Thought of you lot the other day....
Peckris replied to £400 for a Penny ?'s topic in British Coin Related Discussions & Enquiries
Nah - a good fish'nchip supper swilled down with a few oysters, is more her scene (and if she was a true Essex Girl, a few whelks and jellied eels wouldn't go amiss) -

I think it was the historian A L Rowse who persisted in calling her Boadicea long after the version had been discredited. When this was pointed out to him, his response was, 'I would much rather take a woman called Boadicea out to dinner than one called Boudica'. Given her reputation, I wouldn't fancy dining with her however she spelt her name. LOL. Mind you, reputation or no, I'd rather take her (out to dinner) than a pedant like Rowse. -
I absolutely agree with Tom, 100%. Now, once you've got an idea of when certain coins are at the 'bottom' and due to rise ... send me a PM letting me know which, ok?
-
Just come back from holiday, hence no posts for a bit. I would agree, it does look VF to me. Hope you got a decent tan(ner) Derek! Where did you go?
-
I think you mean 2p not 1p !! To me, the supposed scarcity of 1988 £1 coins is something of a myth. The mintage figure is high enough, but perhaps they really ARE scarce. If so does anyone know why?
-
Good luck with that 1983 2p ! If you're serious about starting, then you're quite right that 1911 to 1919 silver is still plentiful in all except the very highest grades. Perhaps concentrate on going for BU versions of the commonest years? (1916 and 1918 for a start). Coins of major issue changes like 1887 silver is also plentiful, and to a lesser extent, 1893. And 1902 is the easiest year of a tricky reign. 1936 is by far the easiest year of George V (go for BU only). Welcome to the hobby!

Yes, it was always Boadicea growing up. Does anybody actually know ? As far as Mumbai is concerned, it has always been Mumbai to the locals. Private soldiers of the empire were notorious for using (not always complimentary) nicknames based on the local pronunciations. Wipers for Ypres is another one which springs to mind. If you follow this link you can see that with the exception of Chennai (Madras) they are mostly pretty faithful attempts and it's probably not even fair to call them renames... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Renaming_of_cities_in_India#Proposed_changes While we're putting money in Jimmy Wales's pockets : -

Not really 1949, a few miles south of Colchester on the coast - right in the middle of the Parachute Regiment's firing ranges. Can be awfully noisy at times. Yeah, I bet it can, 400. Although Colchester is a nice City. The inhabitants weren't saying that after Boudicca paid it an official visit. In fact, they weren't saying ANYTHING seeing how they were all dead or fled. Is it Boudicca or Boadicea ? Never sure I think it's like the difference between Jesus and Joshua - one got more popular quite a while after the other (original). So I'm thinking Boudicca is the older spelling? And therefore more authentic. Not sure how far back Boadicea goes (Victorians? LOL) -
I remember 12 years ago when our local curry house in the Midlands offered a discount card - I can't remember the exact price but I think it was around £20 for 6 months? You could get 2 mains (eat in or takeaway) for the price of 1, so it soon paid for itself (I would go there every week )

Well cleaned! Is that our friend? He gives a new meaning to "cleaning up". Yup it is, so its the bestest coin of that year you'll ever see, until he gets another that is and drops it in the silver dip by accident etc etc etc That one wasn't dipped! Silver dip leaves a dull appearance, but that one has been well and truly polished.

Our Tennis boy did better than ermmmmmm (how many English boys) actually got so far? I believe Mr Murray has done better in his short career than most of your English boys in their entire careers I bet if he won it though he'd be British, but because he's out now he's Scottish You are totally right. And for all I've said, Mandy Urray is the best Brit tennis player since the war, by far. Our boy Tim can't touch him, though he is still loved "on the Hill" even though he is now well and truly over it... What, the Ashes? 2009, 2010 or 2005? Or maybe you meant the Rugby World Cup in 2003? No? Definitely not Linford Christie, you could just come back with Alan "There Weren't Any Americans In Moscow" Wells. Presumably you're not referring to any number of snooker players over 30 years (oops, just remembered, one of them was a Scot!). Or yachtsmen, rowers, cyclists, F1 drivers, horsepersons, etc. Oh wait! I've got it!! You must mean the number of English football teams in the Champions League 1/4 Finals, semi-finals and final, year after year after year...

On the OTHER hand - coins like these are on eBay all the time, so if you managed to get 99c per item, you'd be laughing! -

Welcome to the forum mtwc. I have recently found Warwick to be a lost cause for me and haven't bid for 3 sales now. Their low estimates aren't a problem for me, it's the inexplicable prices that are being achieved on low grade milled crap. I hope you enjoyed the ashes series (both of the last 2) as much as I did ;-) Just for Azda (that's cricket Dave, a game played by gentlemen, oh and Aussies) I'd rather watch Newcastle UTD than cricket, better still, watching paint dry would be more exciting Spoken like a true Scot! By the way, how did your tennis boy get on against the Spaniard?

Small British Coin lot .. What is it worth
Peckris replied to coinmandan's topic in British Coin Related Discussions & Enquiries
Um, let me break this to you gently. If in average condition - metal value. A few of those might be worth a little bit more if in better than average condition : for example if the shillings for 1957 and 1959 are Scottish (single lion upright rather than 3 leopards couchant) and in EF or better they would be worth what we Brits call "a few quid" (literally - nothing to get excited about). Likewise if the two shillings dated in the 50s are in mint condition, they would be worth "a few quid", but I'm guessing they're not! Condition is everything with coins, then rarity, and popularity is also a runner. The only thing that puzzles me is the "Large Cents" - are they pennies? Do they (I'm guessing this might be an itsy-bitsy cluette here) have the words ONE PENNY on the reverse? -
Steady on old chap - the sun's not yet over the yardarm!

Gold plated 1910 penny slabbed by CGS !
Peckris replied to AJWcoins's topic in British Coin Related Discussions & Enquiries
Notice he hasn't actually shown us the CGS label ... Anyway, the coin has been 'basted' - what else do you expect? -
I don't know sidcrampton, but I'd never trust the opinion of someone who's just bought the item! No-one wants to admit any failing in their judgement or purchase...

My collection at a glance
Peckris replied to rasiel's topic in British Coin Related Discussions & Enquiries
Agreed. T reverse is especially gorgeous with the lustre gone only from Britannia, giving a kind of 'frosted' look. But it's not nearly $900-gorgeous. Considering my A/Unc terracotta-finish cost me the princely sum of £25 from Dorset Coins ... i'll stick -
Ebay regular scam/unknowledgeable listings
Peckris replied to Peter's topic in British Coin Related Discussions & Enquiries
I don't think there's a court in the land that would accept that description as anything other than a representation of 'originality', even without a specific statement to the effect. And the metal content is an outright lie. Indeed - replace 'Silver' with pewter, and 'Tudor period' with 1960's (or later!) you get something approaching the truth! I acknowledge what Peter says about caveat emptor, however if that's a 14 year old kid who's saved his (or her!) pocket money for their first big spend, they'll soon abandon numismatics if they get stung like that! Quite. Which makes eBay's dereliction of responsibility all the more irksome. -
unusal 1917 george v penny.
Peckris replied to scampi's topic in British Coin Related Discussions & Enquiries
You're right, I very much doubt the coin would be a fake - who'd fake a 1917 penny? Looking forward to see the enlargement. -

Peckris replied to scampi's topic in British Coin Related Discussions & Enquiries
I'm unsure about the '8'. It definitely looks like an 8, but it's entirely possible that it's an accidental result of the acid damage. Can you take a photo enlargement of the date area, and upload it? As for the ghosting - yes, you're right. It's a common feature on that series of pennies. See my reply here : http://www.predecimal.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=5941&pid=53490&st=0entry53490 -
Would that be like an A+++ seller !!! I'm not sure if it was American or what, but I did see a coin recently advertised as "About GVF+"

@@@@@ Oh yes. Hence the high prices. Roman is very easy by comparison. @@@@@ Mine aren't online except what I've posted in these forums. But, if the Tantalus grid is available to all users, then given time I could upload a representative selection to my own version of the grid. Do you have the URL, where we could get started?
