I always go through the change I get and have built up my collection through that. Today I picked up the England 2002 Commonwealth £2 coin and it's in remarkably good condition for 8 years circulation under it's belt!

Just thought I'd share this with you! At work today somebody handed me this note and my heart did that little skip thing when I noticed the serial number! BD74 000006! Shall I start planning my early retirement now?

2008 Britannia 50p not so scarce as thought
MikeCoin replied to chris's topic in British Coin Related Discussions & Enquiries
Maybe they added additional mintage figures for things like coin sets or whathaveyou? Not sure personally. All I do know however is that the 50p Brittania is ruddy difficult to find, even if the mintage is 3,500,000! =p -
Rarest Circulation Coin?

I think the only 'coin' that Rod Stewart owns that he won't be giving away any time soon is a Penny... as in Penny Lancaster-Stewart =p -

Rarest Circulation Coin?
MikeCoin replied to PatrickCoin's topic in British Coin Related Discussions & Enquiries
I agree, they're pretty hard to find. Mind you, I've got about 5 or 6 of the 1988 pound coin. Ooh, what about that 1908 Olympic Games 2008 £2 coin. Only 910,000 minted of them and I've only ever seen one... [img[http://www.royalmint.com/web/MultimediaFiles/2008TWOPOUNDSLG.JPG I've never, ever seen this one though which is a 2008 issue again: -

Would say that it's pretty rare I should have said, but can't edit. =/ -
Rarest Circulation Coin?

I would say that the 2008 Brittania 50p with just 700,000 minted. They are out there in circulation as I currently have 3 examples. -
Big Bag of 1920's Silverware Coins (Plus a few earlier)
MikeCoin posted a topic in British Coin Related Discussions & Enquiries
Today I stumbled across a guy selling a big pile of coins at the local market and fished my way through them to dig out anything interesting. I knew that the early coins were silver and knew it was 1920 something so got all I could up to 1929. Then I find out it was 1920 they brought it down from .925 to .500. Still, I think there are some interesting ones in there. I have the Collectors Coins GB 2009 book but wanted to see if there are any particular varieties I should be looking out for with these: One Shilling Pre 1920 dates: 190? (worn), 1904, 1914, 1915, 1916, 1918. 1920 x 5 1921 x 4 1922 x 10 1923 x 5 1924 x 4 1925 x 3 1926 x 3 1927 x 3 ( 2 x old design, 1 x new design) 1928 x 6 1929 x 8 Florin 1921 x 3 1922 x 2 1923 x 1 1929 x 3 Half Crown 1920 x 2 1921 x 5 1922 x 5 1923 x 4 1928 x 6 1929 x 5 The 1904 shilling seems to value high in the book, and the one I have I'd say has some wear but still has quite a bit of detail on it. Anything in particular I should look out for in this? I certainly think it was worth a £5 investment anyways! =) -

Here's a quick photo of the front and back of the 1904 shilling. The heads side is blurry thanks to the angle I took the photo. -
2008 UK Coin Set with the Old Design
MikeCoin posted a topic in British Coin Related Discussions & Enquiries
Has anybody else come across these? I got my first one about 7 months ago when a 2008 old style coat of arms pound coin appeared in my money tin (I'm self employed). Since then I wondered if the complete set was out there and have spent pretty much all of this year trying to find them all. Last week I *finally* managed to get my hands on the last one, the 50p. Here's a couple of photos (I apologise if these are a little oversized - trying to keep the details clear): In my experience in trying to find these (this has sometimes amounted to searching bags upon bags of coins, mostly to no avail) this is a rough estimate to rarity: 1p - semi rare. 2p - extremely rare. 5p - not very rare. 10p - pretty rare. 20p - not very rare. 50p - extremely rare. £1 - semi rare. Just gone onto wikipedia and found some of the percentages between old / new amounts pressed. 20p - 11,900,000 / 81,920,000 (13.5% features old design) 50p - 700,000 / 12,320,000 (5% features old design) £1 - 3,910,000 / 29,433,000 (13.2% features old design) Does anybody have any more information surrounding these coins? I'm sure I heard somewhere that minting for the new design started in March meaning only a few weeks of old design production before the new one was implimented. Can't remember where I heard that from though. Is it possible that this set could be worth anything in the future, or even now? A friend of mine claims that they've found the final one I need to complete a second set so I'm thinking of trying my chances on eBay if only to see what'll happen. Thanks in advance for listening to my rambling. Please go easy on me if I've come up with something discussed a million times before - it's just enthusiasm I guess! =p -
2008 UK Coin Set with the Old Design
MikeCoin replied to MikeCoin's topic in British Coin Related Discussions & Enquiries
'Lo and behold I glanced into a work collegues change pot to find a 2008 50p and when turning it over expecting the shield I was greeted to Britannia! They're out there, albeit very difficult to find! -
I strongly suspect it is but thought I'd get the second opinion from y'all. Just found this coin beside me when I was sat in my armchair. There's a stroke of luck for you. Can I finally afford that Jag I've always wanted? =p

Double Struck 10p Piece?
MikeCoin replied to MikeCoin's topic in British Coin Related Discussions & Enquiries
Interestingly I've found a couple more... another 1992 and two from 2001. Perhaps there's something more here than what meets the eye... I'll get piccies of them tomorrow. -
I'm in the habit of checking the serial numbers on my banknotes now and currently these four have ended up in my change. Was just wondering if they're worth keeping hold of for any future value, or worth just keeping in the collection as a future investment. TL: JA13 534844. With rubbing serial numbers. TR: HA39 481103. Special first run with a slightly rubbed serial number. BL: AE70 386210. Early note with 'The Company' print. BR: AB63 501859. As above. BL and TR are in better condition and just have some creases. BR and TL are a little more worn. Thanks in advance! =)

Interestingly none of the lettering looks double-struck but the spots around the edge do. -
2009 coins in change
MikeCoin replied to hertfordian's topic in British Coin Related Discussions & Enquiries
The 2008 Brittania 50p's are out there. They only ever produced 700,000 according to the Mint website and I've only ever come across one which I have in my collection. The 2p's are also a complete sod to find. I've just got two of them. I have a number of all the others. -
Has anybody spotted this one before? I've included the tails side in case there's something on that which I've missed.

2009 Penny Anomaly
MikeCoin replied to MikeCoin's topic in British Coin Related Discussions & Enquiries
That design would be perfect with the text "All Hail the Almighty Queen!" written around the edge. =p I've got a number of 2008 20p which have extra metal blobs. One I have has a missing spot on the Tails side down that line. -
2009 Penny Anomaly
MikeCoin replied to MikeCoin's topic in British Coin Related Discussions & Enquiries
I'm guessing I can't quite retire early just yet then. =p Is it just me or are these new design coins being made a little more sloppily? The 20p especially! I've got a few of them where there're excess metal spots all around the design. -
Picked this up over the weekend as a curiousity more than anything. I can find a little out about this but not much, especially value. If anybody can shed any light on about this it'd be greatly appreciated.

Coin delivery ~ Royal Mail problems
MikeCoin replied to 1949threepence's topic in British Coin Related Discussions & Enquiries
God, the number of times that's happened to me. I've spent all day in waiting for the postie to arrive and then the letterbox flaps. I get there just in time to see a 'You weren't in' slip and the van pulling away. Grrr! Back when I was selling a few vinyl records on eBay I sent one out to Germany where the postie out there saw fit to take the package and fold it tight in half in order to get it through their letterbox... Thank GOD it wasn't rare! -
Coin delivery ~ Royal Mail problems

It can only be left if it has been signed for. The signature is a legal contract showing that you have received it and that it is in your hands. The fact that he's signing on your behalf and then just leaving it in full view of anyone to take is grossly unprofessional. What if someone sees it and takes it unbeknownst to you? Officially the parcel was delivered and there's nothing anybody can do. I agree with the above suggestions, sounds like something to speak about next time you're at the sorting office. -
At the local carboot today I picked up the 1985 and 1986 BU coin sets and when I looked through a couple of the inserts of the '86 set when I got them home I found these three £1 notes. Two of the notes have sequential serial numbers and the third is 5 off. They're also in a beautiful condition as you can see in the photos. Do they have any real value?
