I haven’t got Courts article to hand at present, but from memory I think we are talking millions for the 1916 RE, must be more than one working die, very puzzling.

A picture’s worth a thousand words

So does anyone have a 1915 RE without a chipped tooth?

Why has the Queen's portrait on banknotes not been aged?
davidrj replied to 1949threepence's topic in Free for all
And Machins portrait of HM on the definitive stamps dates from 1967. According to Wikipedia the Queen herself has rejected changes - there are now over 1000 varieties to collect! -
I know Victoria had lots of kids, But .........

Nothing new, look at Victoria’ s stamps 1887-1900 -
Here's another, a bit more dramatic

Seems quite common for a variety of years and reverse dies, always in the same place which suggests a rare bur regular glitch in the minting machinery. some I've found -

davidrj replied to terrysoldpennies's topic in British Coin Related Discussions & Enquiries
Nice, much harder to find than F176 despite the Court figures. Mine is still the one I pulled from circulation many years ago, still looking for an upgrade -
My head hurts - makes bun pennies look simple Looks like the makings of a “Freeman” for decimals

1900 Penny .. dot after O in One
davidrj replied to Colin88's topic in Confirmed unlisted Varieties.
To be fair, he thought at the time that it was possibly a die identification mark, only later did evidence of die cracks come to light. All such dots on British coins are probably due to grit. However if you delve into French numismatics, you will find very similar dots which are highly significant. -
1897 one penny dot's between e and n of penny
davidrj replied to frankiew's topic in Confirmed unlisted Varieties.
This is the 1875 with a dot under the 1st I of VICTORIA, with coincident die crack on the reverse. Very scarce, London coins have sold 2 I think. -
Grrrr! Photobucket stinks. I have used them for about 9 years to post images on this site and various other fora. All my posts are now worthless sans pictures When I sign on I find i can retrieve about 50% of my images, the rest although I see a thumbnail, all I get is their banner telling me I must pay for the service. Very frustrating as I no longer have the originals
-
Nice low starting price on this one - £58,000
-
Comparing photos for varieties is difficult, and damn near impossible if the direction of illumination is significantly different as in your two David

Require Historians' Help re a Victorian Period
davidrj replied to Coinery's topic in Nothing whatsoever to do with coins area!
The young lady’s family probably spent a considerable amount for her portrait, today she would take a selfie on her phone and post in on Facebook. -
