1851 Victoria Farthing, "d Over Sideways D"
Peckris replied to RLC35's topic in British Coin Related Discussions & Enquiries
Produced for collectors? Then how do you account for the 60/59 overdate? My view is that the 1860 issues were done very briefly to meet demand in the event of the bronze conversion running into a few delays. Though that only makes sense completely if the 1859 dies had been used up due to the anticipated changeover. -
Pop 'em up here. We'll do our best. I have some experience with Roman though far from expert.
-
The logical conclusion from that is, if you regard coin collecting as an investment and are particularly concerned to see a "big profit" on your investment, then slab when you are ready to sell and not before. If that time is decades off, and slabbing has gone out of fashion by then, you won't be making any expensive mistakes.

Why not use DropBox's Public folder? That's easy enough to use.

Elizabeth as Easter Island statue? Oops, I was looking at the wrong side. And who exactly is OUEEN ELIZABETH?
-
Yes, I did. It was an interesting experience. From the start, I would ask them if you can take just part of the cabinet (after 12 months trial) at a reduced rent if sales don't match rent which is always a possibility. I did find that Christmas was a boost. And that commemorative sets sold quite well to 'passing trade' (if you can get year set holders and coins to fill them, that's quite an asset; the coins don't have to be better than average as these are rarely bought by genuine collectors). Apart from that, be ready to be surprised at what sells and what doesn't : there's very little prediction you can do, unless you're lucky enough to have a few regular punters who collect in a particular field. Label your coins clearly, especially the price, and give each one a unique ID number in case there's any conflict at a later date. You'd be surprised how many sellers fail to read labels properly, so make sure yours are absolutely clear. Make sure they send you a monthly statement with a breakdown of every item sold, and be fastidious yourself in keeping good records. Lighting and dispaly are also important, so spend some time setting out your wares to best effect. Your best items or the most attractive ones, should be near to eye level if possible. Apart from that - good luck! It was a very up and down experience, but on the whole I'm glad I did it.

I only see a plain 20.

Mine too - the difference between the two types is more distinctive IMO than the beaded/toothed border 1860s, where the toothed border is sometimes mistaken for a beaded. You couldn't make any such mistake with the 1953. -
Mirror fields on currency coins became the norm from the mid-70s on.

No sorry if that's how it reads. The value as is now £110. My point was it should not make a difference to customer service whether the coin is worth X amount, but they have missed out on my future dealings as it could of totalled to the £1000's. No problem Lee. Just wanted to make sure as we've all seen mules listed on eBay for ludicrous four figure sums. I sat in the room at London Coins auction last Sunday and watched about ten of them pass across the block at £35-80 a time (dependent upon grade), so that's about the value right now. I do share your frustration at CGS. They really need to take their business seriously or they're just going to be sidelined. Thing is..I'm having serious doubts on the coin. I can remember certain aspects and I'm sure I took pictures. They are just disgraceful in how they treat customers and all Steven Levitt / Lovett?? is after is your cash. Nuts to the customer. Stephen Lockett. The sad thing is, he was ok as a dealer when I met him at the Midland 15 years ago or so. Personally, I would forget all about slabbing. It's a colossal waste of time and money. You have the coins - invest in a decent coin cabinet and you will save yourself ££££££££'s in the long run.

The 1864 penny in BU is arguably as rare as the 1922 penny. It's often acknowledged to be the rarest bun to find in top grade. -
see an even sillier case here - "For in the description the seller had put that this was an Ilkhan silver coin, minted in the 13th century in the Tabriz region. And Tabriz that's in the heart of darkness in American eyes: IRAN !!! So PayPal immediately blocked this evil attempt to evade trade restrictions with Iran." Yep, they're great aren't they? Big brother wades in, but at no point allows the accused to discuss any bone of contention. Auto reply by email is their modus operandi. If you have the temerity to write, it will be ignored and a mistake claimed once you have a judgement in your favour. The sad reality is that people won't walk away from eBay and Paypal because it offers an easy way of selling things. If you want to change eBay and not get some paranoid US offical worked up, there needs to be an alternative to eBay which people have to use and be seen to be using. Given the prices obtained on eBay of late, it strikes me that mass abstention would be timely, and frankly, I couldn't give a sh*t what they think other than if they try to impose their will on me, I go out of my way to stick one up theirs too. I feel tempted to open a new account and flood it with hundreds of free listings of Iranian postage stamps or similar. Anything of zero value that would tie up their beaurocracy has to be worth the return on investment. In the land of the imperialist prat, I become a revolutionary and vice-versa. Would we lose much by restricting ourselves to eBay.co.uk, who presumably have at least a modicum of natural commonsense?

Query From A Newbie!
Peckris replied to Jacamo's topic in British Coin Related Discussions & Enquiries
Regulars will be tired of my recounting this but... ...in about 1998/9 I was at the Midland Fair and one dealer had a large plastic drawer full of coins, priced 25p each or "5 for £1". When I started poking around in it, he said "It's worth having a good look in there - I bought it as a job lot and it hasn't been sorted." After a few minutes of poking around I'd found a NBU 1951 brass 3d, an EF 1888 sixpence, several pre-1920 silver shillings and florins, and a few other bits and bobs. I then went to Stephen Lockett and showed him what I'd found. Whereupon he hightailed it over there and bought the entire drawer! Probably made the other guy an offer he couldn't refuse. -

That's actually a very nice repro, especially the reverse. I'd be quite happy to have it in the absence of any decent James II silver. Not worth anything much, but nice. -
Many dealers, including Chris Perkins who runs this site and Rotographic, will pay a price for pre-47 which is pretty constant between them (bullion value minus a margin for profit). Why not contact Chris as I'm sure he'd appreciate first refusal?
-
He must have used them as unofficial titles then, and Octavian decided to make them official when he became the Emperor Augustus.
-
You'd actually be better off getting Chris's "Check Your Change" as CCGB only covers predecimal coins and you sound more interested in decimals.

Help Grading This 1690 Halfcrown?
Peckris replied to CromwellCrown's topic in British Coin Related Discussions & Enquiries
Well, I can only see the obverse but I would rate it VF at least. (The wreath leaves have some wear but there's very little anywhere else.) Perhaps GVF. -
It's unlikely but not absolutely impossible. However I've never seen one in change. It would be a better move to get the two sets I think. The 1972 set is particularly desirable as only the 25p was ever issued outside the proof sets, so it's your only chance of getting a set of coins dated 1972. The 1982 BU set is much cheaper to buy so perhaps that's the place to start? The coins in BU sets are struck to a very high standard, though they aren't proofs. Oh, and Welcome to the forums , by the way

I can just make out the ghost of '183' under the portrait, but Sod's Law says the final digit is unreadable.
