    Royal Maundy

So once you're 'appointed' as a recipient, you continue to receive it every year subsequently ?
  2. Ah So. Well, there's a strong chance that that is a wrong 'un. The vast majority of the forged £1 coins seem to come from Ulster and Scotland - and as you know, this one celebrates Macneills bridge on the Belfast to Dublin railway. Without seeing it of course, it is hard to be definitive, but I'd say it's more than likely you have a poorly struck fake there. Put it into a vending machine and see how you get on....
  3. Hello David and welcome. Sounds a little bit like a clogged die perhaps. Any chance of a photo ?

    a few newbie questions

I did type a horrible response, but then I deleted it - he'll notice in a minute I thought. Humility is very attractive, there should be more of it. So, where are the pictures man ?
  5. Nice. IME it's very difficult to macro photograph gold coins square on, there's always too much reflection. If you tilt it, to avoid the glare, there's always a part of the coin not quite in focus. I hate to admit, but scans are often more useful with gold Did you say what grade you bought it as, I can't remember ? Rgds.

    Heads Up

Just noticed the stolen goods section on the BNTA website. Thought it might be appropriate to draw members attention to it ? http://www.bnta.net/stolen_goods.php

    a few newbie questions

Well, it's always better to post pictures, but since I'm on form tonight (ahem) I'll query whether you really mean William II (1087-1100) and if you do, how you know they are coins of his ? If they are, then of course they are of interest, but I can't help thinking that what you might have (without pictures remember) are maundy coins of William IV. Either way, the answer is yes, they are of interest, but enough of me, show us the goods....

Badly Pressed 2009, 20p or Fake

Of course. And, to make matters worse, I've bought stuff of her in the past as well. Which rather makes me look a donkey doesn't it. Bray.

Badly Pressed 2009, 20p or Fake

No, learn something every day. It's obviously very difficult to tell without seeing it. It might have some value to someone if it can be proven that it's a genuine mint mistake/oddity rather than a coin which has been machined in some way. The only sure fire way to make progress is to show it to a dealer and ask his opinion (I almost typed his/her then and then I thought is there a single female dealer in the hobby ? Don't believe I've met one..) Heres a link to the BNTA website, from which you ought to be able to find a dealer close to you. http://www.bnta.net/index.php Hope that helps, best of luck.

    Fine Work?

Difficult to see really, it's such a dark photo. Maybe someone tried to straighten it, it broke and they've 'heat treated' it back together ? Not suggesting the seller has done this of course, but it doesn't look a 'well' coin does it.
  11. There was a bit of a hoo ha about it, a good old fashioned British tantrum about machines taking away skilled workers jobs. Partly to do with that and partly to do with the fact that it was a Frenchman Peter Blondeau who was championing milled coinage. As you know Charles II produced the first milled coins to see proper circulation, a large part of the motivation for doing that was to remove the coins of the hated Commonwealth fron circulation, so we got them in the end.
  12. Stagnant is a good word. Judging by the dealers lists that I monitor, coins do not seem to be flying off the shelves. Perhaps Mat's inability to shift his C1 Crown is further evidence of this ? You would like to think that there will be a price correction sometime, some prices are just plain barmy. What can we do to precipitate a price crash ? Can we use forum power to start one off

Hmm, I'm thinking that somebody was bore and has filed the corners ? What does the rim look like, any evidence of this ?

    Fine Work?

Well, whatever was in his/her mind when describing it, £900 seems a little ambitious. I'm wondering if the metal flaw that runs down the middle is due to it having been straightened at some point ?

    What coins do you collect

Certainly got me started. It is over 14 years old now, hard to imagine life without it, never mind the internet. Pre internet, if we wanted to chat like this, we would all have had to wear cardigans and convene in a village hall somewhere.

    What coins do you collect

Like most, I've flitted about. I started with silver proof crowns then went onto shillings before diverting to sovereigns. At some point during my sovereign period a unite and some solidi appeared from somewhere, but for the last 3 years I have concentrated solely on uncirculated bronze pennies with as much lustre as possible (90% if possible) I'm pleased to say that I have been very disciplined to date - I had a life moment and realised that scattergun was making me unhappy at some level and that I needed a bit more order, not just in my coin collection either. I got lucky, when I bought most of my sovs, they were for £60/75, the gold price hike helped me out no end. Got stuffed on the unite and solidi though. I sold pretty much everything, bar a few Denari (cos they're pennies really, right?) and a small collection of colonial bronze. There are certainly some coins I miss and regret selling, but what's done is done and I feel a lot happier in my more focussed collecting.
  19. Hello Mate, I see no one has answered yet, so I'll be first. We're online friends right ? And you're expecting a reaction I think; 1. Definite not definate. 2. There is a part of me that doesn't believe you bought it, it's just a photo from the web. 3. You've been told, not by me, that errors and mistrikes have to be accepted by the community to be worth anything. It's unlikely you are going to find a new one - however good you may be. 4. If you still think after the last 3 months that you are going to turn a profit quickly, you need a blow from the fish. 5. I'm sorry to hear you are out of work, I hope you haven't done anything silly with this, admittedly nice sov of the sailor king. Other than that, nice coin, look forward to seeing some pics from hand. Regards as always.
  20. Don't have it either - don't see the need to buy it every year, but I notice that London Coins had one in their sale 6/7th March. Lot 868 VG and estimated at £750-£1250. Quick trip to their website should yield the final hammer price ?
  21. Oh, that one. I was blabbering on about the 2002 £5 coin. Chuck it up on ebay with a 99p start. I find ebay to be very reliable for getting market value if it's a desirable coin. If it's not - well, then who cares anyway, you might as well be shot of it ? My gut feeling is that you'd do well to get face for it, but you never know, only takes two to want it....
  22. Is it a proof or the circulated variety ? I've got one of the 'ordinary' ones and many times have I thought I ought to take that to the post office, but I've never quite summoned up the cojones to do it - seems like a lot of fuss for a fiver. If it's a proof, surely a job for ebay ?

That mental imagery has left me feeling somewhat unwell. He was a curious individual, that's for sure - woner if he'll resurface ?

    CLIMATE CHANGE FOR PRIMATES MATES

Mate, You've been a colourful and entertaining new arrival and it isn't my place to offer advice when it's not being asked for, but posts kind of do have to vaguely relate to coins (and personally I don't mind medals either). I mention this simply because I fear you may already be on a yellow card and it would be a shame to see you take an early bath for a second offence, without a steer on form etc, etc. Best wishes.
