A few weeks ago, we were talking about the 1882 F114, with a possible 2/1. One sold yesterday, and to me, remains of the one is visible underneath the 2. take a look

DNW changing names.....?
1949threepence replied to 1949threepence's topic in British Coin Related Discussions & Enquiries
I can't find a search tab to begin with. Usually they're at the top of the page with a magnifying glass next to them, and a little slot for text to be added. Am I missing something very obvious? -
DNW changing names.....?

Still no search facility though (unless incredibly well concealed). Although interestingly some tips on using the apparently non existent search facility. -
You would indeed. It also has to be said that mistakes like these will gradually undermine the company's reputation.

DNW changing names.....?
1949threepence replied to 1949threepence's topic in British Coin Related Discussions & Enquiries
Are you meaning specifically matt specimens and matt proofs, or the difference generally between specimen and proof? If the former, I'm not entirely sure. If the latter, I believe that proofs are produced from specially made highly polished dies, such that the fields of coins so produced are very reflective when rotated through the angles - although maybe not, as the name would imply, with "matt" proofs. Proofs are generally minted for re-sale to the public. Specimens, conversely and as far as I can tell, seem to be minted for commercial purposes - maybe testing the die. Or perhaps to be used as superior examples, or presentation to various relatively high ranking individuals. At which point there might be some crossover with the so called "VIP proofs". You might find the following description from the sale of the Copthorne collection F74, 1874H "specimen, of some use:- Specimens also seem to crossover with "early strikes" - hence "specimen or early strike", the seller has no way of knowing which, or if either. I suspect there's a lot of past detail that we will never be privy to. -
That raises an interesting point. We know it's not the only error/omission from NGC - for example I bought a slabbed "1826 GB penny" last year, with no reference to the fact it was thin line down saltire. There have been others. Presumably their lack of available technical expertise, or just not bothering to check, has led them to simply accept the customer's assertion that the 1926 penny was ME. Might be a mistake on the customer's part, compounded by NGC. Or, more worryingly, it could be a cynical attempt (successful, if so) by someone to fool NGC, and thus, by further extension, trick a subsequent buyer of the slabbed coin into thinking it was something else, with the apparent assurance of the NGC marking, thus lowering the potential buyer's guard.

Looks like somebody's been in contact with the seller. This is now added to the description:-
-
No, definitely not an ME. The lower colon dot after GRA should be virtually touching the A. Plus other indicators not present.

@secret santa - Richard, great article by you, about the dot pennies, in the June edition of Coin News. Really interesting and well worth a read. In fact it was so good, I read it more than once. Thanks very much indeed.

The Coinery signature sale auction

Were any of the lots of interest to members here? Some quite nice interesting offerings, mostly going within estimate parameters. I got one - an example I've wanted for some time. @The Coinery is a member here. It's Guy Fie who has his own, largely internet based, coin dealership. Link to auction offerings and hammer prices -

The only evidence we've got is what you tell us, which isn't factual until proven with independently verifiable examples. Until that point it remains anecdotal or hearsay. Have you spoken to fellow member Guy about this issue, and mentioned that you've been talking about the alleged malpractice of his alleged business partners on here? As far as Atlas numismatics and Baldwins, the evidence was concrete, obvious, unarguable and there for all to see. -

I can't do much with that one either. Of course, it's not on you tube. It's embedded in facebook. That may be the reason it's caused issues. The ordinary you tube video you should have no problem posting direct in picture form. -

Start the video playing on you tube and right click anywhere on the video itself. Then left click on "copy video URL". Then to post here, right click on the post and click "paste" from the menu. The wording of the link will show for a few seconds, then change to the actual video picture. More fiddly on a mobile device. -

What do you expect, coming on here over many years, bad mouthing everyone in sight and automatically expecting us all to believe what you assert, without hearing a word by way of defence, from those people you accuse? The only common denominator is you. -

I've received my coin this morning, and I'm very, very pleased with it. That's the extent of my interest. The rest of it is your concern, not mine. -

I wouldn't mind betting though, that some of the coins offered would have fetched even more if they'd been offered through a major auction house, rather than Easy Live auction. Watching the auction live, it was obvious that the number of bids for some coins, was nowhere near what they would have been with DNW (Noonans), for example. -

Not sure about the live technicalities Bruce. Not listened in to one of their auctions since October last year. I agree with you about rising coin prices though. There's also a bit of a strange phenomenon emerging whereby you can get a given coin for a lower price when it's been sitting with a dealer at the same unaltered price for a few years, than you can if that same coin were to offered at an auction house. Especially with added buyer's premium. -

Thanks for the extra detail. To be honest, as long as I get my coin, I don't give two hoots either way who runs it. -

I had a feeling that the situation of a lot of female refugees with kids, being housed with British families, would end in tears for many. For one reason or another.............

Penny Acquisition of the week

Really pleased to have obtained this ex Copthorne collection 1853 copper proof. You don't see many copper proofs from the Victoria era, so when this one cropped up, with provenance, I decided to snap it up.
