult to say. I certainly can't see an "H".

    Fake or not?

Yeah, Hi Dave. Hope you're keeping well

    Isn't that just sods law

Luck of the draw ~ good for him. I'd probably find a few old tin cans.
  14. The man is a complete twat. With a name like styx collectables, it is entirely appropriate that he likes holes. You've got to hand it to him though:- I've heard spin before, but that recommendation of holes in coins, takes it to a whole new level !!!

    Gap Filler

Definitely looks fake to me. I wouldn't go anywhere near it.
  16. I'm not sure about that, but if you look at the bids, there was what looks like some shill bidding yesterday ~ although the eventual winner made their snipe on the 5th. I definitely agree with you about the 1868.

    ebay sniping programmes

My maximum snipe is the amount I would happily pay....anything less is a bonus. Sensible Peter. I usually go to a bit above what I think will be the maximum snipe from elsewhere. For example, if the current bid is £40 and the approximate value of the coin is £75, then I might bid £100. Typically, I might then get it for £55 to £60.

Mind, you would be an idiot to snipe 2,200% of the actual value

You're only an idiot when you get burnt. All other times you're a smart, high risk operator with a successful track record Down to perception & I've got about 20 successful hits and no burns Just so

    Stevenage FC

Well, this has been addressed already, but as an aside, I would agree that you're not going to get too many coin collectors in the average football ground. I'm an Ipswich Town supporter by the way ~ cultivated by my upbringing in Essex. That makes 2 of us Keano COYB Just seen this ~ well said, Peter !!! Hopefully under Roy Keane, the blues should come on.

I've done that, Colin. On one occasion I was disappointed to have missed out on a really good coin because I got distracted by something on the telly, and forgot to bid. When I realised what was happening, the time had gone and the bidding had ended. Easily done, and quite recently my concentration again wandered, and I made the bid just in time ~ dead on the end time of 19:24:23 !!! It is a strategy that has 100% worked for me up to now, and I have obtained some great coins at bargain basement prices, as a result. If at some point I do lose out in the way Peck suggests, then I'll take the hit and view it as an occupational hazard, more than made up for by all the previous successes.
  22. I must get myself a Peck as soon as I can afford one. There are just two available on Amazon, both later editions than the original offered by argentum, and both more expensive.
  23. Whilst I can understand the annoyance that cartoon might cause, banning it would really be censorship. It's on trivia like this, that the concept of political correctness lends itself to ridicule. Yes. If the economic conditions had been more favourable in Germany post World War 1, Hitler would have been seen for the psycho nutter he was, and the fascist movement would never have emerged in any meaningful way.
  24. "Die Schwarze Shande" meaning "the black disgrace". Without any background knowledge the meaning is obscure, but given that after the first world war, France did treat Germans in the now French occupied areas of former Germany, such as Alsace Lorraine, quite badly, it becomes slightly clearer. One can only speculate that black troops were used in this process, and therefore the racist angle becomes more obvious. Presumably the maiden tied to the phallic symbol, is somehow meant to represent the alleged sexual abuse of German women by such troops ? I don't know. Very, very nasty, nevertheless.

That works fine until the day your snipe just beats another using the same strategy. Then you find yourself having to pay the "stupidly high price" It's never happened yet, so it's a chance I'll continue to take. That said, I have known others to bid lower than the previous snipe, within a few seconds of my bid. I know I'll probably get stung at some point, but it's worth the risk.
