Could You Give Me A Price?
Peckris replied to FiftyPercentSilver's topic in British Coin Related Discussions & Enquiries
If it's genuinely UNC it would be worth somewhere £25 - £30. I sit corrected! I'm quoting the non-eBay price -
If you had to pick one, what would be your favourite portrait?
Peckris replied to Mongo's topic in British Coin Related Discussions & Enquiries
Pistrucci's portrait was actually quite flattering considering what a porker George IV had become - Wyon's is pure fantasy but I bet it pleased the king no end -

As far as cycling and rowing are concerned, it's actually a very clever policy by the Brits first rolled out in Beijing. You target the 'soft' (i.e. not that many people participating worldwide) sports with lots of medals on offer and allocate disproportionate resources to them - result, shedloads of medals. Doesn't explain our three athletics golds though! Although I do have some sympathy with Oscar Wilde on patriotism, it's still nice to see us doing well. That's an interesting point - some sports have lots of medals where others (horse-riding teams for example) have to take part in three separate disciplines over several days, to win one medal. There again, if it wasn't for the athletics tradition, you could argue that running 100m, 200m, 400m, 800m, 1500m, 5000m, 10000m, and a marathon, are the ultimate in lots of medals! Which is why I'm so admiring of events where they have lots of sports in one medal - e.g. decathlon and heptathlon. As for the triathlon, my jaw dropped when I saw what those women achieved : swimming 1.5km freestyle in wetsuits, getting straight out of the water, discarding wetsuits as they went (down boy ), getting onto their bikes and taking part in a 43km race, then parking their bikes and going straight off on a 10km run. Should have been a platinum medal for winning that, with a special medal for everyone just for taking part! There is also the 'ironman' triathlon (not an Olympic event yet): 3.8 km swim, followed by a 180 km bike ride, followed by a full marathon!!!! Ye gods - and the competitors actually survive??? Too right! If someone tries to steal your wind, anything goes

I know it's not exactly the same thing, but I was very glad indeed of Mortgage Protection Insurance when I got made redundant in the 90s.

1901 Farthing Question
Peckris replied to Generic Lad's topic in British Coin Related Discussions & Enquiries
It certainly looks as if it was cleaned in the past (the black streak could be a result of uneven cleaning). However, don't check against your 1896 farthing for mint darkening, as that didn't start until 1897; all 1896 farthings were bright. Bronze coins often go dark when they have started to wear - mint toning is most evident on UNC coins, and has a kind of dark blue/purple sheen. -
Your Fave British Monarch?
Peckris replied to scottishmoney's topic in Nothing whatsoever to do with coins area!
Oh, you can't do this to me, a died in the wool republican! OK you've persuaded me; 1) Alfred the Great - man of great learning and no mean military tactician. 2) Elizabeth I - brilliant tactician and to my mind founder of the modern British state. 3) George IV - because he was so bad, had he lived another 10 years we would have become a republic 170 years ago! Can't argue with that! If we had a LEAST favourite monarch, he'd be near or at the top of my list. Just to give one example : Pistrucci reduced the number of his chins to about three, but he still wasn't satisfied until Wyon produced his 'Adonis bust' ... and the people of Britain looked at their coins and said "Who the hell is that?" -

There was that brief interregnum betwixt the reigns of GV and GVI, aka Walli's husband. Canna say they really reigned. Wasn't even coronated, in fact GVI was coronated when EVIII was supposed to have been. Hmm, if you only count a reign from the coronation, then Her Maj's Diamond Jubbly is not until NEXT year! -

Possibly Richard III - the most misunderstood monarch we ever had, and whose reputation was sealed forever by those Tacky Tudors whose own legitimacy was extremely slender bordering on non-existent!! -

"The" Ukraine is an insurrectionary comment in Ukraine - only pro-Russian uses the article "the". I remember a few years ago, my mother in law got chewed out for saying that. It is okay to speak Russian, we all do in UA, but never say it like "the" Ukraine. At least I have the highest respects for Her Majesty, just not her firstborn. I will stay out like the plaque whence Charles becomes monarch. If he were a long reign, I foresee the final dismantling of a long and formidable monarchy. Hardly likely, given his current age! The words "Edward" and "VII" come to mind for some reason. Mind you, I don't share your antipathy - much as I admire Her Maj, a Goons-loving, environmentally-caring, plant-talking, Camilla-marrying gonk might be quite fun for a year or two -
