  1. I'm not at home at the moment to check the exact title and spelling ..but the reference book is "Rodger's (spelling?) Toy Money" (not sure if this is the title on the cover, but this is the book.... Is that why there's so often a hole in middle...?

    Lost In Space

If it ever does turn up, you could tell the seller and enclose another cheque for the amount refunded.
  3. Is this topic an example of a later overstrike?

    Who Is It?

It's Caspar. He's friendly, you know...

Pah! It's not, after all, unique...

    Gothic Florin..or Not

It's the Gothic script - it makes Roman numerals harder to read!

    Spot The Lustre..

I can see 3 possible candidates: - between D and E of DEF - above Britannia's helmet plume - just below her right foot But I may be imagining all three!

    Gothic Florin..or Not

What you take to be the Gothic "i" (for 1) is in fact the Gothic "x" (for 10). The additional letter is a "v", making the date 1885. Hope that helps.

    3 Pence 1920

Yes, those pictures are much better. I can see it's an UNC 3d.

    3 Pence South Africa

Yes, that's much more like it. Good luck with selling it.

Quite so. This is 'Items for Sale', so although he hasn't (yet) contributed elsewhere, he's got the right to post here. If we don't buy, maybe he WILL try eBay next.
  12. rumpUK - i.e. what's left after Scotland departs. That doesn't make any sense. The UK is England Scotland Wales and N Ireland. If Scotland leaves, then the UK is England Wales and N Ireland. There's no 'r' about it. Though it does make you think : would the Queen have any say about it? The road tax was originally designed to build/repair roads, but it's been many a long decade since that pretence was maintained. Road Tax, like National Insurance, is 'just another tax' used by the Government of the day for whatever it sees fit. As you rightly say, the roads in England are pretty awful with the possible exception of the motorways, constantly being patched up/relaid.

    3 Pence 1920

You might want to post bigger pictures Patrick - you're only using 40k of the total 150k allowed per post. Although I can see it's a very high grade coin, I'd still prefer to see it much bigger than that.

It's a nice looking coin. We do have members interested in foreign, Empire and Commonwealth coins - I'm sure they will send you a private message if they're interested.
  15. One would like to feel, Dudley being not far from the Soho Works, that M. Boulton had at least a hand in this one. Could 'JAMES' on the reverse refer to Mr Watt, I wonder?
  16. Seen it twice on FB already, but it still makes me laugh
  17. It's probably a wearing die, or else some grease or something got onto the die. I imagine the 1967 dies got quite a fair bit of hammering, though surprisingly you don't see many 1967 'weak strikes'. It's certainly the earlier issue, not the '1968' issue which used the 1956 obverse dies.
  18. The last Scottish king of this name was Alexander III. He was the last king of the House of Dunkeld and reigned from 1249 to 1286, and was, surprise, surprise the son of Alexander II. So, Mr Salmond would become Alexander IV - sounds better than King Salmond I, with Queen Sturgeon alongside him. Is there a living Stuart claimant to a Scottish throne? They've tracked down the last of the Plantagenets, and the Young Pretender is a good 250 years later than Dickie III, so why not?
  19. It's likely to be a die identifier - they were very interested in die durability just after the changeover to bronze.
  20. I thought the same until I zoomed my screen, then I saw it was definitely an A.

Did you know that 'sulphur' is now OFFICIALLY to be spelt 'sulfur' (and has been for some time) - I don't like us adopting silly American spellings and it feels faintly Orwellian - what next, aluminum??? Loath as I am to jump to the defense of 'silly Americanisms', aluminum was apparently the traditional spelling until the early 19th Century when some scientific committee decided the "i" should be added. The Americans demurred. However, I do agree about sulfur - NO WAY!!
  22. I can't actually see the scratches (the photos are quite dark) but if I was a buyer I would be quite happy with the description "EF, slight scratches on obverse".
  23. I suppose Mel Gibson is now a historical figure - it seems ages since he made a film It has been ages since he has been mentally competent enough to complete a film. Curiously enough he doesn't live but a few hundred metres from Britney Spears and Justin Bieber. Must be something in the water.
