What does NGC's 58 equate to?

That looks (probably - it's very worn) a third bust London Mint issue. That would need to be at least Fine or near it to have any value. However, there are a couple of interesting features on yours : the first L of GVLIELMVS has a dot within it and may have been struck over another letter. Also, where there should simply be a dot after GVLIELMVS there seems to be some kind of misstrike connecting the S to the dot. Whether this is enough to constitute excitement among varieties collectors is moot - there are many many errors in this series and they have to be a very clear and discernible punching error to warrant attention.

I don't use Windows, but very many people who do use the free image software Picasa. I imagine that Picasa opens most image type files? And downloading it won't b*gger up your system. That makes complete sense. With dies already in preparation for 1894 issues, why would they go to the expense and trouble of recutting an 1892 punch just to press a few pennies?

Hi Alan, Welcome to the forums Your shilling is a 1696 issue, but which one depends on the bust, and what - if any - is the letter below the bust. For that reason we would need to see the obverse ("heads") side. Do you have a picture? There are one or two rare varieties but we would need to see the other side. As for condition, it's not quite Fair which is the very minimum condition to be collected, and then only for scarce or rare dates and varieties. Usually, a coin needs to be the next grade up from Fair - Fine - to have any value listed. Your coin - assuming it's not a rare variety - is really not much more than bullion value, but worth keeping for its historic value.

.rar is a file type rather like a .zip archive - it holds compressed versions of files which then have to be uncompressed. If you're using Windows, I thought that .rar files were recognised? On my Mac I long ago downloaded a free utility (UnrarX) which uncompresses them. Maybe there is a Windows version too? Would there be any chance of having these various file extensions on a sticky (in useful references) that people can add to together with a solution to opening the files? Someone sent me an image with a psd(?) extension a while back, but neither I nor the windows program on my computer recognised it, so the image had to be binned. It wasn't the first unopenable file received as Baldwins also format their files in some unintelligible way. Obviously the problem is proprietary software, but nobody is going to buy every available program just to view an image which may not appear. Something along the lines of Adobe reader which allows you to read only would be useful.Common file extensions: .doc or .docx - Microsoft Word, but will open in other programs too .pdf - generic pdf which will open in Adobe Reader & other programs .jpg - generic jpeg image file .png .tif .gif .bmp - other image files .psd - Photoshop or Elements file .zip - compressed files in an archive .rar - similar, but needs special program to open and may carry a password .txt - basic text file .rtf - rich text file (like .txt but with retained formatting) .mov - Quicktime movie .avi - video file .mp3 - music MP3 .aac .m4a .aif .wav - other audio types, some compressed, some not .xls - Excel spreadsheet .ppt - Powerpoint file That's most of the commoner types, I think.

That's a good reproduction Kris - is that on the Epson V500, or V600? That's scanned on the Epson Perfection 4870 Photo that must be getting on for 6 or 7 years old. Probably the equivalent of the V500 or V600 today. The latest ones use LED lamps and mine's plasma so there's no longer a direct equivalent. Ah right - thanks. It's much better than the 'noise' you get on digital sensors. Others must agree as Photoshop has an 'add film grain' filter!)

You did ok - a Fine 1860 penny for less than £3 including postage is fair enough I'd say. You certainly weren't burned, pissed or not!!

There's a big difference between celebrating and commemorating. Commemoration means to remember and show respect for, which seems ok to me. I think he's referring to the use of that Kitchener recruiting poster? Absolutely appalling and shoddy poor taste and lack of respect.

I find a great limitation with the 2400 dpi of the external shop - they look fine, but just try and bring any shadow detail out and all you get is gaudy luminescent streaks of nothing Having said that, I've seen an Epson photo scanner online for just under £200 that's 6400 dpi resolution which is getting on for three times as much res.

What are you using? I've had some of mine done by an external shop, but they come back at 2400 dpi resolution - they're ok, but you couldn't say any better than that. I'd like to do my own, and get perfect high-res copies.

Ah, the great days of Communist cameras! I began with a Russian made Zorki 4 (virtual exact reproduction of a prewar Leica IIIb) for which I got 3 lenses - I still have the camera and standard lens and I bet it works if I got a film for it. I also briefly used a Lubitel (TLR) but it was a hassle getting 120 roll film processed; I did my own D&P of black and white 35mm film back then. And a Leningrad light meter (the Zorki and Lubitel had nothing electronic anywhere in them, not even a light meter) which was pretty good. Now I slum it with a Lumix superzoom FZ camera. Ok, it has a tiny tiny sensor (makes 110 film look like medium format ) but as long as I am aware of its limitations it takes some good pictures...
