  1. Off hand, without books Jersey Guernsey Isle of Man Gibraltar Falklands Ascension & St.Helena Try searching on eBay, there are some dealers that specialise in them
  2. 4! The squiggles between the front legs are an eagle if you look closely
  3. A scarce little medieval copper came in today's post Ferdinand I of Aragon as King of Naples, Bronze cavallo, 1472 - 1488 obverse FERRANDVS REX radiate, draped, and cuirassed bust rightreverse EQVITAS RE G NI, horse prancing right, rosette above, T flanked by a rossete on each side in exergue; eagle mintmark for Aquila
  4. This has a suggestion of a doubled 4 and a broken 7, sadly horrid grade
  5. Happy Birthdays each!
  6. I also like these beautiful in high grade, sadly awful when circulated, the relief was far too low
  7. One of my favourite designs, must look out for a better grade one Italy 10 centesimi (1919-1938), the use of the bee on the flower is a good use of the space, and it was one of the first regular coin issues not to use national symbols or mythological characters
  8. My grandchildren will have to sort my collection out one day! Hopefully mine is reasonably documented
  9. I've finally got round to transfering hundreds of coins that were in 2x2 envelopes to mylar coin holders, mainly so my grandchildren can actually see and handle them without damage. I bought a trial pack of Hartberger pages (24.5 x 28.5 cm) from our host which seem ideal, and I'm now looking at binders & slip cases, what do folks here use recommend? David
  10. Happy Birthdays!
  11. That would be great! And please PM me your name for the acknowledgements I hadn't realised how difficult it is to image these tiny shiny coins, I collect mostly 30mm copper. Every little speck of dust turns into a boulder the original scans for this image are all at 1200 dpi, what resolution would you like? David
  12. Yes, we learned base 12 and base 20 for Lsd, base 16, 14 & 20 for weights, etc though they were never called that, I had never heard of binary or hexadecimal till many years later How many folk here remember exercise books with all the Imperial measurements on the back cover? there's one illustrated here David (in old fogey mode)
  13. The 1882 Jamaica penny is the same, the catalogues list a no H variety, but I've never seen a convincing one, given the total mintage recorded was just 48,000, I doubt the RM would bother, unless they were testing their newly installed equipment on cupronickel as well as bronze blanks. a clogged die is the most likely explanation. David
  14. I have 2004, complete set given to my mum by HRH at Liverpool Cathedral, if you need them
  15. I spent the morning watching coverage of the ceremony to honour the three French police officers, killed in the awful events last week Then the postman brought this, I assume a discount token for 10 centimes, early 20th C, brass 30mm Paris in happier times David Edit: Kermesse is the Paris Fun Fare, so probably a slot machine token
  16. Eyeline different but R touches E of REG - Obverse B ?? EDIT changed my thoughts, it's essential to compare coins of similar grade, such as my F6 on the left below looks the same to me
  17. is there an online list?
  18. ditto
  19. Happy New Year folks!
  20. excellant for books, never bought a coin I don't think
  21. I found this on another forum How do you rate as a potential Ebay seller? 1. A coin you are listing has bronze disease. You would describe this in your listing as… (a) lovely green patina ( requires mild cleaning/wouldn’t mention it © I would never sell such a coin. 2. The best way to describe those Kushan slugs you’d dipped in toilet-cleaning acid last week is… (a) It’s amazing how, even after more than 2000 years, you can still see the original mint luster on these coins. ( The coins have been cleaned mildly to remove tough grime. © I would never sell such coins 3. A coin you have been unable to attribute is best described as… (a) {Type emperor}, {Type mint) EXTREMELY RARE. UNLISTED!!!! DON’T MISS IT!!!!!!! ( Rare ancient coin © Unattributed 4. The best way to pack a high-grade coin before shipping it to the buyer is to (a) tape it to an old newspaper page, fold it up, and stuff the damn thing inside the envelope. ( use cheap packaging, but at least place the coin in a small plastic pouch. © use top-quality packaging and place the coin in an acid-free holder. 5. The best way to find new/rare varieties for your shop is to (a) get a sharp knife (wink, wink) ( get coins with partial mint names and write “creative” descriptions © travel extensively and build contacts 6. Using “stock” images in auction listings is (a) Essential ( Acceptable © Unacceptable 7. An underweight coin is (a) AN EXTREMELY RARE *UNRECORDED* variety ( I never mention weights in my listings. © Most likely to be a fake 8. Catalog values are (a) sometimes useful for jacking up the price ( for nerds © mostly indicative and do not necessarily reflect market values 9. Would you knowingly sell a fake coin? (a) Absolutely! ( “I do not know what this is. No returns accepted.” © Never 10. What is your opinion on shill bidding? (a) I prefer the term “encouragement”. It helps weed out weak buyers. ( They can track it, can’t they? © It is a disgusting practice. I would never engage in it. SCORING For every (a), give yourself 10 POINTS For every ( , give yourself 5 POINTS For every ©, give yourself 0 POINTS RESULT 90-100 points: Congratulations! You are on your way to 5-star powerselling glory! 50-90 points: You are getting there. Keep it up! 5-45 points: Don't get your hopes too high… 0 points: We thank thee for taking this quiz, dear Jesus. edit - don't you hate it when when perfectly good text gets converted to emoticons David
  22. There are some superb patterns in this series
  23. Hope everything goes all right for you Dave. My wife was in hospital Xmas Day two years ago, the only gluten free meal they could find for her Xmas Dinner was shepherds pie! So I had to do a rolling food parcel run A very Merry Xmas to all, and a Happy New Year - lots of lovely coins to find David
  24. It's a common misconception that bagpipes are primarilly Scots, bagpipes have been played for centuries (and continue to be played) throughout large parts of Europe, Turkey, the Caucasus, around the Persian Gulf and in Northern Africa I spotted this guy in Tirana a few years back
